Just returned from a out of state trip, so been away.
I want to get into backyard fliers. I've decided on Tiger Moth.
I've been emailing with Horizon Hobby (I've apprecated their service so far)
I want to get the plane kit.
And I also need a TX (4 channel) I want one that I can use with the FMS RC flight simulator. The maker of the cables for FMS recommended the HiTec Flash 4 system X (SXG) 174.95
This is because it interfaces to FMS and is a good starter 4 channel (low end computer radio) so sounds good to me.
The only problem, the people at Horizon say it comes with a Micro 555 5 channel receiver and 2-HS81 "micro servos"
I've read that the Tiger Moth recommends the GWS "SUB MICRO" servo/receiver system. Is SUB MICRO smaller than MICRO?
I don't know if Horizon is just trying to make the sale or is actually recommending what would be best for the Tiger moth and long flights.
Are these plane "Innerds" a good choice? I only need 2 servos correct? (The ESC is the 3rd channel?)
The Flash 4 also says this...
_______
Includes: Micro “555” 5 Channel Micro Receiver, 2 HS-81 Micro Servos, 600 mah. Transmitter and 270 mah. Receiver NiCads, Charger, Switch harness with Charge Jack and Frequency Flags
_______
What is "600mah" ? and Transmitter and "270 mah" ???????
I assume batteries? are these for the TX and RX? would they be nicad or the other type? (I prefer the other type)
I'd like long slow flights.
Horizon also recommended a speed control (only referred to me as $35.96) not sure what size of kind. They show two at this price, one is a Ikarus the other is a 9.6v 16a speed control w/BEC auto? (from Super Flying Model)
I'd sure hate to get the wrong stuff - is anyone would give me the red, yellow or green light on this stuff I'd surely appreciate it.
I'm ONLY interested in small, electric backyard/indoor RC flying.
I don't see me ever going to larger, glow fuel models again.
eagerly awaiting some advice before ordering.

P.S.
What else would I need? Does a charger/battery come with the Flash 4?
How do I quick charge the battery in the Tiger Moth? So I can get back in the air quickly. I want to order everything I need. So if I need a quick charger. Please give me a recommendation as to which one. (I'd like to do Nicad and Nimah types 6-7 cells.

Hi guys.
Micro servos are lager then the sub-micro servos.
Most Transmitters come with micro or standard servos.
You nee Sub-micro servos for the TM. I have all 3 sizes because I made
The mistake buying a TX with Micro servos, thinking they would work.
So pick any radio you want (Except AM) GWS receiver only works on FM ch.
The GWS flightpack comes with 2 sub servos, a battery, a Receiver (No crystal) and a
Electronic speed control.
Good luck!

Tower doesn't seem to have a email address to ask questions.
(I don't feel that's good support)
They are cheaper, but I'll pay more for a email response.
I've been all through Horizon and Tower and can't find any decent 4 channel TX radio that doesn't come with servos.
I want sub-micros - not micro servos that I can't use.
Where can I get a radio like the Flash 4 without RZ/servos
or with sub-micro RX and servos.

GWS sells the TX without the servos.
I think if you can aford it go with one that does come with servos. you may want it later. If you fo to a 400 size motor then the micro servos are ok. after you get evertying you can get a 400 size motor and a 15 amp electronic speed control and build a new plane. control both planes with one TX. While your flying one charge the other!
Thats my plan!

http://www.hobbyhorse.com/ has a flash5x transmitter and charger only for $110.
That with a GWS flight pack will take you a long way. The battery from the flight pack may not be ideal for the tiger moth (6*270 nicad, I believe).
I think that 8*110 NiMH or 8*280 NiMH would be better. I will also try the Lithium packs that I got (2 packs with charger for $45). Each pack flies my litestick for almost a half hour. The charger for this would not be useable for other packs, but it sure would make a good setup for someone that will likely only fly these small planes for a while. If you are going with the NiMH packs, you will need a good charger that can handle NiMH packs. I use an Astro Flite 110D (little over $100). There may be some newer solutions that work better or have more features. I have not kept up on chargers as I have one that fits my needs.

What is a "buddy box"?

Another question!
Vince saved the day by giving me a place that will sell me a TX radio by itself.
Will then probably get flight pack from GWS.
(and Tiger Moth)
I was reading the BYF magainze review again and it says...
NEEDS 3 channel radio (ok, Elevator, rudder and ESC)
Then it says
NEEDS 4 channel Receiver ??? why is this?
what is the 4th channel for on the receiver?
If I get a 4 channel radio, should I then get a 5 channel receiver?

Hi Ron,
A buddy box is a second, compatible transmitter that you hook up to the transmitter that a training pilot holds. You use a buddy cord to connect the two, and this carries the buddy box input to the trainer transmitter. You, the student, hold the buddy box. The receiver in the plane is on the same channel as the trainer transmitter. The trainer pilot launches the plane and gets it to altitude (3 mistakes high). The trainer pilot then pushes the buddy switch on his transmitter, and while that button is pushed, the student pilot has control of the plane. Any time that the plane is in danger, the trainer pilot releases the buddy switch, and resumes control of the plane. This is the typical way that clubs teach beginner pilots. It is so very effective. I have helped 6 newbies this way. To have the student make a mistake, have the experienced pilot right there to comment on it, and even recreate the situation so the student can get out of trouble the right way. This method of teaching gives the best chance of getting through the learning curve.
The TM only needs 3 channels. But unless you go with the Focus single stick 3 channel systems, of some really expensive, really light systems, you are going to use a 4 channed receiver (or more).
I have to admit that I do not have any first hand experience with the TM, other than I have read the manual on mine about a dozen times. I have to clear off some of the items on my honey-do list before I am allowed to start it.
Oh, a few comments on the flash 5x radio. It is an inexpensive computer radio that stores 5 models configurations in memory. It will let you do several basic mixing functions so that you will not need an onboard mixer for a plane with elevons or a v-tail. But I do wnat to warn you that the programming is somewhat of a bear. Without the manual, I can not get through most of the menu structure to change the settings. It does work well, and I do recommend this transmitter a lot. But I did want to warn you that it will take some reading, and more reading before you will feel confident changing the configurations.

Thanks for the tips and heads up - I'm a techy type person, so programming of all kinds comes easily. (knock on wood)
I love to learn - so reading and following the manual will be fun for me.
I still don't quite understand the TM needing a 3 channel TX and a 4 channel RX (what does the extra channel in RX get used for?)
I was planning on the Flash 4 - but was just told (thank god for all the great help I've gotten online) that the 4 doesn't have the buddy port and the "5" does. So I'm gonna go for the Flash 5.
I'm primarily interested in getting the cable to interface this to one of my computers to use FMS. (works well with joystick, but I'm sure you can't beat using the dual sticks on the TX for learning this way.
The place you suggested has Flash 5 for about 100.00 bucks.
that with a GWS flight pack (not sure which one yet for the Tiger Moth) and I should be ready to go.
(do crystals come with TX radios like the Flash 5 or are these always sold seperately?)
Other than TM kit, Flash5 and GWS flight pack (and possibly crystal) what else would be required?
Whats needed to build the kit? (tape? glue? any thing extra?)
I'm pretty sure you can get that flash 4 with the feather receiver and sub-micro servos (hs-55?).

You can get the HITEC LASER 4 with with feather receiver and two sub micro servos. That is what I have. Also has a trainer Jack, and rechargible Tx and Rx batteries. Good deal Tower has on backorder for $119 US. I got mine for $199 Cdn at
Greathobbies.com
The radio has Channel 1+2 ATV, and built in V-Tail and Elevon mixing.
good luck
