Got your mail vsnakebytev - well done for trying to resurrect the threads..........I'd agree that not getting a mail notification when a new post is made has contributed to my input. I used to click the link immediately when the mail arrived, but now only visit this site a couple of times a week usually to find nothing much new.
Thanks for the info on the slicks too, we'll keep our eye on them. They are not legal for our club racing at the moment, but it's likely that some of us may test with them at some point. We need dry weather for them too, and the british climate isn't reliable in that direction !!! The other reason for my lack of input is the time I have to put in preparing two EVO's for our championship and keeping the website at: www.xtrracers.co.uk updated. If you haven't visited it lately, take a quick peek, if only for the picture of the NazPak'd cars on the homepage.
I'll try and get some of the "XTRracers" posting here as well.
Keep the speed guys........

XTR21 Hey your welcome for the E-mail... I was wonderin why I havent seen you on here in a while... It's good to see your back! Yes thats right tell everyone that it's back, and give this thread a jump start! :D Hey well let me know about the slicks...

Hey I will be wanting a chassis prolly around next month... so get one warm and ready for me...

I am going to bring my Schuie 3E into skewl on Friday prolly.... I wanna show it off and also I want to drive it in our nice and smooth brand new tarmac parking lot!:D and then when I want off road I have a foot ball/ lacross field right next to me! I love drivin it around and distracting the jocks! It's funny when they stare at the car then get hit by the ball or get creamed by someone tackling them:p I know I am easily amused... I want to get myself a nice body though...! hmmmmm we'll see what my airbrush can do, or what my wallet can

My exhaust seal has been damaged and I'l loath to pay Schumacher for the manifold just so I can get a small piece of rubber with it. Has anyone got any solutions to solving this?

I've tried a GS Racing .21 exhaust seal that I was told would fit by DMS Racing, only it didn't...even after being cut to pieces with a knife, so no refund there.

I have had silicon sealant recommended as well. Has anyone tried it and what results?

I suggest you phone Schumacher's Customer Services and tell them how ridiculous it is to have to buy a complete manifold when all you need is a small rubber seal. They do have a strange way of packaging items - I have loads of steering and hub parts left collected from them being packaged with other parts.
Schumacher are usually quite responsive to comments like this, and the least I would expect is for them to send you a seal seperately.........whether or not you have to pay for it remains to be seen. Perhaps you'll be the reason that they may decide to sell a seal pack in future !!!!

P.S.
Just sent off my entry for the Schumacher Nitro BTCC at Brooklands (Big 6). Will be taking the EVO down as well (although they won't let me race it) in case anyone fancies popping along for a look.

Is anyone here going to Eastnor Model & Hobbies Spectacular 2003, http://www.traplet.com/eastnor?

I love just down the road, so guess I'll pull my finger out and pop down. Might even see if I can enter my XTR or EK4 in something.

(Wonder if there is a prize for truck that leaves the most bits on the track?)

I have narrowed down my choices to this Schumacher or a Nitro Rustler.

Does anyone have experience with both? I know the Schumacher has the lead in mph, but what about jumping? Do I understand that the Schumacher isn't much of a jumper? How about overall durability?

Thanks bunches.

Hope some1 can offer some advice guys.

Here's my situation:, ive just brought my 3e out of action after the long winter. Got all the car started up as normal, no probs there.. car idles well, everything running fine. Let it warm up(idle'd on one tank), then let it go.. first gear goes ok.. only when it tries to shift to 2nd.. i hear like a clunking sound, as if it wants to go, but doesnt.. then the car stalls to a halt.

The car was having absolutely no problems whatsoever when i packed up before winter.

Im a newbie, so any suggestions/ideas would be much appreciated..
Thanks.

Well, if the sincerity of my interest was ever at question, let it be known that since my above post, I have read every one of the currently 51 pages & 1257 posts! Whew!

After all that, I read this (from back around page 48)

What's up with that? I want an off road truck! I've noticed that many of you are interested in on road. Between the transmission & the shocks it sounds like the Desert Storm is not ideally suited for off-road. So I am left to wonder, should I be looking elsewhere? Is this not the truck for me? Did I read all this in vain?

Moreover is anyone reading this thread any longer?

Hi guys ive been reading these forums for a while now, and decided to register, I have also got a 21 xtr which I have had for about a year, I am looking into buying hop ups for it, are the alloy wishbones worth upgraded to ? I have the turnbuckle adjuster set, what else is worth buying for it ? Also can most bodies be made to fit with abit of cutting ? any help is appreciated guys

I would like to see these forums get back going again :) I'll post some pics of my truck when I can get hold of a camera:D

I am not sure if Schumacher still sell the single speed Xtr, why not try and buy a second hand one or see if any model shops have them in as old stock or something :) just an idea if you were hooked on gettin an xtr

I e-mailed Schumacher asking whether the 3-speed could be run off road. They were very prompt replying.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It has shown to be fine off-road, just not recommended for grass or
where the drive train bogs down.

Thanks for replying, Jones. Sounds like a 1-speed might be the ticket. Do you jump yours? How's it take that?

yeah i have jumped it and it seems to cope ok, i have changed the stock turnbuckles as i snapped the front ones on one side and smashed up a shock crashin into a brick at bout 40mph :D im thinkin of gettin rid of the xtr and buyin an FG marder but i may keep it yet i duno :)

Can anyone shed any light on this issue? Not too long ago my brother bought a car from someone on here (nearly new XTR). At first the performance of the car was great (a fraction quicker than my XT).

Now however the car performs really badly and literally sounds bogged down when driving it. A lot of different needle/carb settings have been tried, is the piston/liner knackered?

Seems odd as mine was secondhand when I bought it and I have run quite a bit of fuel through it since (about a gallon) and its been strong as anything...

not been on here in ages...just come back from uni so thinking of bringing the XTR out of hibernation...needs a few repairs though, smashed up the front bumper section and needs a new one way clutch for the e-start - slipping loads - hard to spin with the eleccy drill!!!

Hi guys ive been reading these forums for a while now, and decided to register, I have also got a 21 xtr which I have had for about a year, I am looking into buying hop ups for it, are the alloy wishbones worth upgraded to ? don't bother with the alloy wishbones unless you have a habit of breaking the stock plastic jobbies...you could get the spring set - has about 5 different for front and rear - stiffer springs means less dive and squat under acceleration and braking, also makes the car corner flatter but makes the handling more aggressive as in it will spin easier...

as for other upgrades, try rose jointing the turnbuckles (replacing the 'cup' ends with the ring ones like on the shocks)...fitting more powerfull servo's (i got a £70 futaba steering but it's overkill)...alloy shocks(look cool), a CVEC exhaust (top buy, i got an 1/8 scale one - sounds ace makes car faster)...i also drilled holes in my brake disk (cross drilled) to stop overheating....get a fail safe to prevent run-aways and loss of control at low battery voltage.

my car here....

Sorry for the delay - I'm working on aluminium versions after the EVO spec XTR demonstrated it's ability to shear the rear ones under race stress !!
Unfortunately, the race season for us "XTR Racers" has distracted me from sorting it out - but I will get them organised because I want to run a set and get some decent wheels on my EVO !!
Will let you guys know as soon as I have news..........

it's a failsafe mounted on the side of the reciever, plugs in between the reciever and throttle/brake servo.....very useful always works for me...

got a temp gauge too mounted on the rear battery cover...very handy

the temp gauge is by Venom whilst the failsafe is a GWS FS1(from LHS) and cost about £15 - about £15 cheaper than the venom one which does exactly the same...

worth gettin a failsafe, gives extra peace of mind - would be so bad wrecking a £250 car due to a low battery.

Yes, all of the original running gear bolts straight onto the EVO chassis. I wouldn't waste your money on the alloy wishbones though, they simply transfer the stress to the pivot blocks, and if you upgrade the pivot blocks to alloy versions, you end up shearing the mounting screws............the good thing about the plastic wishbones and surrounding parts is that they absorb a lot of the impact and don't cost a lot to replace. I wouldn't bother with any of the alloy parts - in fact, I have a spare set of alloy rear wishbones that came with a car I bought if anyone is interested in making me a sensible offer for them.

On the subject of the EVO'd cars - we are take the "xtrracers" up to Rockingham on August 24th (if we can get our act together this time !!) to race on their new permanent track. If it's confirmed, why not come along and see what you think of the ultimate tarmac spec XTR's...............

i might look in to getting an xtr sometime when i get some more cash, you can mount different bodies on them other than just the nascar style body though ? also form looking at pics of them you can run dual fuel tanks like the lotus big 6 ? what are the other advantages of the EVO on road conversion apart form keeping the front end down and I presume better handling ? also what are colour are the stiffest springs is it the blue or black ones ?

cheers guys

Hi,

Nearly finished running in my XR-T3E, but I have a small problem... it stalls =/ It stalls when I fill the car back up after a run (every time) so I am wondering if the engine is flooding when its standing still? I know if I get the car back up on the blocks, start it up and rev it a bit it goes ok until I either fill it up or let it run out of fuel... would running the car leaner fix this problem or should I just lift the rear up and rev the engine a bit before I let it go again after a refill?

Cheers,

Alex

Jones:
You can fit any 1/8th scale body to an EVO chassis - our NazPak shell is designed for racing in our series. All cars run the same shell, and they are made to be 1.5mm thick so they last the whole season !!! The difference in on-road handling that an EVO chassis gives just has to be seen to be believed - you don't get the constant lifting of the front wheels and our modification to the rear toe in means that the cornerin speeds are significantly higher. Yes, you can run twin tanks, but not if you choose to run a Fusion exhaust manifold (the silencer gets in the way of the 2nd tank) Most of us run a single Thunder Tiger EK4 tank now, mainly because the standard XTR tanks are crap.Black springs are stiffer than Blues. If you really fancy an EVO why not try and get down to one of our race meets at Crawley to have a closer look ?

Sandman:
You don't say whether you are actually running the car or just sitting it on blocks to run in, although I suspect that you are correct in assuming that its flooding. The factory settings are quite rich for the purpose of running in and thats whats causing the stalling. As you put more tanks through it (I'd recommend at least 6 for the run in) you can lean it out. Try screwing the low speed in 1/8 of a turn to see if that improves the idle. I run my EVO with the low speed at 6 and 3/4 turns out, and the high speed between 1 and 3/4, and 2 turns out dependant on the weather. One important thing, overheating is what kills these engines, don't be tempted to run lean if the weather is hot. You can get the large cylinder head (as fitted to the Big 6) to combat this, but you still need to be a bit sensible and watch the temp.
I run 10% Blue Thunder fuel (we've tried everything else and BT is the best, believe me) but, you can run 20% with no problem - just expect a slightly shorter engine life.
Good luck with your XTR, and when you get fed up with off road, and wheelies, come and get the EVO conversion and really tear up the tarmac.

Hi,

Sorry, for being too vague. I start the car up on blocks - more for safety tbh so it doesn't suddenly shoot off - I also start it with a bit of throttle as I find this helps it start quicker.

Once started on the blocks and revved a little to check that its giving out some smoke, I run the car normally - usually on grass =) However, when it comes to refuel when running, it stalls when I apply any throttle - this is after about 1min idling max.

I have tried making it a little leaner, but I don't want to go OTT with it as I am more interested in the engine lasting than uber performance. I think all in all, I have run about 10 tanks through the engine (using Blue Thunder first run fuel) and I intend to get it retuned and checked over before carrying on using Blue Thunder 10%. I can't wait to get some alu bits for it - I was a little scared I had broken summit when I had a fight with a kerb and a steering arm popped off - luckily thats all it had done.

First thing however is a bleedin HUGE fuel tank =) Its a pity someone doesn't make a custom one for this car that fills alot of the spare space on the chassis...

Thanks for your help,

Alex

xtr21
06-20-2003, 05:46 AM
Try the T-Maxx fuel tank, they seem to work well and are pretty large. Unfortunately, the std chassis doesn't have a great deal of room for a bigger tank, so choice is limited. You could also investigate the possibility of using tanks from some of the big engined monster trucks - they have huge tanks !!
And, my advice is not to waste your money on the alloy bits - they just transfer the stress to other parts - you'll still be breaking something !! The only alloy part that would be worthwhile is rear hubs, but Schumacher don't make them yet !!
Good luck.........

sandman_2ooo
06-21-2003, 11:51 AM
Just as a quick follow up, I found the problem with the stalling to be as a result of the engine losing pressure when I open the fuel tank to refill - hence, when I put some gas on after the fill, it will probably stall =/

Solution: rev during refill periodically.

Thanks for all your help - I am still looking for a big fuel tank... does the TMaxx tank require me to drill new holes in the chassis of my car and will this invalidate any warranty? Might sound like a silly question, but one can always hope that life might be simple =]

In hind sight, you would have thought that Schumacher would have released a tank that was taller and a tad bit wider (or maybe "specially" made) for this car - there is almost enough room to make it twice as tall as usual! I am not sure how much this would effect handling, but the servo is on the other side of the car so surely they could come up with something?

Cheers,

Alex

We have tried 3 different carbs (including mine)

different fuel tank, and he has also renewed the piston and liner (broken in correctly)

any ideas where to go from here bar a new engine?

I will be getting a set of Alloy Wish bones this week end so I will be able to tell you what I think on them..... If mine are fine you may want to consider sending them back to schumacher for a better pair. I will let you know by Monday if they come in.

I have a question about the CVEC pipe.... I tried to install mine and it is too fat and short for along the bottom.... it rubs on the fly wheel and it still wont fit onto the header.... its too short. I then tried to install it behind the engine and found it will rub on the body and body posts...... What can I do? I have the pipe for the .21. Some one please help me!

I was wondering if someone would know the most apt solution to the following:

On my Storm XTR-3e, The e-start is leaking small amounts of black fuel/oil.
Also, it will not change gear (I have stripped the gears off and they seem fine)

The only change I made immediately prior to this problem was to install an inline fuel filter, but I didnt think that this could be the cause.

russboy69

I have had the same problem with the E-start and one of my friends is also having this trouble, so its not a one off.

My one started to leak soon after it was run in from new, however it seems to have stopped by itself.
but my friends says his is leaking quite a lot and he has noticed a drop in engine power.

Seems like all of a sudden this is becoming a common problem. I wonder whether Schumacher had a bad batch of E-Starts. One of the guys who races with us at XTRracers had problems with his last Sunday and ended up refitting the pull start !! It definately affects the performance, with idling problems being the first symptoms. If the leak is from around the casing you simply fit a new ribber seal (G508X) which should be reasonably cheap and simple, the real problem is if the leak is from centre of the E-Start assembly - I can't see anything other than a complete replacement fixing that. Has anyone tried to get the hex screw undone to replace it !! Damn, that thing gets tight !! I plan to renew the rubber seals during my winter engine rebuild but won't be happy if I have to get a whole new E-Start if it starts leaking from the centre. Good luck guys - keep it nailed !!!

I removed my e-start, cleaned it up and re-fitted and it has stopped leaking. That was a little to easy for my liking. Hense my main problem still exists:

My car does not want to change gear. I have noticed now that the clutch bell has gone blue rather than the dull grey it usually is. Does this mean my clutch is fried? not even sure if it can fry....

If my clutch is fried would that stop the higher revs being transferred, hense no gear changes? What colour should the clutch shoes be after a bit of use?

I will have to get some pictures up, multiple mods keep meaning my xtr is in pieces. The engine mount and alloy steering arm is next I think. This depends it I can suss out how to beef up my purple anodised cougar chassis so the suspension arms dont rip some large holes in it.

Thanks
MAM

Do any of you think I should get a Desert Storm? The belt drive seems kinda odd. Has anyone had problems with it? Thanks to those that respond.

i woz just wondering how long running time you get on 1 tank of fuel and if there is any ways of getting the car to run for longer on a single tank.
i think my xtr is gr8 but i seem 2 have about 2 minutes running time (with the standard tank)
I dunno wether there is sumthing wrong, if its normal, or if im just having so much fum the time passes too quickly :D

also how long does it take every1 to prime there engine (pullstart)?

cheers for any answers

I have not got the car that this forum is about, but am considering both the engine and gearbox with 3spd for a transplant into an old Losi XXT chassis that I have. Does anyone know someone who has done something similar to this. It previously had an old tamiya nitro trucks drivetrain but I cant get gears for it anymore.

If somebody could please post a few pics of the drivetrain area and stuff like that I would be gratefull.

Thanx for any help or advice

PS i know whats involved so please no "its too hard dude" comments.

ton of speed, however, not track raceable. !-1/10 truck with .21 and 3 speed. talk about hookup nightmare. street- slicks diff story thou --screams.
My problem and part of why I dont use it much anymore is getting parts. Have to order them and then in addition to paying full part price I have to pay shipping. Not enough dealers sell em and as you all know dealers can get u reduced costs and no shipping.

Hi ALL.

I just bought a XTR secondhand and I must say its fantastic!!!!

WOW what a speed.

Its an 21 XTR not a 3e. Its running on 30% Nitro and has a 3 speed gearbox. Ive moved the battery to the front to help reduce wheelies and reversed the exhaust as it kept fouling the right rear tyre.

Now on to my problem, Ive run 4 tanks through it in the last 2 days! and broken : -

Front right tie rod (now fixed)

Rear wishbone bracket (fixed)

Today I boke the rear hub carrier (not fixed)

When i bought the car it came with loads of spares including a rear hub carrier, anyway I fitted the spare one only to find that it had a slightly bigger diameter than the original ones causing the bearings to not fit tight (too much play in the assembly when fitted back to gether)

Now, U2327 is the part number in the manuel and is this correct because im thinking that thayt is the part i have but it is slightly the wrong diameter!

Does everybody else break there XTR as regulaly as me or am I crap?

What hop ups are available to strengthen the car?

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers FIL

I'm looking for a conversion set so it will be possible to mount hex type wheels..

Have seen it done in this thread, don't remember who posted the picture though.

Any help is much appreciated.

I wonder if I can wake up this thread!! I bought one of these awhile back and I am having trouble finding the right parts for it. I bought it with a broken transmission case. It came with a parts explosion page so I ordered the part number and it was the wrong one. A little wider and larger bearing holes. I went to their website and they show that number as well as two others. My understanding is that they made the 21XT single speed, 21XTR 2speed, and 21XTR 3speed. Please correct me if I am wrong. I have the 21XT Desert Storm with single speed trans. The other part numbers shown on the website linked to these trucks have other models names next to the description. Anyone know about this or been thru it?

There were 3 different models of this truck, but when it comes to the transmission the only difference was the upper layshaft

thanks Adam, thats actually where the problem lies. the bearing holes for the top shaft are larger and spaced a bit further apart keeping me from simply replacing the bearings with larger ones. I guess Ill just have to call them and talk to someone. The website Im sure has what I need but the descriptions are too random for me to know.
