So... we rebodied a Slash? I wonder if this is going to be a bashing platform or if we will actually create a new racing class with the HPI one and the other knockoffs that ensue.

Fine with the chassis - works ok, plenty adjustable...LOW CG version looks pretty good...but the body...ouch. Style fail there.

huh, i guess the traxxas designer's and engineer's went back to school and got an 8th grade education in physics. it appears they now understand the concept and benefit of a low center of gravity. im truly amazed by this.
not a car id buy or even accept as a gift, but it does appear that they at least partially pulled there heads out of where the sun don't shine on this one.
but i still can't help but feel that do to the design and amount of plastic used it's somewhat outdated already. and possibly a pain in the butt to work on.
i have a serious interest in RC rally, but i feel that everyone that's attempted one recently has dropped the ball. this is no exception.

what are the dimensions on it? is it actually a true 1/10 scale? would a 200mm body fit this thing? or did they get stupid with the size like HPI did?

and traxxas should be ashamed of themselves for that body. easily one of the top 10 ugliest body's in RC history.

I like the layout of the chassis and how the bottom of the chassis is all smooth. I might be interested in it, but not right when it comes out.

I agree about the body. It is ugly! Looks like a Traxxas 1/16 body just stretched.

Overall, I think it's a great idea by Traxxas.

I finally saw the chassis without the body. It looks pretty slick actually... The body though... Really? lol. I'm not sure what's going on there. Maybe they decided to go with 1980's Nitro Hawk vacuum mold building techniques. It might be a retro thing. Nothing is more retro than using the actual technology from back in the day.

Here's what I will never understand about Traxxas: they have their own size for every car they make. This is not competitive in the 1/10 scale (tamiya) or the 1/9 scale (kyosho) sizes at all. It's got SC truck rims/tire sizes, bigger than all the rest by FAR, and it's 1.5 inches wider than my DRX... which actually looks like a Rally car.

This Traxxas Rally will take a beating, has easy parts replacements, upgrades available everywhere, and it will sell a ton. Really too bad it can't race with anyone else in the rally segment. Or we can't race with it.

Well aside from the SC tires, it fits right in with the GT8 class. Throw on some 17mm adapters and your good to go. I feel that Kyosho and HPI should have made their cars this size, 1/8th scale is a lot more established.

i think traxxas intentionally designs there vehicles to be non compliant or makes vehicles that have no specific class cause they know if they try to compete on an equal plane they'll get there butts kicked.

reason i think that:
they've done that summit, the funny car, a boat, the X0-1, and re-badged the same 1/16 scale chassis a million times. all vehicles that nobody asked for, and aside from the boat and the funny car have no specific classes. and neither one of those vehicles is capable of holding it's own against the existing competition (and i think the funny car is even a weird size and therefore has no class to compete in) but sense both of those segments are such a small niche market nobody knows any better.
yet i constantly hear people say they want traxxas to do an 1/8 buggy and/or truggy. iv been hearing that sense at least 2005. 1/8 buggys are a well established class and a pretty big market. bashers love them, racers love them. traxxas hasn't done it. they won't hesitate to be first in line, or wad around in the shallow end when nobody's around, but they won't jump into a crowded pool.

they no longer have that "the team to watch" mentality. sucks to cause i remember the SRT being a pretty solid and capable truck back in the day. so i know they have the ability.

I think you guys need to remember that Traxxas doesn't always design a car to compete in a class with others. Instead they want to design a car that looks cool to the implulse / 1st time buyer and can take a beating.

90% of all Traxxas cars sold never even see the track on race day.

I agree...and look at Traxxas...they started the SC revolution. I'm no Traxxas fanboy. But I do respect there vision to keep creating new products.

If any of you noticed, Proline has already released a Ford Fiesta body that fits this vehicle. Your scale looks are solved.

I wouldn't be surprised if this car stats a Rally cross race series specific to this vehicle. Time will tell.

That ain't 1/10! LOL, how did they come up with that size? Not only that is wrong, that body is also wrong. Hideous. People really like those unscaled New Bright looking vehicles?

The chassis looks cool though! The right body, paint, and wheels would fix it. Unfortunately Traxxas always attracts the worst fans in this hobby and other companies will also dumb down to their levels. Of course meaning that many r/c's have no style or character.

Actually a study done about 10 years ago or so showed that the number is approximately 95% and that pertains to ALL rc vehicles, race vehicles and bashers, that never see a track. That number may be a bit different today as more vehicles are battery powered and has brought more paople into the scene, but I doubt it has changed much.

Do you know if the things like the Radio Shack and supermarket RC toys were included in the survey? That would really skew the results toward a higher number since it is not really feasible to take those kinds of RC car to a reca or a track.

Ehhh, that sounds about right for 2002... but the hobby has changed a lot since then. I bet it's a lower percentage on the track due to the monster truck revolution and even crawlers and minis/micros being sold as christmas/birthday presents.

I'd expect a lot higher bash:race ratio than 10 years ago.

i bet the numbers are still about the same just because of the short course boom. the tracks quickly filled up, and were packed even for a weekly weekday club race. and are still drawing big turn outs and new faces.
i remember walking into west coast raceway on a thursday night for a test and tune about 3 or so years ago. standing room only! the drivers stand was so packed there were people standing on the steps of the stand to drive. i kid you not, quite frequently there were 30+ trucks on the track at a time. im not sure if it's still like that, i quit going, to crowded, i don't want some hack noob wrecking my truck.
there are also more tracks open now than there ever have been to fill the need.

if you count competition crawling that's no different than racing a buggy.
10+ years ago people were racing monster trucks, now that scene has pretty much died off. but there are still places that race them.

overall units sold VS what gets races/used in competition, i bet the percentage is about the same as it was in 2002.

I do agree that the SC boom brought more people to the track, but we may have got something like 4-5 new racers out of the Slash boom, and we sold probably a couple hundred during the first year of having them in stock.

I think more people are buying r/c stuff now than they were "back in the day," but about the same number of people who actually race are showing up at tracks. More is being sold, and the same showing up at tracks. At least around here. To me, that means there's a lower percentage at the track than there used to be.

must be a regional thing then. cause out here there are more tracks than there have ever been. and each track individually gets a higher headcount than the one track used to get. that's more people showing up at more race tracks.

strange thing is, what i haven't seen in a long time is somebody bashing. i don't even see tire marks at the bash spots anymore. idk if the bash spots have changed or what.

Around here, it seems to be mostly running in front of the house or finding an open parking lot on a saturday or something. I guess I've always thought of my area being representative of some average of the world lol. If some regions have grown new tracks, it would make sense that the percentage is about the same!

I wonder if the extra tracks come from people getting laid off who can't drag race/road race/circle track race real cars, so they buy an r/c car to save a few bucks and get a similar thrill. I know it happens around here during the winter when nobody races big cars, just so there's something to go compete with.

haven't really paid enough attention to that to really know. interesting thought.

iv made a few observations in the 1:1 world.
idk about the oval, road course and off road guys, but i have noticed that a lot of the drag racers or there kids have RC cars.
iv also noticed that the younger guys (16 - 24) who have an interest in building and racing a full size car but can't afford it so they mess with there street cars have RC cars. (im a little older than that, but that's the boat im in).
iv also noticed that some of the older guys (pushing 40) who have nice show cars they cruise around with have RC cars. almost as if the big cars done and they need something to tinker with.

im going to have to start watching who and what shows up at the RC tracks now.

We have a group of 4 that run one of the local import shops. He's where I buy all my Miata parts from (for the most part anyway). They get done drag racing and going to track days and pull out their r/c stuff and go to the indoor track. I find myself in the same boat.
