Hi all. I need some help. I'm new to RC and am torn between the Rustler or the Losi XXX-NT Sport RTR w/XR2i. What are your thoughts? (Refer to my thread in the general discussion titled "Need friendly Advice" for background info. Thanks!

I have a Rustler 2.5 with some minor upgrades.......It's a very user friendly truck, fast as a Jack Rabbit, very easy to get parts for and easy to repair.....Unless you are planning to get into some very serious racing,it's all you will ever need for personel fun.......Just make sure you have lots of room, because a Rustler can eat up alot of ground...FAST! Thanks for the reply. Yeah, the speed would be awesome. It's hard to pass up stormer hobbies deal though. They have a Losi xxx-nt sport rtr for $240. Comes with a great radio too. What do you think?

The LOsi truck might be cheaper at first, but if you look into the parts availablility and tech support.......Nobody and I mean nobody beats TRAXXAS.

Sorry but you are incorrect. There are no problems with parts availability on the losi, in fact it is raced...no racer would buy a truck that had probs getting parts. As far as tech support, I have spoken to lead Losi engineers about fine tuning the truck and I have emailed Adam Drake directly and received a personal answer back. How much better can it get  I do agree that Traxxas has good tech support as well but the Losi truck is a race winning design. It comes with a digital radio with three model memory, sub-trim and epa. The Rusty comes with a cheap feeling basic radio. Again, I have both and the Losi is more suitable out of the box for a beginner...IMHO. That said...the Rusty 2.5 is a blast to bash!

We're all entitled to our own opinions, and with that being said, I'd recommend the Traxxas Rustler. :)

hey is there any way to make the nitro rustler wider ... or handle in any way ... it doesn't handly anything like my rc10gt ... i just picked this thing up and all it wants to do is roll over even with soft shocks

I think fastlane on ebay makes wider billet a-arms.

Well it’s my first RC video. Running a Traxxas Nitro Rustler, OFNA Picco .26 MAX, Gladiators & Losi tires. The video was shot in my front yard. I used my digital camera to take it so it has no audio & the camera was fixed upon a tripod. In this I was using my helicopter radio to try and control the truck because my left hand is in a cast & I can’t hold the pistol grip radio. Still a bit hard to drive it this way. But at least now I can somewhat control throttle & brakes by pushing on the stick. The heli radio sys uses an 8 cell 9.6v receiver battery pack witch is fairly heavy. And it’s located under the front shock tower on the truck. This helped my steering even better than the stock radio with the 4 AAA cell pack I use up front. Well it helps when the tires are not in the air anyways lol. Let me know what you think for a first time vid.
Engine in this video isn’t tuned for the best performance. I was just keeping it running rich & cool today. About 225 deg. This tuning for cool temps & less performance also helps me keep it on the ground.

Sick truck...can't imagine why! Mine won't keep from flipping on it's lid with the 2.5. Good job fitting it in though.
PS You will really piss off a guy flying his $1500 copter if you are using that air freq radio for your land ride and knock him outta the sky. Be careful!

It’s all good. I drive it mainly here at home & also fly the helicopter here at home. I live out in the country it’s nice, quiet & peaceful. Unfortunately no other people to enjoy RC's with locally. I have to drive to someone's house to bash with.
And your right it does drink the fuel pretty quickly as compared to the .15 it had. But I don’t drive it but a couple of tanks then I'm done. It gets boring here by myself running around the yard or up & down the road. I have enough land I might get bored enough and try to make a track this summer for something more interesting.
Hi, I´m from Argentina and I have a nitro rustler with the pro .15, I´ve changed the spur gear for one of 66T, with this one I would have more speed????

Welcome here!!
What is the stock size spur on the ole .15 Rusty?
Quinton
06-30-2005, 09:35 PM
You will notice a little difference. You would notice more if you change the CB but I think it would make your bottom end way too weak.
I would go to traxxas.com forums for more info and advice on your rusty.

06-30-2005, 09:45 PM
Stock spur size on a pro rusty is 72t. I know that by adding more teeth to the spur you get more speed. And by taking more teeth away on the clutch bell, you get better acceleration. But im not sure when you take away teeth from the spur gear, probly just get alittle better acceleration.

basically your goin to want the OS .18 its what i put in mine and its going to be the closest thing to a drop-in. the only mods you have to do are a lil grinding on the motor mount, on the front side of the trans box and a new exhaust..... other than that your done.

dcshoelover
01-29-2006, 07:14 AM
The Traxxas "2.5" with the simpe conversion kit would be ur best option. Otherwise there's the megatech 16, the fantom 15, os 15's. Just make sure the crankshafts are the same style.

my rustler is pretty stock but once i get used to it i'm going to put about 500-600 dollars in parts to race it.

That is caused by runing your sliper clutch too tight. You can lose it a little bit, but be careful not to loosen it too much or you will melt it. Another option is to replace the axles with MIP CVD's like I did in my rusty.

The conversion kit he's talking about is the one to convert the older style rustler chassis into the newer style rustler one for the 2.5. I can't remember how much it was but I think it was in the 50 - 70 dollar range.
I don't see why the os cvr wouldn't fit. As long as its mountng holes are similar to the 2.5 you're good.

Yea thanks for the info i should have thought of that. any one got a used set of mip cvds or know where to get them cheap. btw those rpm wide plasic bumpers are the bomb highly recommended still broke the bumper but saved my a arms definatly getting another.
Still looking for a larger cooling head and i have a spare .15 engine block. a little marred in the bottom end but will not affect performance any resonable offers or trades will be deeply considered.

RCBoyz on ebay. You can get your conversion kit there, which isn't that expensive. And your MIP cvd's. And probly discover a whole ton of cool hop-ups and bodys and stickers. Make sure you search SIC decals from them. Definitely the coolest decals ever. Also, just do a search for t-maxx cooling heads as these are easier to find and since they are the same engine will work. Just make sure it's for the pro.15 and the newer "2.5".

Actualy i had a .15 truck and i wanted a 2.5R, the kit is direct from traxxas at $25 plus $5 for S/H, or im sure they are on EBAY or RCBOYS.com, and if you have a .15 rustler.. i highly recomend when your engine is geting old, that you upgrade to the 2.5R or the NEW 3.3! I am going to get a 3.3 as soon as my local hobby shop has one in stock.... il let you know how it is. Also to cut down on the huge power of the 2.5R, i put a 22 tooth clutch bell on it, more top speed less low end, which is still plenty!!!! Its AMAZING!!!

Hey everyone, i just got a OS .18 CV-RX (s) today and it doesnt exactly slide right into my rusty, i have the older one that has the Pro 15. The motor mounts seem to be to small, do i just have to grind the sides down a little, im looking for help from someone whos done this. Also is i cut that plastic that goes from the tranny to the top deck will that effect anything, it seems like it will get in the way. Also, what are the right screws to mount the motor to its mounts, my trx only had 2 on it! Thanks for the help, i really could use it!

Well apart from searching this thread with the boards awesome(yeah right) search tools, you probly won't geta response for that particular engine. The best way right now is probly going to be stick 'er in there and see what's in the way and what can stay. Just get your dremel handy, and remember, you can keep taking off as little as you need, but you can't put shavings BACK! Take lots of pics too.

i was bashin and i had alot of flameouts, was this the glowpug, it was pretty old?when itook the plug out ithink imight have dropped 1-2 grains of sand inthe engine i then blew a ton of compressed air in it and shot a bunch of WD-40 in and spun the ez start like 5 times will my engine be Ok? i dont want to take it apart.
Quinton
08-24-2006, 07:19 PM
WELCOME and ouch!
You may want to turn the piston to BDC (bottom dead center), take out the glow plug, take off the air filter and squirt alot of nitro thru it. Then turn it upside down and see if you get anything to come out. Then just turn the flywheel by hand to see if you can "feel" anything in there and/or hopefully you won't hear anything dragging.
Sand = BAD
Dirt = can be squirted out by the above technique - usually without harm.

what abou the glow plug situation. I got a locking plug wire from the LHS, so i was running a cold hpi plug. like i said it was flaming out like every 1-2 minutes. when i got home i put in a new os 8, but havent got a chance to run it yet. maybe tomorrow.

-i just plug/unplug the rx pack before/after i run
-i figure theres less to go wrong that way.
-theres a volt meter in the venom gadge...
looking at it though, there sure arent many options...
i would probably attach it to the side of the front shock tower or in the receiver tray area.

big bore shocks front and back/power line
power line front and rear lower arms/ power line
rear hub cariers/ power line
rear arm cariers/powerline
mip cvd

and the best wheels in my opinion are the dish wheels or flat pan
o ya and the 6 cell nicd batterie pack from traxxas
and thats a cost of $945.0
its possible33

ok if any one wants to put a trx 3.3 on there rustler this wat you need to do.
put some 30k weight diff lube in ur diff and gear box.
and get the resinator tune pipe.
and buy some mip cvds.
why you might ask? cus the half shafts are way to week and they snap with in 5 min
if you buy the mip cvds and dont put 30k weight diff lube in those will snap too.
and i dont know if the tune pipe is must but thats just what i did to car along with this list of mods
trx 3.3
aluminuim shock tower from power line or rpm i forgot
graphite rear shock tower
resenotor tune pipe

purple aluminum front & rear shock towers and front c-hubs
rpm a-arms all around
new wheels and tires
new trx 2.5r

What else do I need? She will be running (playing) on a track we are currently building that will have some nice jumps. We are new to off road and appreciate your help!
custom pink w/ silver flame body

Anyone know where i can get an aluminum rear shock mount to fit it?

01-23-2007, 02:31 AM
i have an older nitro rustler i am rebuilding. the .15 is toasted. what do you guys recommend i replace it with, traxxas or not? i also have a muggy and revo, so id like the rustler to be a solid runner for fun/girlfriend etc.
thanks
dcshoelover
01-23-2007, 08:02 AM
Well the traxxas 2.5 is a good replacement. You could use the engine replacement plan, and would have to get the 2.5 upgrade kit. But it would be worth it. Otherwise I believe there are a few O.S.'s that will work.

Is the rusty a decent truck for someone thats new to nitro, I'm not looking to race, just to bash with my buddies. I'm ready to make an investment but I dont wanna go the wrong way, also looking at an associated rc10gt. Any pros and cons that can help me decide is appreciated..
dcshoelover
01-24-2007, 06:08 PM
The rusty will be best for beginning bashing. The associated is a racer which you will find breaking alot. The rustler is an awesome truck, and if you did decide later on, you could race with it.

Leadfoot: What do you mean you can't stop it? Like there's no brakes? Or you have no radio control? If you have no braking power, you need to grab an allen key, and adjust the little brake stopper farther onto the rod. To test it, squeeze the brake trigger on the radio and try pushing your rustler with your hand. The tires should lock up. Please let us knw more about it.

hey have any one of you guys played with your spur gear or put on a different slipper clutch???????????
dcshoelover
02-27-2007, 09:34 PM
Well it appears that the MIP stinger pipe's have fallen off the face of the earth. I can't imagine that nobody anywhere has any left. I would directly contact MIP. Or you can buy the same style pipe made by Traxxas here... http://cgi.ebay.com/Traxxas-4082-360-degree-tuned-exhaust-Vintage-MIP_W0QQitemZ290088383838QQihZ019QQcategoryZ1200QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Maybe when Traxxas updated to the 2.5 MIP never saw a big enough market for it. But they made the side style pipe for the 2.5 maxx. If I find anything else I'll post it.

hey zues is that the best place for that temp gun ? it looks way too cold to drive your truck ? is there a indoor race track.
zueslilbuddy
03-04-2007, 11:36 AM
It was the best place i could think of to mount the temp guage.
It is too cold I have only run it 2 times this winter and not buying any more fuel untill this spring whan i can hit the dirt.
There are no indoor tracks around here.(man I wish)
I'm mainly a basher but may need to go the the track to show those guys in Greene Maine at the Claybowl race track how to drive this summer. lol
leadfoot113
03-04-2007, 11:48 AM
ya that not cool to have no indoor tracks. put like you I am a basher too but I live in the high desert. about 5 miles from EL Mirage dry lake so there is unlimted places too drive my truck alot of time I just drive it in my back yard or when we go out to the desert races

leadfoot113
03-05-2007, 10:27 PM
hey zues do you tune from it or do you still use the old ear method
psiturbo
03-07-2007, 12:36 AM
The temp Gauge is to mark a reference point. Atmospheric temperatures, type of fuel, glow plug, how close is the fuel line from the head and exhaust, terrain, body ventilation and gearing will affect the needle settings. I use the temp gauge at the beginning just to keep an eye on 200 to 400 F range.
If you are a basher that is most of your run on the throttle then try to keep on opening the High needle as much as you can until the engine starts to choke or drags on the powerband. Me, if it is dragging I will go a few extra passes at WOT to see if it clears and temps go a little higher. Depending on the engine, it may flood or not at idle.
At the present time I have a Nitro Star T-15 that is champ at idle no matter how open I go on the top end. In the contrary, the Traxxas Pro .15 will choke on the low end unless it is very hot for the first few seconds. Once I end running for the day I will close the High Needle about 3/4 to 1 full turn for the next time when the engine is cold. So far it works for me this way. You are right, try to keep an ear on the sound of the engine; stay away from the dreadful erratic idling, the high pitch tone after a long pass at WOT.
This is all my personal opinion and so far it works for me. Number one priority is hearing the engine, second priority is the temperature and always try to see the stream of smoke. I have had terrible days with the Ofna Force .25 and .26, those days are gone.
Note: when installing the MIP temp gauge (stay away from Venom, batteries dont last long) try to position the cable probe (noticeable by an extra layer of heat shrink tubing) 180 degrees or farthest away from the exhaust manifold.
leadfoot113
03-07-2007, 12:50 AM
ya I plan on using the temp gauge as guide to help me on the temp because out here in the dersert it will get out and this is just a nother tool I can use .with that big air filter some time it is hard too tune I am looking for a smaller filter ? I don't like the traxxas stock one too hard to get off and clead that is why I went too a 2 stage filter but the body blockes 3/4 of the filter so back to the books I have to find little smaller one any help would be nice
leadfoot113
03-07-2007, 05:33 PM
ok here is what I have done about my air filter I stayed with the two stage filter and cut slots in the body to lit more air in ! so far it seems to be working fine and it dosn't look to bad either

check out pro line. they have nice truck bodies. anything will fit, it just might not look right. i am looking into a 1/8th scale body, because to me, it looks more realistic. i like the realistic look. look into towerhobbies for size specs.

is it worth it to put the 3.3 in my rusty or should i just get a jato? haha i'm probably asking the wrong people this... i've had my rustler pretty much since the 2.5 came out and i'm not ready to give it up! so 3.3 rustler or jato?
nitrorustler41
06-01-2008, 02:28 PM
well, i know that a properly set up rustler 3.3 will give a jato 3.3 a run for its money.....
get a 24/66 clutchbell, and spur, and you have a 60+ top end, and lots of wheelies

Quick question guys, will the electric rustler/ stampede suspension arms fit the nitro rustler? as i am getting an old Nitro Sport and i know the arms from the nitro Rustler fit the sport but i can get electric rustler arms so i wanna know if they will fit my Nitro sport. So in short will the electric rustler suspension ams fit the nitro sport? or even the Nitro rustler.

btw, what do you think i could get for my truck if iwas to sell it?
it is a 2.5 rustler with about 2 gallons in it. FLM shock towers, FLM bulkheads, FLM skid plate. hardened steel output yokes, hardened steel stub axles, 2 sets of wheels and tires 3 different clutchbells, dual chamber pipe, motorsaver airfilter, TRX powerchargeing system, custom pianted top deck, RPM a-arms, Pro-ball diff, big bore shocks, locking glow plug lead, new custom body, and thats all i can think of right now.
It would be sold with all the accessories. I have alot of money into everything. i kept all my riciepts. how much would you guys offer me?
I am just curious.

I bought a nitro Rustler a few years back and started tinkering with it, next thing i know it has aluminum arms and a knuckles, and a OS.18tm. I think it's alittle much for it, fun anyhow
