I have an old motor that has a lot of small metal shavings around the outside of the can. Where are these coming from and what can I do about it ? Is it worth salvaging ? It's about 15 years old.
It's never been rebuilt, taken apart, etc.
Smoke came out of it once too.

that is lead from the dirt. the magnets attract lead you cant see lead in sand or dirt but if you take magnets you can.

Thanks! I was just worried that it was falling apart. I'm going to pull it apart anyway to see how bad it is.

Warhawk...I have to disagree most strongly. Magnets will only attract ferrous metals. That is ones with iron in them. Lead is not attracted to magnets or if you have something that will attract lead you are about to become very rich. If the motor smoked at one time isn't it more likely that the armature rubbed on the inside of the can and did a minor lathe job on itself? I've never had this problem myself but unless ScottPro2 was doing some metal filing or ran his car down the work bench in the garage there isn't much in a motor that is ferrous except the armature, the can and the magnets themselves. Just my $.034CDN....

No didn't run it on a workbench. I wouldn't be surprised if the comm self cut it self. I've beaten the heck outta that motor. It's been off road, on road and did I mention it just sat around for 15 years or so. :D I think it's a Trinity speedworks pole position from the 80's. Vintage

Got a RS4 Pro2. Ran it last night with a Speed Gems 2 12 turn, 34/122, Dually ESC and a 2000. Waiting on my v7.1 to come back from TA.
