View Full Version : Traxxas Slash Short Course Race Truck
We had 12 in our first local track slash race. We never got to run the main due to rain. It was fun watching 12 all on the track at the same time. I qualified in 3rd by .025 seconds. LOL 2nd crossed the line 1/2 truck length in front of me.
All 12 trucks had 5 and 6 laps. Very close racing for all.

It's funny that i'm reading this right now. I just got back from the track and boy those little guys are cool. It seemed as though everyone at the track had one. The rules at the track only allow for the receiver to be changed but everything else must remain stock. There were 12 guys racing them and they all lined up together for the start. THen it was a free for all. Pretty cool if you ask me

The first night our local track held an "official" Slash race, 8 trucks participated. We had 6 or 7 practicing last Friday night, I'm sure we'll have to split the heats up in the near future with the truck's growing popularity. What was almost more exciting to me were the number of spectators that couldn't get enough of them. There were at least two guys that put thier names in for the next batch of Slash's to arrive, and lots of other guys were asking questions about them.
I know some guys are a little gun shy, having been burned after buying CRT .5's or rally cars to participate in these "hot" new classes. They're waiting to see how things pan out prior to investing in a new chassis. I bought a CRT.5 a few months back only to find out the class had completely fizzled out locally. On the flipside, I ran in the rally class when it was popular, it was the single largest class out our track for at least two years, but continued running for 4 or 5. The Slash has several things going for it that the others don't. Simplicity - very low parts count, easy to work on. Durability - metal trans gears, beefy suspension, large body and bumpers take most of the abuse. Manufacturer support - it'd be more of a challenge finding a hobby shop that DOESN'T carry Traxxas parts than to find one that does. And Traxxas' customer support is second to none in the industry. And lastly - Traxxas put something together that really works. This isn't just a pretty face. I may have mentioned it already, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well the truck handled on our prepared track surface. I was concerned that the scale tires would hinder performance - in fact I found that the truck would traction roll if I didn't watch my corner entry speed. Forward bite is great - I'm sure the weight shifting over the rear tires on acceleration plays a big part in this.
I hit the track Friday night for some practice and had the opportunity to run with five other Slashes in some mock-races. We'd line up side-by-side for a heads-up start. Though there was a lot of bumping, there wasn't nearly as much tangling as you'd see in an open-wheel class. I think I was able to stay out on the track for 15-20 minutes at a shot running my 4000 mAh Maxamps LiPo, I had a smile on my face the entire time. The realism of the trucks is worth the price of entry - the performance is icing on the cake.

It's awesome to hear about all the Slash success. As a race promoter myself, I think there is some real potential for these trucks as a travelling points series. The problem is getting everybody to agree as to what is allowed for "spec" racing.
We have two indoor clay tracks, and three outdoor tracks within about a 2-1/2 hour radius. We even have an indoor carpet track that is contemplating an offroad race.

lol, with these trucks, all you'd have to do to keep it fair is make sure everyone ran the stock tires.
Anything else goes.
Good luck getting a brushless to hook up with those tires on dirt LOL.

Stock tires, motor, esc, springs, and body. The only "modifications" allowed should be a radio upgrade and suspension tuning (shock oil ok, any adjustment available on stock arms and towers). I'm on the fence with regards to allowing servo upgrades - the stock servo works well, and has the built-in side benefit of being water resistant. I vote that 2 cell LiPo's should be allowed, since it's the direction everything is headed - and LiPo really wakes the truck up, very few people would complain about the truck being slow and boring.
Our LHS ran a Slash exhibition class at the big summer 3-day event and it was a HUGE success with a large turnout. I didn't have the chance to participate, but everyone that did had a blast.

man thats awesome hearing about the racing. We are trying to get a group of guys together to race on my track here, but not that many have them yet. Still the 3 of us that have them so far are having a blast!

some 1/8th scale buggies don't have front sway bars (hyper 7 pbs)
This is true! But the majority have them.

Another full heat last night. It seems like every week there are the same 4 to 6 guys, and every week there is a new guy or two. The following week that new guy doesn't show up but another new guy does. In the last three to four weeks, enough guys have showed up to race that I know we could pack two full heats. Now if we can just get them all to show up consistently!

Man these trucks rock. I saw one at my LHS, and I immediately HAD to have one. This thing is serious fun! My brother, who's never owned an rc came with me to my LHS and bought one for himself today! I'm charging up some batteries for us to go and play around with them tomorrow. I can't wait to bash around with him. I've also ordered a VXL setup from ebay, and I won't tell him about it untill I'm out bashing. I'm very interested in racing these that's for sure, but our local tracks might not be quite suited to these guys, but I'm sure they'd be capable.

You need to just hit the track with it, its more of a blast then you can imagine.

What tires & wheels are those? They actually look like they fit pretty good. And are those 1/8 scale shocks you have on there? I finally picked one of these up and am itchin' to start modding. :D

Pro line bead locks, HPI Yokahama Geolanders, 8ight-T shocks w/ silver springs and 25wt oil all around. Any tires that you bolt in to the bead locks witll be anrrowed out because the rims are only 1.5 inches wide making them fit better on the truck. They're a little heavy but anyone that ownes a Slash knows that they weigh next to nothing. Weight is a good thing for this truck, IMO.

LOL...thought it was just my truck that had the rear all crooked like that... :D Guess it could use some weight on the side to balance it out.
