I'm mounting a fan on my Mamba Max and I'm trying to find out if it's better to mount the fan blowing TOWARDS the heat sink, or sucking AWAY from the heat sink.
How are other fans mounted (novak, etc)?
Thanks!

Id say downwards, if your going upwards what your doing is removing the warm air arround the heatsink (and not particularly powerfully either as the blades are grooved to blow downwards) if you point it downwards you are blasting the sink with cold air making the sink itself cold.
Thats my theory anywho.

I messed around with a 25mm fan on my mamba max, and found it made little difference. I think any gain from blowing air directly on the esc was negated by the loss of airflow over the heatsink due to the fan being in the way.

yeah for sure...
I've got a 40mm fan that I'll be using and it will be mounted about 3/8" above the esc itself. That way any normal airflow should be able to get to it while adding some extra form the fan. The body is pretty tightly sealed around the chassis (1/8th buggy) so there's not much airflow to begin with. I know the fan has helped before.
I guess seeing as how the fan will be about 3/8 above the heat sink it only makes sense for air to blow TOWARDS the heat sink.. so I guess my question is answered :)
thanks, guys.

I mounted a 5v Novak fan over my mamba blowing towards the heatsink. It definitely helps with temperatures (probably a good 10-20 degrees cooler than usual). I'll post pictures of how it's setup if you want; it's spaced maybe 1/4" away from the heatsink on two relatively long screws...and it's spaced with some nuts (so I can move it closer if I need, because it's as far away as it can get right now).

My fan on my heat sink blows down. And the fan on top of the motor sucks up air through the motor can vent. I found sucking air through the motor can vent drops 30 degrees.
