Associated cars arent cheap (I assume you are talking about the NTC3). If you pay some attention to shaft drive cars with one single shaft, they all use ball diff that require dogbones to come off to adjust the diff. The reason for this is because they have diff cases that cover the diffs. You can look at the trendy single shaft electric cars that is in the market right now. Although they are electric, the drivetrain design is much like that of the NTC3/TC3.

All the race stadium trucks use ball diff too for the adjustability. They also require a dogbone to come off for adjusting the diff. Once again, the diff is enclose in a diff case.

As for super cars, I wont use the term super car but rather competitional cars. The NTC3 is up to the task to be a competitional cars. It won many races just like the serpents and mugens. I am saying this not to side with Associated. In my collection of RC cars, I own a few mugens such as the MRX3 and also an Associated NTC3. The NTC3 is just as good as the other cars out there for its class.

I had an NTC3 and considered it to be cheap, only because it tended to be fragile. Things broke on it much more easily than on my Mugen. Everyone I know who has an NTC3 had to sink a lot more money into upgrades for it to be competitive with the Mugen and Serpent products.

This is just my opinion! :-)

for sway bars use the tamiya ta04 rears (53442). as for the mv12, that thing has some heat. after 10 tanks of mashing it, my pull start cord broke, con-rod snapped, wrist pin cracked, piston chipped, and sleeve wore LOL!! but then again, that was my first engine so i'm sure there were a lot of things i didn't do right.

Well said. Another thing to do is keep an eye on ebay..Sometimes parts will pop up. I've been running a Fantom .12 in my prime 12 for the last 2 years..Its still on the original Piston and sleeve..I've run 55% nitro boat fuel with Nitro blast through it for about 10 tanks. ;) I guess I should mention I have a replacement piston and sleeve for it as well just in case :) But with that mixture it flew like a bat outta hell!!

Anyone know where to pick up replacement gears for the 2 speed? I also need the replacement pinions :(..I may pull my car outta retirement for some parking lot fun :)

I haven't been to hobby world in a long time..I guess I'll have to checkem out again..they never had parts for the p12 or msx 3 when I was going there :(

bigG- Did you need the drive shaft or the dogbones? 2WD isn't TOO bad but its no the same as 4wd and can be frustrating at times..You'll spin out A LOT!!! If you're missing the dogbones I can search through my old supply.the ends on mine are pobably bent a little, but witha samll ahmme you can straighten them back out..I'll check my box tomorrow.

Temjin006

The store I go to stock many msx3 parts. They have alot of dogbones, arms, shock tower, steering knuckle and c hubs. They have alot of mugen parts for msx, mtx, and mrx. If anyone here cant find a part, I can help get them and ship it out.

Hey Lost Racer1, long time no see. I just got a 1/8th mrx3 on road, and I dont have time for my prime 12 anymore because 1/8th is so much faster and the handling is insane.

Hey Temjin- Yeah..I've been off the map for a bit..Put my P12 on the shelf and hoping to be able to get back in it. next time you're at the shop, would you mind looking up 2 speed gear replacements for me? I'd appreciate it. 1/8 scale..that was going to be my next adventure..then financail defeat played a part..haha. So now I'm trying to ease back into it.

bigG- Unless you have EXTREMELY good throttle control, you'll probably end up all over the place. I'd suggest maybe playing with the suspension a bit and try to adjust for rear wheel drive if you really want to try it. Take it out test drive it a bit and see if you can handle it..if not then see about finding that shaft..Have you tried NitroHouse yet?

Needler56

What do you guys use for the header the standard one looks pritty crap!!!

The current car I have two different headers in which I change them to tune with gear ratio to different track to get the best performance. I have found the more torque less rpm header to be better everywhere except from a standstillas I run a higher gear ratio. It is fine for even the slowest corners and with the right gearing pulls an enormas amount of speed.

Which brand type do you use for the msx 3 with MV12

i have the rear exhaust one, gives a lot of top end. very shiny and it fits kind of close to the center of the chassis, so i had to re-position the fuel tank.

has anyone considered a different fuel tank that sits lower and/or making the steering servo laydown?

I have fitted my car with a kyosho V one R tank and JPL tune pipe and hearder. The engine provides heaps or grunt I must admit I'm impressed.

jamess46 as to the tune
Every engine is different the tune is different for everyone everytime you use it even different within the same day, The fuel you use will play a big part in how your engine is tuned.

As for mine the bottem end needel in screwed almost al the way in out about 3/4 of a turn. The top end screwed in 1/2 turn from factory settings. These are approximate. To tune your engine screw the top needel out a lot then tune the bottem end first making sure that the engine will idel and start to rev up cleanly. My engine will sit and idel for 3 4 minutes before stalling. It will splutter a bit after that long ideling but want flood.

Does anyone know if there is supposed to be a head shim there is one in the instructions but there isn't one it the engine. Just checking as I have never run a car without a head shim before.

Hi

I own a prime 12 with some aluminium options, and i'm buying an os cvr for it and a 2speed.
Just wanted to know if the tamiya sway bars for the TA04 were also good for prime 12.
I know someone on this forum said they were good, but he didn t precise if it was for the msx or prime 12.

frozenpod
10-03-2004, 07:57 PM
I don't know if they fit the prime 12 but don't buy them!!!! They are useless. I brought them for the msx and they don't do a thing. They really are the wrong shape and the thickest is about 0.8mm which is about half what you would want to run. The the sway bar adjusted as hard as possible the difference was very very small.

I'm currently looking for something else if anybody has found any please let me know.

PS if you want a two speed let me know

jamess46
10-10-2004, 06:26 PM
hey guys just wanted to post real quick before signing off. i got my car tuned right and it is running cherry. to give you guys a little help tune the low needle first. when the car is at operating temp. adjust the low speed needle after adjustment pinch the fuel line. if the car shuts off quickly your too lean. if the car shuts off after five seconds them your good. after 5 seconds or more then your too rich. an engine can run without a head shim but is not recommended. if the shim is removed then the compression in the motor is raised. has anyone found any aluminum parts for the msx 3? i'm still looking. mugen just has a thing for forgetting about the older cars. they don't even have an online manual anymore. hey temjin006 if 7you've got plenty of 2 speed gears then hook me up man you can never have enough spur gears. well gotta go for now.

It spins freely? is this with or without the clutch nut on? Have you taken it aprt to make sure the pin was still attached in the conrod and not broken? How was your compression before?

yea i got the crankshaft out. it was pretty rusted so i was suggested to use wd-40 and wipe off the rust with a wire brush and/or use a dremel. i was kind of skeptical about it so i went with some rust remover call "naval jelly."

the first pass took of about 99% of the rust, then i did it again. i guess i did it too much and that it took off a lot of the shine on the crankshaft. now i don't know if that's chrome plating, or just shined metal, but the all the internals of the engine feel as though they move freely and smoothly.

everything still feels tight. is the strength of my crankshaft now reduced?

i haven't ran it yet because my starter box is out and the thread on the crankshaft is ruined. i'm gonna check out tower hobbies for both.

Never heard of naval jelly before...not sure if its compromised the integrity of the shaft..Probably not. You say the internals feel like they move freely and smoothly?? Is this with the plug in or without? How long have you had the engine? Maybe time for a rebuild?

yea the internals still feel the same as when i first go the engine. i've had the engine since the first few pages of this thread. i was wondering, does anyone know the dye nut size for the threaded shaft of the crankshaft? or can that be replaced totally? btw, how's your car running lost racer?

I had the equivalent Novarossi engione before..Unfortunately I don't remember the exact dye size..its been about 3 years :p. My car is still sitting on my entertainment center at home..LOL! It awaiting its new spur gears. I just haven't had much time to work on it. I think I'll pull it out this week..Maybe I'll rebuild my engine too while I'm at it..I'm amazed my little FR12 is still running!! 3 years old..I've run everything from 20% to 55% w/nitro blast through it and it just keeps going..I still have a replacement piston and sleeve to go in it..LOL!! Hey LostRacer... I saw that you have SuperTen GP while browsing through the forums...do you know if there is any chance that center shafts from SuperTen(or FW-04) will fit the Prime12? I know the Super 10 is bigger, but they looked similar...

reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to put the viscous coupling unit for Super 10 to MSX. If any 1 of the center shafts length just match or is similar regardless of the position, (SuperTen rear shaft to Prime front shaft, or vice versa...) I'm gonna buy one and see what happens ;)

Hi all, just purchased a 2nd hand MSX-3 and was wondering what other clutches will fit this. I saw mention of an HPI one, and was wondering if this fits without modification.

Also I saw stuff about CVDs, did anyone ever find any that fit.

Lastly what about manifolds for a rear exhaust engine to bend round for a side exhuast?

Cheers,

Got the MSX3 running eventually after having real trouble getting a good connection on the glow plug. It ran OK, but drove like a bus. I found 1 shock leaking oil, so took it apart to discover no bladder in it. I ordered some new bladders, and then decided to strip all the shocks. all the other 3 were bone dry, and had never had any oil in  .

Needless to say with oil in he car handles much better :) . Having re-set the throttle/brake linkage, and tuned the engine it goes pretty well for the stock engine, although it is a little sluggish at the bottom end and pull away, although I am used to electric, with it's instant delivery from rest.

I notice that there is a lot of play in the suspension, expecially the 'C' hubs, is this normal? My HPI Pro2 has almost no play. Is it worth shimming to get rid of the side-slop on the pins?

So, what is the opinion on the best/first upgrades?

Simon

PrimeAKF11
02-18-2005, 11:46 PM
Definitely get the 2 speed for the first upgrade. Since MSX includes ball bearings, nothing is really 'essential' for the use. But in single speed form the car is just slooooooooooow :p

It's always good to shim the suspension down to the point there is almost no play. Weird that your car have them tho. Mine is pretty tight in stock form. Check around the suspension mounts and pins to see if they are bent or out of alignment...

oh btw if you're going to get a 2 speed, get the newer one. I had the old one before and... frankly it's worthless.

Have you tried it out yet? How is it handling..I may have to try to find one for both of my cars :)

I only had a chance to run it once after the modification (had to go back to college :( )so I don't know yet, but considering the weight you're adding to the drivetrain, I don't think it's really worth it. It did however decrease some understeer, and I felt the rear end coming around more lively like a rear-wheel drive car.

I'll have to wait test it at a track this summer to see how it goes .. :)

Well.. I decided..I'm pulling my car out of retirement. I tore most of it down last night, replaced bearings and rebuilt my 2 speed. And my Fantom Engine from 3 years ago still has AWSOME compression!! Its unfreakin believable!! I've run so much through this engine its ridiculous..I've run up to 55% nitro w/ Nitro blast through this engine and it just won't stop!! 55% is boat fuel BTW. Yeah it ran hot but insanely fast.I still have the spare piston and sleeve I bought brand new for 3 years ago as well..:) Wow I can't wait for the weather to stabilize :)

I have some new parts as well including the 2-speed. Also I can sell some aluminium parts like the suspension arms, the chassis, the central arms that holds the spurgears. (these are used but in excellent shape)
I have a nice front bumper that I did myself which is way larger that the original.

I can take pics if you like. I can sell lots or the entire car as well.
I loved my prime 12, but now it s becoming hard to race it as the parts support is lacking.

I also have a OS .12 CV-R with an RD logic pipe that I might sell if anyone has an offer. I used less than half a gallon on it.
