just pulled my 03r TRF off the shelf and cleaned it up
anyway, has anyone tried drifting the TRF 03R ? i've tried 4wd with taped tyres, works hella nice- considering my batts havent seen charge for about 2 years ;) cant believe it all works still
was thinking of taking off the belt or removing front gearbox for RWD only and sticking on a red s13 silvia body
soo...anyone tried RWD drift???

The TA03 has so many aftermarket parts, even though it's getting to be an older chassis. If you were so inclined, you could build a TA03 using only aftermarket parts. My TA03 is about 80-85% upgraded, with about 40% of the car being aftermarket parts and the rest being Tamiya parts.
The best place to go for parts IMHO is eBay. It also helps a great deal to have the part numbers for the things you're looking for. Also, try cross-referrencing part numbers with other chassis - the TA03 shares a few parts with other Tamiya chassis. For example, you can get a ball diff for the TA03 by looking up the ball diff for the Tamiya Manta Ray.
GPM makes good aluminum parts. You can get GPM parts on eBay or at www.asiatees.com. Integy (http://integy.automated-shops.com/) also has good parts.

Pulled out my TAO3-F the other day, whacked on some PVC pipe for tires on some old rims, and went and did some 4wd drifting. Can i say OMFG, i tried the electric tape idea when i first tried to drift, and all it ended up doing was swinging heli's, the PVC makes a HUGE difference, had some nice traction, but not too much so it just sticks to the cement. Now i just need some better batteries to last longer than 10 mins.
Hangin 60-90 degrees sideways is fun. :P

That's a sweet lower deck. Reminds me of the Kose lower deck. I almost bought one of those on eBay a long time ago.

I just completed a trade with an online friend today. I traded him my HPI RS4 Mini plus some spares for 3....count 'em...3...TA03 chassis. The crown jewel of the trade is a rolling David Jun, and the other two are in parts. But, I was also given 2 NIP FRP plate sets to make another F/R and also a FS/RS.
I also got spares galore. I'm talking like several extra ball diffs, one way bearings, carbon gear shafts, aluminum uprights, Pro gear sets, parts trees, sway bars, gear boxes...so far it seems I have enough to make two more Pro chassis.
I'm actually starting to think this was a race car or something. There's way too many spares and hop ups for a just a basher.
WOOHOO!! I'm off to pirate my old TA03 for titanium screws, suspension shafts, and ball ends!! This TA03's gonna rule the local carpet!

You might want to get a pair of Robinson gear conversions for that top end car. HINT HINT (http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?p=1969418#post1969418) ;)
All kidding aside, I've been told by many people that it's a must have if you do racing or if you build an 03 for top speed.
Supposedly, the Robinson set resists heat warpage and wears better than the stock spur gear. But, I have never been able to confirm those claims myself.
Those 03R-TRF's are really nice. I miss mine alot. As for the aluminum parts, in my experience GPM makes nice pieces that fit well. They tend to weigh the car down a bit though, which may hurt your top end project. I've found that in many cases, the stock plastic pieces are lighter. There are some exceptions though. On the other side, for a top speed car you might want some aluminum parts in strategic places for more precise steering control and suspension movement. It's a trade off.
A good way to counterbalance the heavier pieces would be to lighten the car by replacing all the screws and hinge pins to titanium pieces. My 03F shed a couple of ounces when I switched to titanium bits.
Clawhammer
02-24-2006, 07:16 AM
Thx. :)
I have dealt with GPM parts before, im pretty happy with them. I'm going to design a custom chassis for this car, to make it stiffer and to make it easier to carry 2 batteries.
Onikyan: you are right, for a finer tuning of the ratio its ok to change pitch, I'm however afraid that I will strip the finer gears within one run, considering the amount of power used. I'm indeed planning on replacing all the screws with titanium ones. The chassis will however be heavier then the carbon one, but im trying to design it as light as possible. (It also should be a work of art... :D )
Updates to follow. :)

I'm almost done designing the lowerdeck for the ta03. This is not a beauty, but it will give me downforce. (maybe too much....) I will make the upperdeck a piece of art, that's for sure. Have to compensate for that flat shark-like shape. :)
http://www.ewe-squad.com/wpmedia/ta03v0.4.jpg
I scanned the upperdeck/lowerdeck/servodeck for people that want to create their own chassis also, but dont have a good reference: (scanned on 200 dpi.)

- gt1 body: i have one in peaces, it's too low for street racing
- gt2 body: i have one painted and all in the piaa colors, but i don't wanna ruin it and it weighs tons + i can't find a new one
- toyota corolla: the least pretty of all, but i know a shop where i can find one... only it's 50 euro's :s
- peugeot 206: beautifull body, but they don't sell it seperate as far as i know!!! *******!
- hpi saxo: can't find one
- hpi peugeot 106: ugly, can't find one
conclusion: parts of a ta03(R-S) are verry uncommon these days and i can't find **** for it!

Ive been looking around the Toyota mr2 wheelbase is 247mm, 1 cm too long.
Lancia 037 body would fit (exact match.) but I think its made from ABS and not lexan, so also weights a ton, and you dont wan't to ruin that one. :D Best thing to do would be converting it to 25,7 less unique, but a bit more options. I think you only need a longer belt and a frp chassis conversion set.
BTW the Corolla looks ok to me! :)

I have a Novak dually and planning on running two stock motors with tall gearing and whats the max. amount of cells I can safely run on the dually?
Here's some gearing info I found for the TA03F Pro:
TA03F/R Pro & TRF (Internal Ratio = 2.68)
Pinion Gear-/-Gear Ratio
20 tooth............8.44
21 tooth............8.01
22 tooth............7.67
23 tooth............7.34
24 tooth............7.03
25 tooth............6.75
26 tooth............6.49
27 tooth............6.25
28 tooth............6.03
29 tooth............5.82
As for the Dually ESC, I don't know much about it. I think you can run 12 cells on it, since it's designed for twin motor applications. I'm not sure though.
Here's a list of the stuff that I'd recommend if you don't have them already:
-TA03F front gearbox (or TA03R rear gearbox, same difference)
-TA03R FRP (or carbon) upper deck
-spare TA03 Pro gear set (for the new rear gearbox)
-two identical pinions (recommended)
-two 540 motors (I recommend identical motors)
-spare battery holster parts
Replace the stock rear gearbox with the new gearbox, complete with internals. You can ditch the drive belt, since each gearbox has its own powerplant.
If you want better run times, I'd suggest using two batteries instead of just one. The extra weight will also make the car more manageable.
Get the TA03R FRP or carbon upper deck, and replace the TA03F upper deck with it. Then, install the second battery holster in the forward position - you'll see the holes already drilled into the bottom plate. You'll need the TA03R upper deck so you can mount your servo on top of the front battery holster.
Then all you gotta do is set up your pinion gear lash, charge up the batteries, turn it on, and hang on! If you set up the car with a pair of decent motors and a pair of carefully selected pinions, a dual motor TA03 can be quite a handful.

I want to fit a 200mm body, so which wheels should I get that will brauden it to 200mm.
Tamiya wide 2 piece wheels will do it. The wheels have a two way adjustable offset. If you set them to wide they'll fit a 200mm body perfectly.
They're 30mm wide though, so you'll have to use extra wide tires.
Click the pics.

Also, a brand by the name of Speedway Pal makes a set of wheels called Slidemasters. They're most popular among people who are very much into RC drifting (like me :) ). They look great, and they're extra wide. They come in a 8.5mm offset, which I think will work too. The problem with these is that they're very hard to come by. They're usually only available in Japan. But, the bonus of these wheels is that they use standard 26mm wide tires. Here's what they look like:

My cousin just gave me his old TA03R Mobil1NSX. The first thing I did was cange out that horrible stock MSC with an ESC from another Tamiya kit that I never used. :) It's the first TA03 I've had a chance to wrench on, and I've been checking this board out every now and then to see what people have done to theirs but it seems that there haven't been any posts for a couple weeks. :(

I can't wait either. :) too bad I have to work now and then. I don't think tamiya engineers can learn from me, that requires a degree in maths, I failed maths on highschool and have not "mathed" (hehe) ever again.
It's indeed quite expensive, I only use 4 parts from the original kit. (the 2 plastic gearboxes and 2 hollow carbon shafts.)
Here is a small update of what I did last night:

cool dual 19's setup,
so are you gonna run it or not because those allen caps on the bottom, ouch.

Keep in mind, it's not made for cornering, or track driving at all. Just straight forward on a clean road. The allen caps will affect the airstream a little so I don't have to worry about taking off if I hit a little stone. (still has plenty of downforce.)
Dual 19's? If you are referring to the motor setup, dual brushless was and still is the idea :D

Hi Guys,
I have a TA03F shelf queen that I recenlty dusted off and raced a few times. Needless to say, I got bit by the racing bug and bought a TA05. So now I have an almost new TA03 with almost every hop up imaginable (it's basically a Jun edition) and a spare part for everything. Have you guys had any luck selling these on E-bay?

If it was stil in it's box you would have gottan a pritty penny for it but when it's already built you gonna loose alot of value depending for what you whant to sell it :( .
my opinion would be to keep it, fun litle car :p .

Here's my manila drifters video taken last saturday in a driftnic with happy go lucky bunch of guys and gals. Always lighthearted atmosphere. I'm a long time grip fanboy but drifting is entertaining, too. Its a new indoor track that opened so I had to try it out. Very tight, technical for grip racing.

Hey everyone. I have an old TA03-R TRF that I'd like to get running. My only problem: I can't get the batteries into it. This thing was designed when 2000mah was high capacity for a battery, and I cannot, for the life of me, get the slightly larger 3600mah batts I have into the batt. holder on the chassis. How do you guys fit the newer, higher capacity cells into this car? I don't want to build my own batts or make saddle packs and tape them to the chassis. I do have stick packs, by the way.
And as a last resort, I could put a 1500 in the car, but that seems like an insult, putting something that old and "bad" into this nice a car.
Thanx in advance everyone!

i know what you mean....i can hardly fit the 3300s in there....
i ended up using a dremel and sanded down the inside of the retainers at either end. i even had to sand down the ends of the plastic caps that are used at each end of the stick pack.

I've got a TA-03F that I plan on running again this season (just got a new Alpha Romeo body put together and new wheels/tires). Mostly just a basher. I just picked up a 17T motor, but I don't know what spur/pinion to use. Do they get sold as sets? I can't for the life of me find any part #'s on the Tamiya website. The gearing is all stock I think, though it's got a full bearing set, ball diffs, front bumper and decent rooster ESC as hop-ups.
I'm gonna get a 19T as well - any recomendations? Should I get a spur/pinion gear set for that as well?

I don't know about racing competitively - most guys I hear are using them for drifting. It's gear inefficiency actually is beneficial for drifting. I use mine as a drifter. But as you know - a lot comes down to the driver.

0.6 and 0.4 would be very obvious in difference correct? i went in and put in a 14t pinion, part #53064 and it's pretty loud. or is that how a small pinion like that sounds? anyway, did tamiya make these cars for tight tracks? good acceleration, but not much top end.

Wow a 14t pinion? That is pretty small! I picked up a TA03F Pro about a year ago because i found a local on road track and wanted to get back into racing. It handled flawlessly after a little tunning, however like was said above the gearing is very inefficient! i was running a 28t pinnion (i think 29t is as big as the .04 pinions go) on a 19turn motor... it got hot and i still had trouble keeping up with the newer breed of TC's. Great car for small tracks that do not require much speed or a great drifter!
Needler56

yea, i too thought the 14t was small! i took it out and used a 21t, but it was overheating the esc (dynamite tazer 12t) so i thought i'd give the 14t another try and this time it works a lot better and the temps are way low. it also doesn't sound as loud as i had mentioned. not sure what i did wrong the first time, but right now it runs really well i'm impressed

I brought my TA03 TRF edition out to Lazer Speedway's opening day yesturday. Since I hadn't ran touring car in a long time, I entered the stock class. I ran a fairly fresh CO27 and threw on the 17T pinion I had in my box. I also strapping taped in the Orion 3200 LiPo, since it is too long to fit with the stock battery hold-downs. A Protoform Alfa body was stolen from my carpet car and some old Take Off's on blue wheels were put on. To my surprise, the TA03 was fairly quick. Top speed on the straight was as good or better than everyone I was running with and the motor wasn't too hot after I ran. (about 130F) I qualified 2nd, behind a TC5 and in front of a new Xray car and ran well in the main (even leading for a bit) before blowing out and hitting every pipe on the track. I'll charge it up and bring it out again next week. I love this car. :D

Try that with today's TRF's.
Anyway, I currently starting working on mine again, and I noticed this thread was alive also again. (Was looking for some internal gear ratio's, for people also looking into that they are: 2,77 for stockers and 2,68 for the pro's and trf's. (That's the ratio without the spur and the pinion)
Mine is currently back in preroller stage:

Another nice project of mine. All blue stuff is from yeah racing. I love the suspension kit, but I intended this chassis to be a drifter. With this setup however it gives the car so much grip it will hardly slide even with drift tires :D (Tight rear balldiff, loose front diff, oneway counter shaft in the front, hard suspension up front, medium in the back)

I guess there aren't too many more TA03 chassis cars out there anymore, but here's my FRP TA03R and Tub TA03RS! :D

I had a hopped up TA03F-S and a TA03R-S that i had converted into a truck. I didn't really have a use for the TA03F-S (I already have a TB02 drifter) and so I combined the two to make one short TA03 truck with 2 gearboxes, a TA03FR-S-T?
It has:
CF chassis,
aluminium bellcranks,
low profile front shock tower from the TA03F-S because I couldn't be bothered to change it,
red stabilisers because I had to have the rear CF stabiliser mount,
stock shocks because the Ansmann aluminium ones are terrible,
blue rear springs because they were on the TA03R-S truck,
various red bits that were on the TA03F-S,
CF bellcrank link,
turnbuckles,
running the stronger black gears,
aluminium front motor mount and heatsink,
aluminium hexes,
TA03F bumper,
HPI 27t motor from a WK I turned into a crawler (waiting for a friend to drop off his extra one),
12t pinions,
Geolandars,
ghetto body posts,
CF Battery holder
I think that's it.

I think I read somewhere that the TA03 was being re-released as a drifter chassis, can someone confirm this? If this is true then perhaps parts will be available again!? I hope so!

Ok never mind it was a old thread, I got all excited over nothing!
But what I am really excited about is I THINK I lucked into a Robinson Racing spur gear, I bought a tub R version on ebay for 30 bucks, and when I broke it down to see what I needed to fix it didnt look like a tamiya part! The spur itself is black with the number 50 molded in it and it attaches to the steel cluster gear with two countersunk allen screws, is it a RRP gear?

That's the Robinson part alright...I used to race a DJ03 couple of years ago and that was a decent hopup as Tamiya pinions were pricey...only problem with the Robinson was that the plastic spur stripped really easily...I went through a couple sets while racing and that was in a stock class...I would hesitate to use it with a modified motor...but good find nonetheless. Stick to the white gear set for mod motors.

Does anyone know which lipo battery packs will fit a tub chassis TA03??
And for those running 12T pinion gears, did you have to shave material from the inner case housing? I can't seem to get the 12T to work so I'm running a 13T pinion now.

i'm using a nexxus 5000mAh 2s2p lipo that measures 5.3"x1.9"x.71". the shape of the rectangle fits just right inside the shape of the oval of a stick pack. i'm actually using this on a ta02 and i believe they have the same battery tray. it fits right in, doesn't move and doesn't require any mods either.
trinity also makes stick pack shaped lipos

while we're on the topics of battery fitment, i have the TRF version of the TA03-R and the battery tray is way too short for any existing battery, which means I can't run the car. Is there any other battery tray/holder made for the TRF that accepts side x side packs or is just a little bigger?

Thanks for the info, how do you like the Nexxus pack? I'm trying to see if a Team Orion hardcase lipo will fit the tub chassis.
Radio, Tech Racing used to have an aftermarket CF chassis that allowed saddle packs. I may also be wrong, but I think Cross might have had one as well.

for my application, ff01 with a novak xbr 8.5, it's absolutely perfect. it doesn't even get warm and it consistently puts out the power. it is a front wheel drive, so it probably doesn't put too much stress on the system. i say that because i used it on a team losi xxx-cr with a mm6900 and the pack would get pretty warm, like it couldn't handle the amp draw. here are the specs: 12C Continuous (25C burst) discharge rate (60A Continuous, 125A burst). so far in my experience, the pack stays relatively balanced. i'm sure there are better packs out there, but this was the one my lhs had and it just so happen to fit exactly into the battery tray

Guys
I need the instructions for the above hop up. Will this work with a LiPo Zippy pack? Preferably the diagrams that came with the part. What else do I need if I buy this?
Help would really be appreaciated.

WOW...2 years after the last post...is the TA03 really dead? USED to be my pride and joy.

Well I have been racing against newer cars and with a bit of luck and 110% setup the TA03 should be fairly competitive. Just to get spares is the problem now. A lot of guys are collecting the cars, why I do not know. I need spares to race the car.
Regarding the details of this specific thread, I got all the answers I needed, thanks.

Have 2 myself. 1 '03F and 1 '03R - GREAT cars, didn't even know there was a thread for these. Hard indeed to get parts, eBay is your only friend for tracking them down.
Not sure why they have such collector value...I had one when they came out, smacked a curb and never fixed it. Picked these 2 rollers up recently and rebuilt them using the old car's parts. Couple mods here and there, but both are fairly stock, in very good shape and run great.
the '03R is still waiting for paint. the 03F is wearing a 1998 or so Supra body that needs a little cleaning up, but in great shape for it's age. No shelf queens here.

Tamiya released a drift version in 05 its called TA03F Pro Drift Spec Chassis Kit #49377. I think it was Asia only. That means tamiya still has the tooling and probably still sells parts. I would check RCMart and other Asia based suppliers.

So here I am a year later, this car is surely is dead. Apparently this car is one of the cars to have if you drift. In drifting, foward biased weight is ace and the 03F had it in spades. Even then it seems as if no one cares for the plain jane 03Fs, SWB 03's or the 03R's. If you have a F Pro or a David Jun... wanna sell it?
