Hi i have a tl01 and since about a month ago its been going through gears like crazy.
5 sets of gears to be exact.
its always the same gear tho its alwas the counter gear and every time i take the car apart to get at the gear all the others are perfectly fine not even a scratch.
The chewing down take about 10 seconds to happen and the goes another set of gear since you cant buy them separately.
Any suggestions????

Are you running lube on the gears? Is there something binding in the tranny? I wouldnt know, since ive never used a Tamiya =). But I would check for binding, or like the gear mesh isnt correct. Maybe you are missing a spacer or something. Sorry man, thats all I can think of.

heres my opinion since i have a tl01. Use metal gears http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif if that dont work check the gear boxs inside for scraping on the inside of it. It may rub the gears then they break.

I'm not exactlly sure of the trans layout in tamiya TLO1 cars, there trans is differant then some others, if the counter gear that you are talking about is what would be the spur gear on other cars, you could check to make sure you have a tamiya style pinion gear, they look like 48 pitch pinions but they are not, its hard to tell by looking at them cause they are so close, but the tamiya gear is metric not a 48 pitch and could cause the problem you are discribing.I had a tamiya pinion gear mixed in with my 48 pitch gears and when i used it it was very loud and chewed up my spur. i hope this helps you out.

Well I have had that problem but I only went through 2 sets. I finally decided to step up to the tuned gears. As I've been told the mesh was incorrect. That was the problem. I believe that Tamiya screwed up with telling you how to put the pinion gear on the motor. They tell you to put the screw side towards the motor. WRONG!!!!! The best way I found is that you put the screw side towards the outside of the motor with about 1 or 2mm of space between the edge of the screw and the end of the motor shaft. That will maximize the meshing. Tell me how it turns out. I hope that my info is correct.

also i found that the shaft the counter gear rotates on is melted into the chassis maybe i should go upgraded chassis and gears.

yeah i run lube on all the gears. when i install the new gears i push the car aroung a bit to check for binding but no such thing it rolls nice and smooth. i am running a tamiya pinion, the mesh is perfectly fine.

Well then if you dont have any problems with mesh and binding then up from the current pinion, thats if you are running the 19 tooth pinion gear. I ran a 21 tooth for about 1 month before the gear showed any probs. What you should do is go for the Speed tuned gears from Tamiya ($9.50) and a 21 tooth pinion. You get some good speed. I have had them for about a month and every now and then I check to see if the counter has any wear and tear. NONE I TELL YOU. That was after a month with running a Peak Spitfire in it. I'm thinking that it all has to do with gear ratios. The stock ratios I guess are ment more for play than anything else. I figure that the pinion is spinning faster than the counter can. What do I know anyway. I hope that it helps.

k thanx for the input ill try that ill go upgraded chassis to cuz my friends tlo1 il has that and its lighter than my rs4,it looks kool and its tougher
I have gone through countless TL01 counter gears and here are my suggestions:
Check your gear alignment carefully! I put the setscrew part of the pinion away from the motor. The problem is the shaft is often too short to get the setscrew on while keeping the pinion from rubbing the motor. The remedy: a few washers or a losi thrust washer in between pinion and motor bushing. Lube both quite heavily.
I also like to use different lubes on my gears. Bike shops seam to be the best source for something like "white lightning" lube or "ice wax" lube. These lubes are self cleaning, thin, and very effective and keeping the drivetrain quiet and cool.
Be sure to check your bearings for binding. All of my internal bearings on my TL01 are sealess so I can spray them out and make them super free.
Good luck!
