On the Ultima RB there is a place set up for a transponder. What is a transponder and what does it do for the car?

It's for racing. It allows the computer to count the laps you've done and time taken to complete them. Usually guys cut an extra hole in the body and mount it there, but Kyosho has provided mounts off the chassis...really nice!

and if you get a car without a transponder mount then you usually put the hole in your winshield.

FYI, transponders aren't usually used in regular club races. They're usually used only in big races and events AFAIK. In my years of racing, I've only used transponders at the one semi-big race I attended.

No, you don't buy them. they are given to
each racer right before your heat. We use 20 transponders in total. 10 red and 10 orange.
while the reds are on the track the orange are being put in the cars for the next heat.
when the orange go out the reds come in and go into the next set of cars. We use or system for all racing including our Friday night races. It is so much better than hand counting. No one yelling about a missed lap!
Best of all is a printout with lap time, best lap, lap speed, average speed. oh yea, a transponder is about 1 1/4 square and 1/4 thick. it has a pin (like a short body post)
to put through the hole in your mount and secure with a body clip.

Can't buy a fake one? That way you can set up your car with the weight of the transponder in the car. I have never used one but they don't look that heavy. But in R/C a half ounce can make a differance.

I know the TC3 comes with a counterfiet transponder, so I think associated should/might sell them. If they don't it's probably not that hard to make one. all you would have to do is find the demensions and wieght. I think the demensions are 1 1/4 in. by 1 1/4 in. by 1/4 in. thick, but I'm not sure. Mr. MAXX

Well friday night I found out first hand about races and transponders. I met this new guy (Ziggy)where I work. He is really into R\C heavy. Anyway he took me to a night indoor R\C raceTrack, my first ever. I had my buggy, but it was an elec. touring cars race only. Ziggy let me use one of his cars to race with. I haven't had that much fun in a long time. I crashed much, but as the night went on I got better with each heat I was in. Now I'm really considering a touring car to compete with as well. You guys will probably find this funny, but I was the only American there and the Japanese guys where all racing HPI's. There was only one Tamiya (TL01 chassis) and that was the one Ziggy lent me to race with http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

im pretty sure towerhobbies sells fake transponders..
I dont beleive 1/2 to 1 oz of weight makes such a difference that you have to pay $20 for one. Every track i've been to have different sizes, and $20 for a "professional" one isnt worth it when you can buy a 1/2 to 1 oz piece of lead weight.
