What should i look out for when buying one of these?
I found a real bargain on a rs4 3 evo +
Comes with the orig 350Z greddy body, an ashton martin dbr9 and an skylini r34 Z-tune body, 2 sets of rims with tyres and a set of spare tyres.
Glow starter, a box of spares and 2.5l of nitro.
All for just over 100$
The car is rtr exept the pullstart is broken.
Its all stock as far as i know, so where are the weak spots?

Not many weak spots that I can think of, these cars are tanks. The Evo+ is a shorter version of the RS4 Rally. Great platform overall.

Just gotta replace the pullstart tho..
Sorta pricy..

Has anyone ever converted one of these to electric? I've seen a Nitro MT converted and I believe they use the same chassis as the rally car.
Here are a couple shots of mine, after I revived it from the dead, painted up a new body, wheels and tires.

Nice ride Melon, love the Evo Body.
There are a few homebrew conversions out there using bits and pieces of other conversions, and the SC conversion for the MT should work on the SNR as well. I'll be doing one myself! Don't run much nitro anymore.

Thanks everyone!
My goal is to convert the SNR to brushless without modifying the chassis in any way. This might be a far fetched idea, but I'm starting to believe the best approach might be to try and round up another chassis that I can butcher if I want:)
All of this might be moot soon anyway. I'm trying to get my hands on a used Kyosho DRX 1/9 Rally car to convert. Surprisingly, these cars are larger than the SNR.

quickta, HPI makes a set of threaded shocks that fit these cars - about as good as they come. Just measure the length of the stckers eye to eye and you'll know which length to get.
Are those TGX rally tires? I like them, whatever they are.

Hi there pips,
I switched from electric to nitro,
I just recently bought a used RS4 Super Nitro with a bad engine (15FE) the seller states that the engine was working fine from the last run that he had. Car has been sitting in his garage for more than half a year and he couldn't start it now.. I found some manuals on how to rebuild nitro 15 FE engine. I see a list of parts it goes over 60$... Isn't it better to add a few bucks and get a new engine?
What engine will you recommend guys for street racing? I know that if i put more powerful engine such as G3.0 or T3.0 it will ruin a transmission. Is there any mods to SNR tranny that will definitly improve it? I'm kinda new here so forgive me if i posted it in a wrong way. I rly need a good suggestion.

If you in fact have the Rally version running a slipper will help prevent damaging the drive-train. For just running around on the street I doubt it would help much. I'm not sure how much horsepower you can bolt into one of these things. The now vintage O/S 15CV-RX in mine produces 1.2HP and it's been ran like that since day one without any issues.

Are there different models of the .18SS engine? i.e. shaft lengths, etc. Which one do you know would fit a stock Super Rally? I have a tried and true, but whooped and worn-out HPI 15FE. Looking for something to freshen the chassis up.

almost stock, have a RS4Evo 2 speed with option gears bolted in and center universals from my old MT.
The slipper is the same part used by the MT2.

I use a 5 cell flat receiver pack. The pack sticks out the back of the radio tray a little, but doesn't interfere with anything. It's also 6V instead of the normal 4.8V packs. Here is a link to an inexpensive pack to give you an idea what to look for.

I didn't even finish breaking in process. I'm so .. mad.. Is there a way to get a second gear for a stock tranny? I took my car to the nearest rc shop and they told me that i need a second gear or a new tranny w\ 2 gears which is 115 $. Help me out here guys where do i get a second gear for a stock tranny?

2 gears tranny from HPI RS4 evo3 will it fit a stock Rally drivetrain box? what do u think guys ? I have a good deal on it but it comes w/o drivetrain box just a tranny by itself.
Old_School_RC_1
09-27-2010, 07:16 AM
2 gears? You mean a 2-speed? There is no "second gear for the stock tranny," the stock set up is a single gear spool in the center. There's also a slipper center set-up and the two speed that can be installed.
Glad to point you in the right direction, just not sure what you are looking for. The gears for the above 3 options are different, so want to make sure you do not get steered wrong.
Pic of your tranny set-up would be helpful if none of this makes sense.
...and yes, the Evo3 2-speed will fit, though you'll need to change the gearing a bit to accomodate the taller super sized tires.

Mods so far (that I can remember):
Heaver duty silver diff cups and shaft drive cups
Soft diff springs in the front
GMP upper deck
Some kind of Tuned pipe (ebay years ago...)
TI turnbuckles
HPI racing fuel tank
That's all I can think of for now. I also upgraded to the T or G3.0 (which ever one has the normal crank) but that's not pictured. The new body I got is also not pictured. I'm running it with the Flysky gt3b radio and receiver.
So because I haven't read through the entire thread please tell me to search if the answer is here ;-) What I want to know is if anyone has been able to find side guards to bolt to the sides of the chassis? I'm talking about something similar to what is found on the Kyosho landmax?
Anyway I looked around at some other HPI cars for the answer and I found the Trophy. One version of it has side guards that look like they may fit the chassis with drilling for the mounting holes. Dose anyone have any experience with trying something like this?

yes, the rs4 3 2-speed will work, but i recommend the 15/21T clutchbell and 49 and 43 spurs.
NMT, stock 1 speed is 15T and 52/spur so 15/49 is not far gear ratio wise, and that 2nd gear will get you fast high end speed:D

Yeah I got it new probably round the same time I got those rims. I was running it on the Rally back when I had it setup for pavement. It will now go on a dedicated road car.
Dont you know dust is no good for these cars ;-) You need to get out and run them! I still don't get why they stopped producing them as they are a boat load of fun to drive.
So my super nitro RS4 is basically going to be 99% new. I think the only reused parts on it are the front one way diff, the fron upper bulkhead, front belt shaft and the bell crank steering.

MT2 has "beefier" center shafts, you could of converted that to a super nitro rally by switching to super nitro arms, driveshafts, shocks and towers, and wheels and tires.

I made a Super Super Nitro out of my rally, some old MT parts, FW04 parts, and a few RS4 parts. Used RS4 shock towers and touring shocks to make it more of a shaft drive super nitro. (though I've since converted it back to rally)
I've heard that the Mini trophy dogbones fit in the larger diff outdrives and axles of the MT and it makes for a much more sturdy set-up, though I've yet to try it....it's on the list.

MT2 has "beefier" center shafts, you could of converted that to a super nitro rally by switching to super nitro arms, driveshafts, shocks and towers, and wheels and tires.
SerpentCT4S, i am also running my SNR with 18CVRX, get a 2-speed, and use a 15/21t clutchbell and 49/43 spurs...awesome top speed!:D
GOZZZ, that new hpi kit looks great! thanks for the link!
I wanted an original Super Nitro, not a pieced together one.
Just bought a brand new 2 speed off ebay! Do I need anything else for it, or is everything there?
What is the stock gearing on the 2 speed?

I just took out the car for a spin.
The car seems to run good during low RPM's but when I give it more throttle, it just sounds likes its revving. What can be the problem. Is it my clutch? Is my gearing wrong?

Check the clutch certainly, but I think you'd notice that more off the line. Check the setscrews on the diff outputs too. Could be they have worked loose.

The clutch is almost new, ran a few tanks while it was on my MT2. I installed a new clutch bell, a 13T. The clutch looked fine when I switched clutch bells. I did notice some fine black powder. Is that the clutch shoes wearing out and is that normal?
What gearing should I run with the OS motor? Right now, I am using stock gearing, 13/52. Also, what gearing should I run once I get my 2 speed?
I might get the racing clutch from HPI. Any opinions on it? Also, there seems to be two different ones. Can I use either of them?
Going to take some pics now, will post them soon!

That's a beauty! That Impreza scheme is my favorite.
Yes, some dust is normal as it wears in, but a lot of it may indicate lots of slippage. I've run about 5 tanks on the racing clutch with no issues, and not a lot of dust, if any - works fine for me. If you pull the motor, does the drivetrain spin freely? Anything bindng?
Also, it occured to me that you may have a loose flywheel collet on the motor as well as that could also lead to it not accelerating fully....hard to say without it sitting here.
I cannot answer your gear question per-se, you'll have to experiment a bit.
You have a 4:1 ratio now on your single speed which seems ultra low to me, that's lower than MT gearing which is 15/52 (3.46), and taller tires to boot...your car sounds quite undergeared which might also contribute to your lack of top end. Those gears might have worked fine with the old low power HPI .15, but an OS .18 can easily pull a taller gear.
I don't know which 2 speed set you picked up - there's been a few different ones over the years. Using the gears that are commonly available, the RS43/EVO 2speed with stock gears is 2.61/1.95 so it's a bit too tall. Using a set of MT spurs with the same pinion gives you 2.88/2.22 so it's closer, but still might be a bit a little tall. Dropping the pinion to a 15/18 combo yields a 3.46/2.72 ...think that would be an ideal starting spot for a rally car - lots of low end for roosting, and a much higher 2nd gear than when you have now. The OS motor should be able to pull a taller gear if you want a little more top end. Maybe I'll take a peek at mine and see what I'm running. I did all this years ago, I don't remember at all what I ended up with.
Now, if you really want the melt the brain, HPI diffs can take Axial ring and pinion gears or RS43Evo gears. The stock gears are 13/38....you can stuff a 14/36 or possibly even a 13/43 set. though I have yet to try it - may not fit in the diff case. This gives you other options - change both to alter the overall gear ratio, or change one and have an overdrive-underdrive set-up - handy tuning tool for a rally car.
One thing I really like about this chassis is the options you can do. Platform and parts sharing among models is a beautiful thing. Hope all this helps.
No pics of mine. Yet. Been meaning to take some for a while. I'll see what I can do.

When I removed my old clutch bell, there was quite a bit of the black powder. If it was slipping, how can I adjust that? When I had just the roller, the chassis seemed to roll fine. I will pull my motor again today and check again.
So my gearing for the single speed is off. What clutch bell should I bump up to? Maybe an 18?
The 2 speed I picked up is #A912, the one for the Super Nitro/MT2. Whats the stock gearing on that? What gearing should I use along with my OS motor?
Get some pics of yours, would love to see it!
Thanks for all the info and help by the way.

Sounds like the clutch is just worn. Can maybe get some more life out of it with sanding the glazing off the inside of the clutch bell, and off the shoes if it has it. Might be a good idea to invest in a new one regardless.
Why upgrade the single speed clutch bell? you have a 2-speed coming!
Believe stock gearing on the MT set is 13/52 and 16/49. I can't say it this is the right gearing for you or not - gearing is subjective. Some want more punch, some want higher top end. You'll have the same pull off the line with more top end than you do now with those gears. I'd say install it first and see what you think. Can always pick up another clutch bell for more options. A 15/18 CB would probably be a good bet though see where you are first before dropping the cash.
I'll take a look at what I have installed and report back.

I was having trouble dropping the transmission back into the case and then attaching the dogbones. I guess I will have to take off the rear section of the car. Also, the upper deck where the throttle servo is gets in the way also. First, I need a new bearing.
How will this stock 2 speed gearing perform with the OS 18 motor?

no no, no need to remove the entire rear section of the car! i just remove the the top cover of the transmission, insert the front shaft while hovering the trans., then do the same for the rear and it justs drops right in, works every time!
How will this stock 2 speed gearing perform with the OS 18 motor?
fair to good. ...not any faster top end than a one speed. but you be the judge, i've ran every possible gearing combo made for the SNR and 15/21T clutchbell is the best, imho

Hold onto it for now. It controls the shift point - if you find you cannot adjust the 2-speed to your liking, then swap it out. I did the same thing, and the silver worked fine with my .18ss.
