Yes, with the warm weather now here, it's time to break out the air brush and do some painting. I have to look through my pile of decals and see what I have, and then start to work on some color scheme (which is the hard part). Sometime's it comes easy, and sometimes it takes a while. I should have a few painted within the next few weeks.

Hello from sunny Bulgaria!
I want to share with you few photos and ask some questions if you dont mind ofc :)
Before few months I received my super's body 2nd hand like this: Picture 1
I do my best(first time painting) and the end result was this: Picture 2
There you can see my 2 supers side by side. Actually they are electros, but that doesnt matter :)
I want to ask you from where to buy foam tires like these on C0NTENDER's pictures? Do I need some kind of converter to use them on my standart 12mm hex? Curently I use standart slick tires 27R and I dont have much grip at all. I need them for fun only. In my country we dont have class for this supers to race :(
Best regards,
St.Ganchev

Somenew, but not so new in terms of the design. I just had some decals to use so I copied a theme I did on a different car.

mods done:
electric conversion
all aluminum parts
full bearing steering mod
5 pc bearing front knuckle mod to accommodate wider wheels and more power(each side)
oneway diff at rear wheels
locked diff at front(meaning at full throttle car has all wheel drive, brakes with front wheels and reverses with front wheels)
front sway bar mod
steering servo displaced so the battery can be fitted below the front belt
front belt dislocated to accommodate battery
nothing and i mean nothing was cut all parts a bolted on and car be converted back to its nitro form.
car is balanced to a perfection and drives insane.this cars handling, control and acceleration can not compare to stock rs4 super nitro.

Wow! That's a really NICE looking Super! Great work on the mods. Out of curiosity, how does it run?? I'm still a newbie with the HPI Supers, so I'm still interested in finding out as much as I can. What kind of motor are you running? Have you thought about going with LiPo power?? I wonder how quick a Super would be with a brushless/lipo setup? :D
How much $$$$ for the kit? I know you're going to put together a list of all the parts needed. Right?? :D
Hmmmm.... Carbon Fiber frame + Brushless + LiPo......
Great job! Thanks for sharing!!
I want one too!!!!!

car is running on lipo batts and brushless motor.setup is 3s lipo,4000kv motor,120amp ESC.
it has so much power and so much control, because its heavy it has lots of grip, cornering is flawless.center of gravity is much lower than on super and because the battery is in the middle and low it doesnt over or under steer.it flys over pebbles,it goesnt jump around like super.i balanced the weight distribution as mush as i could.ESC is on the bumper, steering servo and motor are in the same line one next to another, receiver is at the back of the car.it takes a bit of time to get used to a front wheel braking, if u brake to hard it understeers.i had a front oneway and hated rear braking,it spins to easy.
im beating the crap out of this thing and still can get enough of it.
theres a pic of my bashing body with some onroad buggy tires.
i honestly dont know how much i spent but it has to be at least 1500.i would pay much less if i was using ebay and knew what i needed.
i can probably make a list of parts but it might take me some time.

C0NTENDER
10-11-2010, 06:28 PM
The blue fuel filter comes with the holder and from the looks of it, it looks like the ofna filter. To be honest, they don't add much value to the SN other than looks or adding just a little bit more fuel. The racer fuel tank has a filter in it that performs the same task. As for the holder, I'm not sure if you can get one as a stand alone.

From an Ebay post.....
I don't know the person, but here's there work...... I'd love to see it run (so maybe I'll have to build one. lol) :D
HPI SUPER NITRO RALLY that has been CONVERTED TO BRUSHLESS ELECTRIC.
This car is designated 'SUPER' sized because it is 1:9 scale which means it is larger than the regular 1:10 scale cars (see last pic which is for comparison only)
It has been set up to run on 3S Lipos but can also be run on 2S Lipos or 7.2V nimhs. This car was built last winter as a back up to my other brushless super rally, but it has never been run, however, i have to sell it to fund another project. The body is in great condition, it is an HPI made Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI. These are also very rare and just about impossible to find.
As you can see, all the parts on this car with the exception of the main aluminum chassis and the steering servo are new :
It is powered by a Traxxas Velineon VXL 3S system which is brand new. Both the ESC and motor has cooling heatsink fans and the pinion gear is a hardened 11T from Robinson Racing
The differentials are brand new complete diffs from the RS4 3 EVO+ (these are hardened gears with a higher ratio than the stock SNR gears) required for the high torque of the VXL system
The Center Spur assembly is a new slipper assembly from the HPI Nitro MT
The GPM Aluminum upper deck provides the required rigidity to reduce any flexing
The suspension arms, shock towers, body mount parts are all new. So are the shocks, hubs, wheels and rally tires.
You will need to provide your own radio system and batteries and charger.
I mounted the blue tupperware as a sort of homemade tub to keep out road debris (small pebbles and twigs etc). It also doubles as a battery bay as you can see in one of the pics. simply use a velcro strap to secure the battery to the upper deck and your Parking Lot Predator is ready...!

It's been an eternity since I've been able to work on the Super, and I'm ashamed to say that after all this time I have still never run the thing. Hopefully that will change in the coming months.
Until then, I've designed a lighter and stronger chassis for the car. It'll be made of 1/8" (3.18mm) 7075 aluminum, and thanks to extensive material removal it's going to come in a few grams lighter than the stock unit. I'm at home in Atlanta for Christmas break, but once I get back to school (early January) I plan on waterjetting this chassis for myself.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/magnus213/Red.png
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/magnus213/Chassis_Comparison.png
That's the new design laid over the stock chassis. I'm not 100% confident on hole placement because the CAD model is coming from a trace I did of the stock chassis long ago, and I don't know that I trust my old self. I plan on using acrylic to lasercut a plastic mockup before cutting any metal to save time and material.
If it works out well, I'd be happy to produce some more pieces if there are any interested Super Nitro owners. Let me know.

I see. Well, I just chose that red for the render because I thought it looked pretty cool. I need to talk to some local shops and get some quotes for anodizing pieces, as well as find out what colors they can do.
It's likely that I'm going to produce all of the parts I eventually make in the same color because I expect it to cost less than a different color for each chassis. However, this depends on how many I sell and what the shops say. I'll keep you guys posted.
In terms of .21 motor mounts, I'm not too familiar with what those entail. Do optional .21 mounts fit in the same motor mount holes that are used on the stock chassis for small block motors? If so, this chassis would work fine, but you would need to find the mounts.
If .21 mounts use a different bolt configuration, I can investigate that as well and develop a second version pretty easily.
PS- Merry Christmas everyone!

I really feel your pain....the Super Nitro HPI are the best IMO looking and running car of there era and us old school guys took these car for granted back in the day when you could walk into your LHS and pick one up...wheels, bodies, parts, anything for the Super Nitro. The SNRS4 car really should be re-released and we all could stop trying to locate every last part, car, body on the earth.....parts are still available you just need to continue looking daily for the certain part you need.
The bodies are a different story and I tried to grab as many from Contender (He by far has produced, painted, collected ) the best examples I've been able to find.
If you need just one body, I'm sure we could locate you something to complete your SNRS4.

That makes since Mine721.....having the extra parts for either car really helps if you want to run these cars trouble free and have replacement parts incase of a broken part or crash.
I sometimes feel guilty about the abundance of SNRS4 cars and spare parts I've collected over the years but rest assure the cars are driven every year and beat on hard....also willing to help anyone with a hard to find part from time to time if need be so we can keep the on-road HPI SNRS4 alive. :winner: Even if the car has been discontinued.:(

Hey everybody, been a while since this thread has been posted in! I finally had a chance yesterday to mockup my new chassis design. My buddy and I used a lasercutter to cut it out of acrylic, to make sure that it looks good before I actually cut from my aluminum stock. For some reason the laser burned the acrylic, you can probably see the brown spots.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/magnus213/P1050264-1.jpg
I'm glad that I did a prototype. I realized that some sections of the chassis were too narrow/weak, some were too close or completely missed required holes, things like that. I'm too lazy to do another render, but I added a little bit of material and shaped it out a little bit.
With some luck, I'll be cutting it out of aluminum tomorrow night. Keep an eye out.

Will do. Unfortunately, at this point of the project (the end) I'm at the mercy of my friend who has access to a waterjet. We were supposed to meet up and get this done on Wednesday night, but she needs a grad student there to officially "supervise" and couldn't make it happen. Aaand she just emailed me again telling me that she "really should study for this exam until next Friday." Ugh. I'll keep trying to make it happen.
In the meantime, it's been a busy January for me in R/C terms. First, I bought a couple new toys: a pair of HPI Super F1s. One is in good running shape, and set up for 200mm bodies. I just finished building it yesterday and I hope to test it out this weekend.

It's waiting on a few parts to finish it up, mainly bearings and things for the rear axle.
I'm currently selling a bunch of my stuff on eBay, and I'm looking to get rid of the HPI F10 I have sitting around. When the second F1 is finished I'll take some pictures of it next to the F10 to see how far HPI has come in however many years. I have my eye on a couple of cars, depending on how much I make from my sales-- I'm going to pick up a nice Pro 2, and I'm talking to a guy about his Pro D as well. I have a brushless system that's just waiting for a sedan, and I think I want to drift a little bit.

I think I got a pretty good deal on it, trading my F10 plus some cash.
Let me think now... what's my current car count?
1. Micro RS4
2. RS4 3 Evo
3. Pro 4 (sold)
4. Savage X SS
5. Super Nitro
6. F10 (now traded)
7. Super F1 (x2)
8. Pro D
Oh man. I probably should have held on to that Pro 4 and saved some effort now, but I wasn't really into electric at that point. However, 6-foot piles of snow outside do a good job of pushing one towards electric.

Yeah, the guy has that Super priced too high. The car appears to need a complete overhaul. No way I'm paying 270.00 for a dirty Super. The least he could do is clean it.
The NSX yeah 80 to 100, I can see that. But 160.00 for a V12 body (shaking my head).

BTW,
I have a few 280 and 300mm Bodies that I am willing to part with. Sorry, the prices are kind of high (even I admit that), but once they are out of my hands, the chances of me ever seeing one again is very low.
If interested, PM me, but I can tell you now, if I don't get any bites by late March, I'm sure the painters-bug will bite me and I will pull them off the available shelf :).

So, a quick update on my custom chassis fab: I went to the lab tonight with my flaky friend to finally get on the waterjet. We spent a long time getting the CAD file situated to fit on the piece of stock I have, but when we went to cut... No garnet. For those unfamiliar with the waterjet, it's a tool that uses high-pressure water with a bit of garnet mixed in to cut through metal and other materials.
So the chassis is postponed once more, what a pain. There is some good news: I managed to fit four chassis on the stock. Two Super Nitro chassis, and two RS4 3 chassis. That means that, provided that the design works without problem, I'll have an extra to sell. If that sounds interesting to you, let me know.
I'll keep you guys posted, I promise I'm trying as hard as I can to get it done!

You have a Porsche GT2 Body? Nooooo Wayyyyyy. The only GT2 body that I know of is the Kyosho GT2. The HPI version is a Porsche Turbo body.
If you had the Kyosho GT2 Body, I would have given you an unpainted Viper and a Murceilago body just for the GT2 :)

I may buy a Super Nitro roller and a RTR one locally. I don't know the specifics of the cars right now.
I have no use for them, but I would buy it and then sell it to one of you guys.
Would anyone be interested in them?

Haha. I have 8 cars in my 3-person dorm room and that's about the upper limit. I think I'm going to sell the Pro 2 I just got because my brushless motor doesn't fit and I really don't have a need for it, nice as it is.
If either of the cars comes with a particularly nice body shell, I'd consider buying that separately.
So... anyone want a very nice Pro 2?

Well the price on both bodies decided to take off today for no apparent reason, so much for sneaking in on a good price. I can't believe that GT-One went for only $63 earlier in the week.
I borrowed a friend's car and drove to the nearest hobby shop to Boston, which is 30 minutes away. They didn't have any of the parts I needed on hand, and the only paint they had of gold, white, and silver was gold. What shop doesn't have plenty of white and silver paint on hand?
Fortunately, they had a couple pairs of white Super Star wheels for the Super Nitro so I picked those up. I couldn't find any white ones on eBay, so we'll call it a good find.

The paint is peeling off the shell and has spidery cracks in certain places. I bought DOT-4 brake fluid and I'd really like to change the way this thing looks. Any opinions? Obviously I'd really prefer not to trash the body attempting to remove the paint, but it can't really get any uglier.

Magnus I have tried the DOT 4 method on a 10 year old painted super nitro Porsche and had great results. It took about 6 hours total, but all I had to do was just keep coating the paint every 30 or 45 minutes. At the end it was all just falling off. I did have to redo the area where the wing mounts, but all told very easy. My total labor time was probably 45 minutes including washing it off.

That's great news, thanks! I've never used brake fluid before and I'm concerned about the effect it will have on the decals. I know they're on the outside of the shell, but I'm sure the fluid gets all over the place. Maybe I'll tape over them? I don't have time to try this today, maybe Wednesday.
You're from Duluth? I grew up off of 141 and Old Alabama, at college now! Wish we'd known each other sooner.
In other news, I've received word that my custom Super Nitro (and RS4 3) chassis are FINALLY waterjetted, and I'll be picking them up in a couple of hours. Expect some pictures later today!

When I removed the paint on mine, I taped over all the decals twice. Even still some of the decals, like the exhaust tips started coming lose. So I removed the exhaust decals and used a heat gun to warm the adhesive on the back of the decal up. Once it was sticky again I just put it back on the body. Have ran it twice since then and no problems with them releasing.
I am off Peachtree Industrial (140) on the border of Berkeley Lake and Duluth.

It's not the most elegant solution, but the best way to ensure proper hole placement is to clamp the stock and custom pieces together and drill straight through the stock part. Of course, that requires disassembly of the entire car. Hopefully I'll be getting that done tomorrow. I've got a couple job interviews on campus on Wednesday and nothing to do in between, so I'll probably be able to get my holes drilled out then.
The chassis is obviously quite long and narrow. There is some flex front to back, but it isn't drastic. I'll provide a subjective review once I have the stock piece uninstalled and in my hands for comparison. The torsional stiffness is pretty solid though - the chassis doesn't tweak at all even with a strong effort.
More pictures soon!

The weight of the custom piece is actually right on par with the weight of the stock chassis. There's a lot of removed material, but the thickness (3.18 mm vs. 2.5 mm) is a pretty significant increase across the entire shape.
I didn't know that HPI ever offered an upgraded Super chassis, so I can't help you there. I don't know how I'll finish this piece. I sandblasted the custom chassis I did for my RS4 3, which looked pretty decent but wasn't particularly exciting. I'm going to go ahead and say that anodizing isn't an option because it's rather pricey (aka, not free).
If possible, I'll try to sandblast it again or I'll see if I can get it on a buffing wheel. It really all depends on who's willing to let me use their machine shop.

Stock chassis has been pulled. Tugging on both of the units, I have to say that my design has less tweak longitudinally as well as torsionally. This is pretty exciting, since up to this point I didn't really know whether my new design was going to be an improvement or just a differently-shaped piece of metal.
As I said before, the plan is to get the holes drilled out tomorrow.

That chassis looks good magnus. I used to run a Mutlicam router for a sign shop, we were able to place the holes in the material and also countersink it. Is that not possible with the machine that you used? As for paint if you had access to a 6 to 12 volt battery charger, anodizing yourself is pretty cheap and not to hard. But it is addictive, so make sure to hide all other metal parts.
Cuda I almost bid on that body, but decided against it. Glad to see it in good hands, looks great with the black wheels.

I would have liked to cut the chassis on a CNC mill, but the shop guys on campus are pretty protective of their stuff and don't let you use the machines for personal projects. I had to be sneaky and get a friend with access to a waterjet to cut my chassis for me. It's much faster than milling, but quite expensive. It's on the order of $100 per hour to run...
There are some other students around here who have anodized their own stuff, but I'd end up paying a bit to gather the materials. I also live in a fraternity house, and it's simply not practical to set up a big and nasty chemical process.

Well, in typical fashion I wasn't able to get the machining done that I wanted to. I had two job interviews today 6 hours apart and decided against going into the machine shop in my nice clothes before the second one.
I wish I could say that it'll get done soon, but it'll be another week at the earliest. I'm visiting New York this weekend with my girlfriend, flying straight to Detroit for job interviews until Tuesday. Heading back to Detroit again for another company on Friday... no rest!
Contender, hopefully you're holding a Diablo body that I can buy off you in the spring? Just checking.
As a consolation for my failed chassis effort, I got my drift wheels and tires in from Hong Kong today for my Pro-D. I mocked up my GT3 body to get a feel for them... I'm a big fan. The actual shell will be an HPI Aero Supra. Wheels are (probably a knock-off, put perfect replica of) HPI LM-R wheels. 32mm front and 35mm rear. Please disregard paint bleeding :-/

Contender, I just finished off a Ken Block style Evo X for one of my 1/10th scale cars. I used my vinyl cutter to create the mask, but it did not work out that great in some areas. Would you mind sharing how you mask off areas? I have only seen one car of yours that has had any bleeding, just looking for some advice.

I'm in the process of stripping the paint off the GT-One using DOT3/4 brake fluid. I'm applying an even coat, letting it sit about an hour, and rubbing it off.
It's slow goings, but it's working. Each hour interval seems to remove one layer of paint. I'm starting to get through the white. I think I'll start doing half-hour intervals and see if it works as well, I don't want to be here all night...

The unfortunate thing is, if you don't already have one of these bodies, you have to "pay" to get into the club. With them being rare items, the prices on are running higher and higher these days. Most of the prices I'm seeing are 60.00 and up. Lets not even talk about a 280mm Kyosho Body, Those are up in the 80s to 100.00 range if you can even find them.
Sorry, I don't know anything about the protoform 1/8 bodies.

That's the thing, there aren't enough of them to race anymore. Put it this way, when I was racing mine, we had a constant of like 14 to 20 guys who had them. So we always had enough for two heats and then qualifying for the A-main.
Then you had the HPI challenges where you had about 30 guys show up for this class. Man those were the days :)

Judging by the way the body flows front-to-back, I think I'll be doing a three-color scheme. The front of the car has pretty distinct 'depths' for the nose, fenders, and body in between. I'll probably assign a color to each portion and carry them through to the back.
What colors those will be, I'm not sure. I have gold, white, silver, and black paint on hand but I was planning to use the gold and white on a different shell. Red, white, and black usually look good together but I think gold, white, and black could be interesting as well.

Magnus, did you use DOT 4 brake fluid? When I removed mine I did not have any fogging with it. I know DOT 3 caused fogging in some cases. Keep us posted on the paint job. I am currently creating the decals for the Monster car, then it is on to a super body.

It's "DOT 3 and 4" (both, apparently) brake fluid. Upon inspection the fogginess appears to be soap scum or something that can be cleaned off, so I'll get on it when I have more time.

I figured out the fogginess today- I'm pretty sure it was just dried brake fluid that was left over when I left the body to soak overnight. A paper towel and a dab of fresh fluid got rid of most of pretty quickly.
However, when I wiped down the body with a wet (with water) paper towel before starting to tape things off, the residue seemed to reappear. Not sure what to do, so I just taped the body up anyway.
I'm going to do a three-color scheme. The fenders and sides, which are all one region, are going to be black. The nose piece, which flows around the cockpit and makes up the top surface of the shell, is going to be white. The depressed regions between the nose and fenders is going to be gold, as will the cockpit. It's going to taper off into a teardrop shape seen from above.
I've finished taping off the white and gold areas, and I plan to hit it with black tomorrow. We're suppose to have mid-40s temperatures, so if I let the cans warm up I should be able to get at least the black done without problems.

Speaking of which, I just wrapped up my first color on the GT-1 recovery project, which was black. The paint up front is iffy- this is an old and battle-scarred shell, so I'm not sure what defects are a result of that or of the paint removal process. Anyway, I'm happy just to have paint on the thing. The next color will be gold.

Alright guys, let's play a game of "guess what Magnus paid." As I mentioned earlier, this is an HPI RS4 Rally that I bought last week. Take a look at the photos and guess how much I paid for this car. Some details:
- full rolling chassis
- carbon shock towers and motor brace
- three full sets of wheels and tires, two pretty new and one worn out
- complete underbody and inner body in great shape
- front one-way
- upgraded rear shocks
- 2-speed for electric RS4 (!!)
- very nicely painted, unscuffed classic Impreza body that I forgot to photograph

Well team, the GT-One strip/repaint is done. The results are... well, it's a learning experience. Things I learned:
- yes, DOT3/4 brake fluid removes paint from a Lexan shell without hurting the material itself.
- the most effective method is to apply a light coat of the fluid over all of the paint, let it sit for about an hour, then rub with a paper towel. The paint seems to come off one coat per time.
- I used the brake fluid to touch-up some overspray between repainting coats and it worked very nicely.
- something about either the paint I was stripping or the brake fluid left a residue on the plastic. It may or may not have had something to do with a wet paper towel wipe-down I did before painting as well.
- unfortunately, the brake fluid likes to remove all adhesives and will come after your stickers and decals. While none of mine starting peeling off the car, they became crinkled and accumulated some kind of saturation behind them. Doesn't look so hot, check the pictures.
- painting a car without the film on the outer surface is not easy.
A lot of things went wrong to make this car look not-so-good. The body is old and beat up, and many cracks surfaced in the painting process. The decals were soiled pretty badly by the brake fluid. I bought "Pearl White," which for some reason was more interested in being pearly than being opaque. I had to back it with the lightest color I had, which is silver. So it's not pure white like I had wanted (should have bought "Spring White"). Finally, my tape was giving me problems. I couldn't get clean edges from my thin tape, and for whatever reason the thicker tape decided to leave invisible residue on the Lexan that shows up as snakey cracks in the white/silver paint.
Despite the less-than-stellar result, I had a good time with the project. I enjoy painting even though I'm pretty poor at it! I have to say that the final verdict considering paint stripping has to be: definitely not worth the effort if you can just buy a brand new shell. Obviously I didn't have that option, so I don't feel bad.

Looks good Magnus, as someone that has done the brake fluid trick I know how hard it is. The Porsche I did would have been a throw away body if it was 200MM, but since it was a super I went for it. Also check your PM's in a minute.

I'm impressed how fast you turned that project around. Don't beat yourself up the car looks ok and you can run the car worry free then if the body and paint were show quality.
Gold or White rims might set that car off.
Nice job.
