View Full Version : Is it normal for NICd's to run hotter than NiMh's?

I just bought my first set of NiCd batteries for my E-Maxx. Prior I have been running strictly NiMh's.

The NiCd's were noticeably quicker! I was pleased. The run time was a little shorter, but the extra oomph was neat.

Then I felt how warm everything was. Holy smokes, it was H-O-T, way to hot to touch. It never ran this hot before with the NiMh's.

Is this normal? Am I supposed to change gearing because I changed battery type?

I am concerned I will be doing damage with this much heat.

5 minutes after shutting it down, I used my Ranger ST-3 and found the speedo was 94*; the motors were 122*; and the batteries were 153*!

I don't know if this is normal or very, very bad.

Please advise me, thanks!

HOLY mother of mayhem!!!!! 153!?!?!?! that IS abnormal!!!! i dont know much on the E-maxx... but what kinda NiCds you using? cause i know trinity makes MaxxPaxx (or somethin like that) for the Emaxx... hmmm it could be the gearing... so why not gear down a bit or better yet... what kinda esc you got? i heard there was a recall on that traxxas esc.

I'm already using a Super Rooster esc. The batteries I bought are Peak Power Maxx, a set made for the EMaxx, 2400mah Ni Cd's.

Anyone else???

Love your name!

Anyways, I have always been told that the motor, and batteries should be warm to hot after they have been run and the ESC should be cold. That means the power is being used from the batteries and applied to the motor and the ESC is working as it should. I race competetively and this happens all the time. I have seen my packs pretty hot after a long tough race, especially in my 4WD cars on and off road. I do think my nicads do get a bit warmer than my Nimhs sometimes. When running the 9-10T motors with my Powers 3000's those motors really **** the battery power and my Cyclone is always cool.

The increased power will casue your motor and ESC to run hotter. Altering the gearing will slightly lower temperaures but unless you shoould have no problems.

As far as the battery goes you should not have any problems. Some stick packs have lots of material added to form the stick pack and this can have an insulating effect. But unless you notice performance problems (you said you felt faster with the Peak Power-MAXX batteries) I would not worry too much - just enjoy the extra power!

Thanks for the info, gentlemen! I feel somewhat relieved now :)
