I have never used sorex before, are they really good for the Impulse? what about foams? I use medial pro for rubber and speedmind or micro systems for foam..

It must be nice over there in Malaysia, you guys can race gas all year around..

I'm from Curaçao, so I know what HOT is,
I race ELLEGI foam tires.
They're really good out here, but only if we use traction compound.

Oh, and another thing
I need some setup ideas for parking lot racing.

If you mean inserts, Speedmind works well for me. I started out with blue/hard for front and yellow/medium for rear. I stripped the original Ellegi foams that came with the kit within 30mins of running on the hard surface where I play. Its been awhile since I put on foams but I like the GRP stuff. It comes with foam protector.

Now I almost always have Sorex 40R and blue/hard inserts all round to maximise lifespan. I find that I can alter my driving style to suit the compounds I use. Of course, I don't drive competitively, but its usually not too far from the better driver's setup. Thats the beauty of the Impulse, it makes mediocre drivers like me look like pros..... :D :D

Homeboy, I've pretty much stuck to the standard setups on my.TSN. I've kept the rideheight higher than most serious racers prefer (6mm front, 7mm rear) but it'll save my chassis. Try it.

thanks for ur input, i am gonna try those sorex tires(they are pretty expensive in here tho....15 a pair...)
btw, isnt 6-7mm kinda high?

Morpehus2be
10-12-2002, 01:54 AM
6/7mm rideheight is 'very' high (depends on what type of driver you are). At this setting, the Impulse is very easy to push around corners (a bit like rallying), but you won't be able to stick to the racing line well. For better line holding, most team drivers here use 3or4mm front 4or5mm rear rideheight, but it will almost always strip a screw or something. Makes for spectacular lighting show thought (when racing at night!) as the chassis scrapes the tarmac. My friend's V-One-R is setup with 4mm front/rear.

Btw, the Sorex, when new, will be quite grippy (despite its 40R rating), it performs like a 26/36R. Scrub it a little (do donuts or something) and it'll be just right (unless you want a real grippy setup, which in any case, you're better off getting the 26R or 36R to begin with). Remember, the trade off is durability against grip. So get whatever suits your style and/or budget.

Bash=hard inserts, 40R med/hard inserts, saves you money.

Race=depends on track type, technical 70% straight 30%, I'd go with the 26R/soft inserts (max. line holding), but if technical 30% straights 40% high speed corners 30%, maybe 36R but med/soft inserts....etc.

Ask the local drivers at your track what tire setups are good.

JB ma..... Anyway, I don't drive at that competitive level. Not yet. There are races at least once a month either in Penang, KL, Seremban or Singapore. JB does not have a track yet. Most races organised in JB are parking lot tracks althought the one held yesterday was a paved track, nonetheless, it is not a permanent layout.

need help figuring this out. i have an impulse pro with rossi pixy black engine n tpo5 outlaw pipe. the problem im currently having (so are some freinds) is that the front belts and/or puley keeps stripping. dont have the problem if i use the standard rear gearbox with the front one way but as soon as i put my ball diffs in it just eats up the front belts like there r a dime a dozen.

any of u guys having the same problems? any help appreciated. cos its really a waste having to leave my ball diff in my toolbox when it can b in the car. thanx

Morpehus2be
10-26-2002, 10:53 AM
Could be you're over geared (straining the drivetrain, esp. with that JP black!;) :D ). Anyway, try to upgrade the drivetrain or, in the case of the rear belts, use a wider belt (e.g; Impact rear belt). Also, check your pulley mount/ bearings. Could be moving due to vibrations or excessive revs. Check the ruined belts, is the damage evenly spread or on only one side of the belt?

jason102276

when talking to a friend who owned an impulse a while ago he said the only problem he had with the car was the pulley that drives the front belt he replaced it with aluminum and no more problems

can i put a side exhaust on it or only rear exhaust versions?? and would a pullstart fit in it??

Morpehus2be - do u think that it could be the gearing? the only ratios that i have changed are the pinions n i dont only have the problem with the rossi engine. even with the stock SX12T Re engine it would kill the belts with the front oneway n rear ball diff combo. but as soon as i put back my rear geardiff n im okay. n no the damage on the belts were not balanced.

jason102276 - do u think that changing the pulleys to alu parts will stop the belts stripping. maybe true if the problem was with pulleys ie pulleys stripping but the last time i changed the belts the pulleys were damage but not to badly.

thanx for the reply guys. more help would b highly appreciated.

Upin, does your engine sound like its laboring to get your car moving? Uneven wear on the belts mights be signs of excessive torque. Is you rear diffs. very tight/heavy? What viscosity of oil did you use? Also, check your pulley mounts and bearings. When you rev the car, is there any binding on the drivetrain? Do you feel any chassis flex when you give it throttle?

Another thing, how have you mounted your steering arms? Check if they're eating into the drivebelts. I had the same problem with the std. mountings so I moved the arms above the servo saver. That way, whenever the chassis bottoms out, the arms won't scrape the front drivebelts.

upin96
10-28-2002, 07:56 PM
morpehus2be - it was at first but then again the engine wasnt properly/fined tuned. its ok now n it hasnt stripped the belt or pulley. but then again i've reinstall my stock rear gear diffs. pulley mounts n bearings r ok. i wouldnt think the arms are rubbing on the belts coz we juat had a race over the weekend n it lasted the whole day. i dont have the problem of pulley or belt stripping if i use the front one way with the rear gear diffs, only happens if i put in rear ball diffs. having doubts over the ball diffs now.

Pullstarts will not fit. Get the rear exaust. Its almost the same price as SE anyway. If you don't plan on any organized racing, then go turbo! There's a reason why they produce turbo engines! Go figure......

Hi Guys,

I have Impulse Pro with Oneway front, Ball diff rear, and Orion .12 Wasp with centrax clutch.

My problem is that when I throttle it spins out to the right .
I was wondering if I can get some wizdom from you guys to help me solve the problem (I pretty light on the throttle too).
Thanks

1)Check for binding/seized bearings. Spin the wheels, is any not spinning freely? Gearbox ok?

2)Rebuild your shocks i.e; check the pistons and make sure you use the same amount and type of shock fluid for L/R.

3)Servo glitching?

4)Did you balance your tires/wheels? Are the inserts properly seated?

5)Check the weight distrubution of your chassis, it may be tweaked.

Presumably you've done all the settings i.e; caster, camber, toe-in/out etc. You can actually induce a slight L/R steer by adjusting some of these settings.

hmmmm....

If you ran normal gear diffs in the front and rear, I would have asked you to check the drive cups slipping...

If you are veering to the right upon light throttle, check the one way bearing on the front right to see if it's working OK. It may be slipping. Or it could be that your ball diff is not set correctly...

Else, it could be that your car is tweaked (not balanced). Also, check the hinge pins on the arms of the right side of the car to see if they are not bent.

I installed the centax clutch (SER801530)on my OS 12 TR (with SG shaft) and I running into some issues. I installed everything according to Milko's instructions however after the installation i do not have enough end-play in the clutch bell ( < .3mm ). I am using two .1mm shims on the cranksaft but I cannot go any lower than this, if i do the flang on the flywheel binds with the neck for the carb. To solve the problem i was thinging about the following options:

1) removing some material from the end of the clutch nut (SER6582)

2) removing some material from the flange on the flywheel (SER6579) to allow the removal of one of the shims.

Does anyone have any opinions or have another option?

Hi Acta,

Nice to see u again.

In my experience, u do not need the shims infront of the clutch nut or behind the 5x8 flanged or 5x10 ball bearing. U only need shims behind the collet. U only need 0.5 to 0.6 of play to ur clutch bell. If u go beyond 0.8 u might hammer the thrust bearing ($14).
U might change ur thrust bearing at all times.

Hope this help, because this works in all of my cars.

ALL of my shims are BEHIND the collet.

Do u just want more than 0.3 playing on the clutch bell?

If so, all u have to do is to tightened the flywheel about 6 to 10 degrees clockwise and that will give u more playing in the clutch bell.

you are using the wrong gear for the rear ball diff.. make sure it is 46T and NOT 47T..47T was made for the impact and 46T is for the impulse...

you are over driving the front with a 47T rear ball diff gear. that is why you strip the front belt. never never over drive the impulse..

do a physical count .. i bet my 5 bucks its a 47T on the ball diff.. get it changed. to a 46T and you will be fine..

i own both the ball diff and the FPS version.. the FPS is alot smoother and easy to adj.

hope it helps

I've had my car pretty dialed in for with the stock 50/47 spurs (for tight technical tracks), and 49/46 spurs (for the technical track with long sweeping corners)...but I haven't had much success with the 48/45 spurs (for the high speed tracks). The Nova 5S in my Impulse doesn't seem to be able to provide enough power for a quicker shift into 2nd. The best I could tune it to is about 30ft. Any earlier, and the engine bogs down. Short of changing my engine to one that produces more power at the lower end of the powerband, can anyone suggest any tips to coax a little more power out of my 5S for that extra punch? I'm using Blue Thunder 25% with Rossi C6tF plugs. It runs a little hot. I'm thinking of swithcing to #7 plugs.

I know its for fast tracks, but its wickedly fast and if I can get more low-end power, I might be able to use it in smaller, tighter tracks.

If you go to http://www.mytsn.com/dealers/ and go to the right-hand side to the "Browse Organizations" area and select the United States as the country and leave the name category blank, a list of Serpent dealers will come up and you can sort them by state. Hope that helps.

I would suggest buy a new motor w/ a sg crank. After everything u will buy ur cx12 and turn it into sg crannk. U will @ spend about $140. Its all up to u if u want convert ur motor or buy a new motor. My point is u will save some cash in a new motor also u will have a fresh motor for the year of 2003

Hey guys, just joined the ranks of the Serpent Impulse nation--what a sweet looking car! I just hopped it up to ALL aluminum and carbon fiber all around--very nice; when I figure out how to do it, I'll post a pic.

Anyway, when I went to install my JR receiver, I found it didn't fit in the area suggested--just a bit too tall! I find that my receiver is the same size as all the others I have (Airtronics, Futaba), so my question is what receiver fits this? I'd prefer to stay with my JR XR3. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

that body will fit, but you gotta trim the foam bumper hold down ((where the front body posts are) and get rid of the foam and bottom piece, then replace it with an impact bumper. if you want more support for the rear portion of the body, u can put a rear floating body mount from an impact too.:)

I am a Serpent nut and I have had great sucess with my Impulse Pros. I will eventually go to the 705, but for as cheap as I have been grabbing Impulse Pros off eBay, I'll stick with them!

Besides, after placing a 705 and Impulse Pro side by side, the changes are few and subtle. The cars are still very close.

Here is a couple of photos of my two Serpent Impulse Pros.

The first one (Teal & Silver) has a NOVAROSSI T5S1 (5 port turbo) with a Centax Clutch, RDLogics OutLaw Pipe, Gear diff rear and solid axle up front.

The second one (Yellow & Striped) has a 5 port Turbo Sirio .12 with a Centax Clutch, RDLogics pipe, Solid rear diff & front One Way. It has a Wolfpack Radicals chassis and Aluminum front shock tower.

Both cars use Airtronics Radio gear with the M8 Transmitter. Hope you guys like them.

Nice rides Serp, could you post some of the chassis, no bodies please?!!?:p

Well I have a question here:

I have just bought a an Impulse, and I see that in the manual and the way that the car was built the it does not have any silicone in the rear and front diffs. I asked a few questions around here and they say that they use grease because it wont leak.
Now, it seems that the diffs have no gasket, would copper sealent gasket maker work in order to be able to use silicone diff fluid as it is better than grease? thank you,
Good luck, :)

SerpDriver1

Not only is there no gasket, there are no o-rings in the outdrive axles. I have tried several ideas (as far as o-rings and gasket materials, etc) to try and use silicone oil instead of grease but it always ends up niot working out. The biggest problem is the increased drag trying to use an o-ring on the outdrives.

I ended up experimenting with different viscosities of diff grease and came up with a pretty happy combo. Since I run the Impulse Pro, I have no front diff to worry about. But it took a few times experimenting with the rear diff to get my car the way I liked it.

Look closely at this photo (http://www.lowcostwebsolutions.com/serp/serp1_chassis.jpg) and particularly at the rear diff. Notice any red RVT as gasket material? LOL These were taken when I was still experimenting with diff oils.

I'll post more later.

SerpDriver, thanx for the info, but there should be a way in order to use silicone oil as it has more durability than grease.
post more info about it whenever you can....I'll try and see if I can do somehting about it, but it will be next week.
Good luck, :)

I've got one Impulse Streespec barely used for about US$ 270
It has got the NovaMega SX-12 SE engine and is totally STD. Do you think it was a good deal? (the 705 w/o engine costs about US$ 700 here in sweden).
And, which parts from my impact can i use as spare/options for it? Will the Centax clutch and rear ball diffrential fit?

Thanx :D

If you look at EBAY, no one care about Serpent Impulse SS with SE engine now...they are too old, $270 is definitely high, you can get one with KO radio and gears with Centax and options around the same price.

I would say, $150-180 sounds fair.......you might as well keep the car as a back up.

Yes....Serpent IMPACT's Centax/2-speed and rear ball diff will work on Impulse, but I believed you need to use Impulse dog bone for the Impulse still.

A bit late maybe.. I bought it long time ago.. Maybe a waste of money but i've upgraded it to Impulse PRO/705 (PRO Carbon parts, 705 transmission parts as ball diff, centax, one-way diffrential). I Hope it will go well.. In Sweden we don't race at the high level you in the states etc. does.. Now i just gotta make a decision: Shall i buy, one-way and all carbon fiber upgrades or a new engine?

Serpent has always got a good part upkeep for "discontinued" models so i'm 99.99% sure at there'll be no problems at all with the parts for a older model (I race the Impulse Pro for example)..

Hi :)

I just bought a Serpent Impulse Pro second hand off ebay :D . The only upgrade is a one way front diff.

What upgrades do you recommend?
Will I have a chance of competing?
What do you think of the car?
Thanks
