I want to buy a motor that will go faster than the stock motor and one which will make thr battery life last longer. I am new to electric racing and have been in nitro recently. I don't know how to install motors so could someone tell me or show me a Picture of how to install one.

what speed control do u have, and do u want one motor for speed and one for battery life or both motors rolled into one??? i can't recommend a motor until u tell me this but i can tell u how to install one.

1. u have to break a motor in first (i still have to do that to my new motor) and if the motor doesn't come with bullet connecters or capaciters u must solder them on the motor)

2. then take the gear cover off with a philips screwdriver. u may need to take the right rear wheel off first. (there is 2 screws keeping the gear cover on)

3. take the 20 turn motor that came with the rustler out by unscrewing the other 2 screws that are below the large gear

4. the small gear on the motor that came with the rustler can be taken off with a allen wrench which should have come witht the kit

5. get the new motor. there are countersunk screw holes where the screws go. put the
pinion (the small gear on the new motor by using the allen wrench)

6. put the new motor through the hole where the pinion gear goes thru and line up the countersunk screw holes with the holes in the gear plate. screw it in. make sure the pinion gear and the spur (the big gear) aren't too tight.

7. and if the rustler came with a slipper clutch u may need to tighten or loosen it as u run to make sure it isn't too tight or too loose. but too tight is better than too loose!!! the slipper clutch is on the spur gear.

8. finally put the gear cover back on with the 2 screws that are left. the smaller screw goes on top and the longer screw on the bottom.

p.s. as u run the motor it shouldn't get TOO hot. it should get hot. just not hot hot. if it does, you may need to buy new gears for the motor. just ask your local hobby shop which gears are right for the motor. pinion and spur gears aren't that expensive

GOOD LUCK!!! http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/wink.gif

Thankyou very much for your time. This will help me a lot I saved what you wrote. I wanted a motor that will give speed and long battery life. My rustler is brand new and it is completely stock it is also my first electric car that isn't a radioshack car so I am new to working on these.

you can get up to a 18 or 19 turn motor. the stock motor in the rustler is a 20 turn. if u would get an ESC (electronic speed control) u can get a faster motor but the faster u get normally the less run time u get. i have a novak explorer 2 ESC in my rustler. i can get up to a 15 turn motor in it now. if u get a battery with a large capacity of power u can have a pretty good runtime with the motors with lower turns. if u get an ESC i recomend a 16 turn motor. specifically a Peak Performance Stratos. its pretty cheap and fast. normally under $30. good motor manufacturers are Reedy, Peak, Orion, and Trinity. if u can get the August 2000 issue of RC Car Action Magazine. it has information on about 50 motors.

How fast will it go with like a 18 turn motor and what type of battery packs should I get right now I only have radioshack 7.2 volts?

i have radio shack 7.2 volt batteries too. i'm gonna get a trinity 1500 mAh amp max 2 which costs about $20. the higher the mAh of a battery the more runtime u get, and the longer it takes to charge the battery.

an 18 turn will probably add a few mph to the rustler but not much. on road about 3 mph and on dirt maybe about 1-2 mph. so not much. but it'll give a longer battery life than a 16 turn motor. a suggested motor for any kind of bashing around truck is a 17 turn so an 18 turn would be just shy of that. i highly recommend an ESC for an 18 turn or below. i had smoke coming from my old speed control. the one that comes with the rustler. its the thing with a ton of wires.

Good Luck with your Rustler

sorry, good battery makers are orion, trinity, dynamite, and duratrax. trinity tends to be very expensive though

Thanks for all you guys help I am really learning a lot I had another question though can I use my radioshack quick charger or do I have to get a special charger and who make hopups for the rustler?

hey, you can find a chameleon pro and they will beat the pants off of alot of motors, some speed gems, i saw one that outperformed my D4 14t quad, mine only hit 3100 something, and the chameleon i saw hit 3300 something, i felt i got royally ripped off. go to www.integy.com (http://www.integy.com) they have the cheapest and best batts i have seen, they also guarantee #'s

If your battery is 1200-2000mAh try a Black Widow Peak Detector. I have one, it rocks. I got mine for 35 at Hobbypeople. You can get a awesome Amp MaxII for about 12. I have one of those too.

I myself have a Speed Gem 2 13T Double coming in the mail. Call Traxxas at 1-800-323-0069 for more help on how to install motors. I have a rustler too. For hop ups look at the back of your manual. What you really need to get first before you put a faster motor is to get the Slipper Clutch or else you will strip gears. Call Traxxas if you need help on how to install this. Also consider the machined gears. For more hop ups made by other companies check out these site: www.rpmracing.com (http://www.rpmracing.com) www.gpmracing.com (http://www.gpmracing.com) there are more too.
