You can tell the era of the mags by the excessive use of pink in the graphics!

Nice find Fester, I like looking through the old mags too.

I think the batts were around 1400 back then. Nicad only. NiMh didnt become available until the mid-late 90's

all of my RC Car Action mags from back have covers that have reverted back in to their pulp state from being read 1000's of times and fantasizing about RC cars as a kid.

I remember those issues too! ;) I shot most of the pictures that you see on the cover of those issues. The Robocop shot was taken in an abandon factory in Stamford, CT and it was the real Robocop outfit. There were two outfits for the movie, one that was used for the "pretty" shots where everything appears more finished and mechanical, and an "action" outfit that had more flexible ribs, joints and forearms. The latter is the one they brought for the actor so we could shoot pictures because it's lighter and cooler. The one pictured only weighed about 60 pounds while the really detailed one was signficantly heavier. The guy described it as being like an old deep-water diving suit that weighs so much that it's difficult and very strenuous to move around for any lenght of time. It was about 100 degrees in the hot sun when we did that picture. They were really good sports about it and the actor was SOAKED in sweat by the time we finished.

I believe I shot all the pictures on the Thunderdrome cover except for the bottom one of the Clod Buster. The Thunderdrome was a really fun event back in the day, watching Mambo slay the mod oval class and Lett with his innovative speed run cars. Sometimes they were fast and other times they vaporized. Cliff use to run the Avoex brushless motors, which really are the pioneers for the brushless technology in the RC market.

Thats also my Turbo Inferno on the cover of the "Hottest New Cars" issue, which I shot while I was on vacation in La Jolla (San Diego), CA. I had a friend drive it on the beach while I was clicking away. If you're from NY, you might remember Mike "Pags," who ended up with that car. I also shot a Clod Buster with a Red Corvette body and a Blackfoot that had some nice Sees aluminum wheels, a Lexan body and a grip of aftermarket stuff installed. I think both of those ended up making it on covers too.

Good find on the magazines. I have most of the old issues... I have to crack them open to see what was inside. :D

I got a bunch of old ones too. I think the oldest one I have is from 1986. My favorite ones were the Monster Truck specials.

Another thing that changed is the way we paint RC shells now from then.

This has put me in the mood to run up to my dad's and pick up all my old RCCA mags this weekend! I should have all of them from the first issue ('86, not sure what month), all the way up until my Sophomore year in high school, when "other" interests took priority. As soon as I had my first job after high school, the first thing I bought was a new RC10GT.
Anyway, those old magazines got me through some tough times. If things weren't going well at home, I'd bury myself in the articles and pics. They're no longer in very good shape because I'd read each issue cover to cover countless times, and a few pics ended up taped to the cover of my peechees. Funny thing is, my stepdad kept my good rc equipment stashed away in his closet most of the time. If I wasn't driving them, I wasn't breaking them and spending money on parts. The smallest infraction got my stuff yanked for months at a time. So I lived vicariously through the staff of RCCA. I idolized Chris Chianelli back when his hair was still considered relatively cool (by a select few), and was bummed the first time he left to follow his dream of being a rockstar.
Something I really miss are all the in-depth drag, oval, and custom vehicle articles. Anyone remember Grumpy's Toy? Or the rocket cars (at least one was based on a Kyosho 12th scale pan car)? And the IFMAR offroad worlds articles - a couple of them were simply amazing, like the Offroad Worlds in Australia. If you've got that mag, take the time to read the report. Good stuff!
The race reports from Lake Whippoorwill were great, too. The pics of the Tamiya Wizards being raced are what prompted me to buy an F103-L years later - even though oval racing doesn't exist in our area.
So, enjoy those mags! I'll post up some pics next week if I get my hands on some of the older stuff.

Good find, I have every one of those issues. I even have a rare 1990 Off Road Special issue with the Off-Road buyers Guide. The entire buyers guide section is printed on what feels like heavy newspaper.

Wow, that is a trip down memory lane. I have a few magazines from that era as well. I remember some of those covers with the "graph" paper type and flourescent colors.

Hello all! New to Radio control Zone.
Would anyone have the November 1994 issue of rc car action?
I've been looking everywhere for this issue. I emailed rc car action and they don't have archives of their own mags?!? No luck on ebay! Would anyone have this issue?
Thanks!!

It's sad. I had all of those and even more. But a few years ago I trashed all of them because I just couldn't move them around anymore. I kept the ones with reviews of cars that I had like the Ultima Pro and Optima Mid SE.
