Okay, I don`t know quite how specific you can get with buying transmitters, but I am looking around and it seems either way I go, I will need to buy extra parts. Just in case though, does anybody have any recommendations for me? Here is what I figure I`ll need:

1 channel for servo (rudder control)
1 channel for ESC (forward thrust control)
1 channel for forward reverse ESC (up/down thrust control)
1 channel for toggle (spotlight on/off)

Any recommendations???

Thanks

Another quickie question...

There is a transmitter on the Hobby People website that has four channels... yet boasts an 8 channel receiver... what is this for? Can you hook up two transmitters to it? How would the receiver know which channel is which?

Thanks again guys.

Hi Guitty,

Sounds like you need at least a four channel radio. Your ESC would hook into the throttle position on the receiver, but I'm not sure what your describing with the forward/reverse ESC. Do you need an additional ESC to provide forward and reverse operation of a motor? Or is this another servo position?

A 5 channel radio would give you the benefit of having a toggle switch to operate the lights. Many systems use a receiver that has more channels than the transmitters. This lets them use the same receiver with many different style transmitters. It does not allow the use of 2 transmitters, just makes the receiver capable of growing with your needs and of course makes it easier on the manufacturer.

Most all of the radio systems can be ordered with the micro receiver and servos, so if you find a system you like don't be discouraged if it has larger servos, check with the store and I'm sure you can have it ordered with micro gear. The price will be higher. JR, Hitek, Futaba, Airtronics all seem to make good gear. I noticed that you are not far from St. Charles. Mark Twain Hobby has a good supply of JR and Futaba gear. Their prices are comparable to mail order and they will mix and match the way you like. They also have a large supply of ESC's to choose from.

Wow, thanks for the help. The thrust ESC would be to thrust the blimp forward. The forward/reverse ESC would be to move the blimp up and down, vertically.

This may make things a little more obvious.

Thanks again for the help CalmAir, you're a star.

Hi Guitty,

Very interesting. How much overall weight will it be able to lift? The ESC you will need for the up and down thrust will need reverse and weigh more than an aircraft forward only unit.

I have figured the overall lift from it will be approximately 2lbs (figuring in weight of envelopes). I am hoping to get the RC and motor equipment under 1lb, to leave as much as possible for an add-on (small spotlight at first, a wireless camera when I get the money together, a la Tony Avak).
