View Full Version : what is a FET servo?

I have 2 LRP Pro Reverse ESC's and they have a blue wire for a FET servo. What is that? I've just been coiling the wire around the switch wires to make it look neat but I would really like to cut it off.

The only guess I had was that it had something to do with running headlights on your car,... am I even close? :D

thanks

Not really, a fet line on a speed control is to power a fet servo. Some servo's get there power thru this direct method from the speed control, instead of getting power thru the receiver. I dont know if there is any advantage to these over a standard servo.

Oh, the older novak speedos came with wire that you could install brake lights. I think they stoped putting those in.

You can read more about it here:

FET servo are not necessarily digital. FET servo operate at a higher voltage to produce higher speeds and increased torque. They require a direct line from the ESC and usually operate at 7.2volts. Which means no gas car for you!

That's an important number to look at when comparing servo's-the voltage it's rated at. Sometimes a company rates their servo's at 4.8volts and they won't look as fast or strong as one rated at 6v.

I would leave it alone. Someday you might want a FET servo. To me, that option is a small price to pay for a small piece of wire. just my opinion, though...

I usually cut it, but leave enough there so I can solder it back on if I have to.

Thanks DerekB,

I think I'll snip it!

Two questions:

1) Does only one wire from the ESC go to the servo? Are the other two wires (ground and signal) coming from the reciever?

2) Do all FET servos need this special wire? Or only the ones that need 7.2V (because I know KO Propo has some 6V FET servos)?

Thanks for the replies! Should I cut the lead for the FET servo or leave it alone?

thanks again

Yes 1 wire from the receiver. The three wires on servo plugs are signal, negative, and positive (white, red, black).

KO does offer FET boosted servo's that do not require the lead. I believe they are internally boosted and they are the FET servo's rated at 6v.

Thanks Derek... FET servos are probably going to be too expensive to fit into my budget anyway...
