I think you use powder and have to till it in but I am not sure.

Just sprinkle the powder on top and water it in. A better option is to use powdered calcium chloride. It's available at "feed and seed" shops.

i've got a question for yall. i'm not really build a track but i am building a place to run my 1/18 trucks. so far i've got a jump, a ditch to crawl through, and a random pile of dirt. I was looking for some suggestions for some more obstacles to make.

You can throw on as much as you like. Not too much. Calcium is more expensive than soap. Check this out http://www.allstatesasphalt.com/nf-sv-8.htm

Just from what T've have seen, 48' x 96' would be the smallest for a nitro
12' lanes on paved surfaces. Smaller could be done (oval)

I am looking to make an indoor onroad track for 1/10, 1/18 and 1/36 and others. I kind of know the setup for the track. For any track owner, what did you use for barriers?? Also, I know I need a computer and transponders.. where did u get your transponders from? Any other advise would be grateful as well.
I race offroad at my lhs.. and they have a ton of on-raod car inventory. It just does not seem right to have all this inventory and no place to run them. I understand that offroad is "cooler" and all.. but onroad can be just as competative and they are fast in their own right. As far as 1/36 and 1/18 and such.. counting by hand may be best.. but I will look into this more.. as the 1/18 and smaller scales are popular now. I have seen tracks come and go.. so we will see. What would be really cool.. but maybe not practical is this... do a "nascar" type race season. Go do say 3-4 different tracks in a points series.. I know this is prob not practical but would be cool.
Thanks,
Mike

I have looked at indoor layouts and will incorporate some of their layout.. but with my own personal touches. I am hoping 5-6 at one time.. i think over that many and the track will be too cluttered with cars.. as far as driver stand... I am looking at a rise and not a full fledged stand. Thanks for all the input.. any more would be grateful.

Ed from dirtburners in Michigan and who ever is running Planet RC in indianapolis they will give you the scoop of how much it costs. Dirtburners hobby shop is still open however track is closed. Planet rc was almost shut down. I think outdoor would be so much cheaper to run. What area are you in? You also should contact the person who ran west olive he shut his track down for other reasons. I think these guys could give you some good info Also contact Josh Cyrul his track is down the street from me and his has been very successful

Well scattershot, lap counting equipment may run up to $7000 new from AMBrc or as little as $2000 for a used AMB20 system. Other systems are available and are much cheaper. So before taking that plunge, try see if you can get by with hand counting and setting up a club savings fund for the AMBrc.

Still wanting to know this. I've started building my track. Already put down 20 yds. of dirt with 150 yds. coming. I've packed it down the best I could by hand, then drove my Dodge over everything to pack it further. It's packed down well, but I think it would get really rough fast. I added some calcium to the dirt. It definitely helps in retaining moisture. Still want to know the secret to "groove" a track.

trailranger
03-15-2007, 12:11 AM
well, OZITE is it for the quick setup and teardowns.
But if you have access to a faclity with a concrete floor, that will be suitible for rubber tire racing. Scub and degrease the floor with muradic acid, concrete etcher, or some other acid based concrete cleaner. Just wear a mask, old clothes, gloves, and I used a pump sprayer to get the acid on the floor. If there is any rough lines and spots from the surface finishing work, buy a concret sanding block ($35) and get those babys smoothed out.
You can try using traction additives, but those over time become the problem since dust likes to stick to it. Outdoor use of HVT is fine since there is such thing as rain, wind, and sun to break the HVT up and wash it off.

Hello there. First time posting is this specific thread. Just thinking though and I don't know if anyone has asked this before but... Anyone ever thought of making a portable track? ( the lay out and stuff) and its like easy ensemble and just bring it to were you want to race around? I want to build one ( most likely out of wood ) Any thoughts?
crazy4wdracer
03-15-2007, 05:35 PM
Yes, I sort of made a portable track, it was made of old tires and pieces of wood. It worked well until i started hitting the tires and breaking bulkhead after bulkhead on my B4 i got an aluminum one and now i am breaking arms :D

Materials that bounce are the worst ones to use as barriers. After you hit a tire and compress the rubber it rebounds and pushes back out, so its like hitting it even harder. PVC is good because it doesn't bounce but is light enough to move a little when you hit it. Also it can be rearranged using various joints etc. The drainage hose is good for the same reason. It moves but doesn't pop back out at the car.

Here is something to get you all thinking..
I want to build an indoor onroad/offroad track. How you ask? I have an idea, is this possible???
OK, If I take cinder blocks, and build a wall 80' long, 40' wide, and 4' tall. Inside this pit, I will build my nice 1/10 scale off-road track, obviouslt with jumps less than 4' tall. On top of the cinder blocks will run a track of some sort. After the off-road racing is complete, I can drop down a grid. Stacked up against the wall will be a bunch of plywood type track sections covered in Ozite carpet. I can assemble the track pieces in the grid, and tape the cracks with fabric tape. OR, can I make these tight enough to keep me from having to tape them together. Once the pieces are together, we will have our on-road carpet track.
It will be built and designed to hold up to 450lbs of turn marshals, just in case more than one is required.
What do you think????
I would love to have two separeate tracks, but space is not something that I have a lot of.
rdlb23
03-16-2007, 11:23 AM
That sounds like a ton of work and a ton of fun. Seems like it would make the onroad track easy to modify and the offroad track difficult to modify, since moving tools and dirt over a 4ft wall is kind of annoying. I hope you are doin this in a place you own because its a lot of work for somewhere you can;t use for a long period of time. If you get this going were all gonna want to see pictures.
by my pisspoor estimating skills thats 1080 blocks! its usually about $1 a block to have them laid with the concrete you will be looking at thousands of dollars unless you can lay the block yourself, around here a 8x8x16 runs about 70 cents so its going to cost over a thousand bucks for the materials and concrete alone. Do you have a club? Little Rock is a big town talk to the city Parks and Recreation Department and get them to let you build a public rc track on city ground, I have been working with my hometown and we are now getting set to design and build both a dirt oval 60 x 120 and a dirt offroad probably about the same but over two acres are at our disposal so it may end up bigger. This wouldn't be indoor but you could do the carpet track in your indoor space and just race dirt in the summer season and carpet in the winter.
this forum won't let you search for people in your town but rcuniverse will, I was able to show that there are nearly 150 registered users in and around my town, this helped with the city deal, there is a history of city and county Parks and Recreation Departments that provider rc racing tracks on public ground
1. City of Trumball Connecticut
2. City of Kirkwood Missouri
3. City of Sunnyvale California
4. Silver Springs Township Pennsylvania
5. City of Burlington Washington
6. City of Jefferson City Missouri
7. City of East Wenatchee Washington
8. City of Columbia Missouri

13. Kern County California
14. City of Antigo Wisconsin
15. Frederick County Maryland
16. City of Cleveland Ohio
17. City of Aurora Colorado
18. Nassau County New York
and I am sure there are a boatload more as several I was told about I could not verify off the net because they are in smaller cities with no real web page to print off for my officials to look at, these were all found on the net and submitted as proof that this is a common park activity for the modern age.
If they try to pull the insurance and "its dangerous" bs on you tell them to check the Center for Disease control, they only track injuries which result in more than 1000 Emergency room visits each year, we don't even make the list, on the list is some things I am sure little rock is allready providing without insurance such as
Playgrounds
Bicycles-trails, pipes, and even parks in some cases
Softball
Basketball
Soccer
Skateboarding
Swimming
Racquet Sports
Golf
Skating
My town spends more in one year on painting the tennis and basketball courts than this entire project is going to cost so $ is a really poor excuse also.

JUST WONT WORK,
I used to race in a building that had an indoor concrete track and an indoor off road track right next to it. The drit and dust would always migrate onto the onroad. This would make for a slick track with all the lose dust.
No matter what you build your top floor out of, you are looking at at least 2"x8"s to support the on road track. That would be if building codes allow.

You need Round-Up or any other "ground clear" herbicide type killer. Weed killers only target weeds, ground clearing will target everything including trees in the right concentrations. To kill the plants you need to spray the leaves, so don't mow or weed-eat for a little while to get those leaves nice and big to absorb the Round-Up. And dont mow the weeds/grass till it is completely dead and brown. I use this for my fence row every spring keep me from having to bust out the weed eater all year long.
Follow the directions on the bottle, and use a pump sprayer that can "mist" the herbicide. You don't want to go overboard and and soak the ground, just have to wet the plant leaves. These chemicals have been know to pollute ground water, so only use what you need.

Hey guys,
I'm not sure if this is just for back yard tracks or not, but i did see some actual working lhs tracks and what not through the pages so here it goes.
I've got alot of land to work with, and i'm trying to decide on the size of the track. 200x200' or 200x150 or 200x100. 200 feet being the length, and the second mesurement the depth from the drivers stand.
I'm purchasing my transponders and charging rack this week, and my decoder soon. I will be using a 8x8.5x40' shipping container as the driver stand (painted of course) and then I will add windows for the computer shack inside the container itself. So the drivers stand will be 40' in length.
Dirt, is undecided, but i've found some really nice red dirt with a nice clay mixture in it, just got to talk to some people about hauling it.
If I could get some suggestions on track size that would be great!

I think 150 is good for depth.... because 200 might be a little too much to see the cars going, but if the track is wide enough it wont matter so much... You should stand on the container and place a RC car 200 feet away on the track and see if you can see it well... because the bigger the better really.

RcBro,
I have constructed many rc tracks, if there is one good point i can make about the set up of a track is make sure that it can drain rain water! No water sitting on the tracks low areas. 200 ft. is long so make sure you can see the lanes of jumps and rollers from the driver stand with out anything to block sight of the car.
Have fun!!

youre right step ups are amazing... they give a rythm that no other jump can give you.
You jump hard up, and as soon as youre about to decent you hit the top, climax builds and you fly off onto a landing... awesome.

He traxxman, We started three years ago on a very tight buget as well( my pocketbook). I went to a local building contractor and told him my plans(We are part of our churches outreach program) and he loaned me a bobcat to start the track. This is our third year and we've continued to improve the track with every spare dime that comes in. We have kept the price to drive at $2.00 per family for our practice days and that has helped to draw more drivers. This year, the group of guys we race at other tracks with came together and put in alot of labor, and we ended up getting 60 yards of clay donated by one of the church members.(huge blessing) I also bought a johndeer tractor with a loader to move the dirt around. Last year however,we put 50 yards of clay on the track at $70 per load. And too boot, I moved 3/4 of it by myself with a shovel and wheelbarrel. I guess what I'm telling you here is go to any resource you may have and try to get help. Plan on alot of backaching labor. Start small, you can always make it bigger later, we did. We bought the drain tubing at Lowes or TSC or eho ever had the cheapest price when we needed it. Lowes sells a square compacting tamper for about $25 and it is a must for shaping and compacting your jumps. And while I'm talking jumps, keep them smaller to start with. A 12" high jump will launch a car 8'-16' thru the air depending on your speed and launch angle. Anything bigger breaks cars alot more :( We started with 8' wide lanes but with more and more monster trucks and 1/8th scale trucks and buggies showing up, we widened the whole track to between 11-12' lanes. Any other questions please feel free to pm me or repost here. be Blessed, Rick

I live in Finland and would like to buy a RCP track. Is it only available through Kyosho when outside USA/Canada?
Kyosho (at least here in the nordic countries) is as fast as a herd of snails stampeding through glue regarding delivery and support and I wouldn't really want to buy via them.

You guys have any tips for killing weeds?
Metla

Weeds?
Drive over em regularly :D
Once removed they tend to stay away unless the track is left unused for a couple of weeks, then BANG, shes a jungle.
anyhow, I went to a farm supplies store and bought a product called TAG, Though it will go by another name in other parts of the world, Anyway, The crap kills the weeds, and poisons the ground so nothing will grow for up to 9 months.
When I see some new weeds crop up in a few months time I'll know its due for another coating, and when I say coating, Thats exactly what I done, coated every square inch of the track in the stuff.
Anyhow, Go to a far supply store and they will point you in the right direction.

Thanks I will look into that. The spots that I do drive on are weedless but everywhere else is starting to get thick, I have been cutting it down with a flat shovel but that only cuts off the top so it can grow right back and it dosnt take long for it to grow back. But I drive every day for 20 minutes so my driving lines are spotless its just the damn outsides of the turns that are turning into a jungle

looks like you had to bring in some dirt for that track, how many yards did you have to get? How does it work having just dirt for the barriers, it looks like it would work fine but I have never been on a track without pipes so I wouldnt know.

Here are some pics of my track, I run electric 1/8 scale on it, I have neighbors really close so I made the electric car so now I run on it every day and I doubt my neighbors even know that I am running, but if I ran my Nitro Truggy on it that would be a different story. These pics were taken right about when I finished the track so there was no weeds yet, and also since then the track has had some work, it is still very similar but a bit different.

No idea how much dirt I used, We had a few piles of crap around the section so I just moved it in usibng a bobcat by the bucket load to set out the track, Then done the same for the surface.
My budget was zero which is why I used dirt, Its a pain in the arse as already I'm not happy with a couple of corners but changing them is going to take hours on a shovel.
Have since acquired a roll of pipe which I have used to define some of the corners better.
In a perfect world I would have set out the track with the black pipe, Then only built dirt berms where needed.
My track is designed for 1/10 scale buggies, so the scale is small, and the track is twisty. a gas buggy or a low turn brushless wouldn't have a hope on it.
I currently run a Novak 8.5 in my main buggy.

Good luck getting the track in shape.
Also a quick question about killing the weeds, if I spray down weed killer is there a certain amount of time that I shouldnt water or drive on the track after spraying?

I dunno, dude... just think about that poison being in the dirt and when your cars kick up the dust and you breathe it in.
Can't be good. :(
Seems like there's something else you can use, but I forget what it is. Strong salt water, maybe. Anybody remember?

I am designing a track for my spare lot. I have a bit of room so I plan the track to be about 160' x 80'. I drew it up with track maker, each square = 12'. Let me know what you think. The track is inspired by supermoto racing. It is half dirt and half paved. I plan to put a couple table tops in the turns and I am wondering if this would be cool on the paved part of the track.

Hi again, I am trying to kill the grass on my track. I have used weed killer to kill it all, but the grass is just yellow.. should I just get a spade to it?
ps. I will get some of the corrugated pipe when I get my car working and can afford it...!

Yes, the grass is probably dead and needs to be spaded and/or raked out.
BTW, since you used weed killer, be sure to keep the track wet while you are driving it... you don't want to inhale dust kicked up by your R/Cs that has weed killer in it.

I'll have a go with a rake today - I had a good go at ripping it up with my sit on lawn mower (that I delimited!)
I will make sure I wet it first, but knowing the weather at the moment I won't need to!

www.easy-rc.com is a site that has one of those lap counting systems that you use to press buttons to monitor the lap times.
the site is down right now but will be relaunched soon so they say. You can download the software once it comes back up then you have the software to put on a laptop.
Does this still exist - I can't find it on the website... It would be really useful!
Thanks!

I know this is a old post, but I happen to have that easy-rc6 program still around. It has been extremely useful for me at times.
But unfortunately the last time I seen that program available for download was in 2002. I did a little digging and found the easy-rc.com website archived at http://web.archive.org.
I do not know what kind of trouble I could get into by providing the link to the program, so I'll just point you the way instead.
Go to the web.archive website
Place the website URL into the search
Search the 2002 archives
I did a check and yes the program itself has been archived. The last version was easy-rc6.exe, and it can be downloaded from the archives.
enjoy... :D
