I have put a kyosho X speed into my Atlantio boat. I think the motor has 18 turns on the armature. It goes like stink on 8.4 v , but I have gone through two esc's in a very short period of time. I checked, and the motor draws about 35 amps.I used a speed controller which was rated at constant 50 amps, and upto 100 amps for brief period. I also well cooled the esc with water. Can any body recommend a good esc which would cope with the stock x-speed 540 motor ? Does the number of winds on armature affect speed controller ?

yes, the # of turns will change the performance of the motor. less winds will mean more amp draw. one of the best ESC's for brushed motors is from rchydros.com. jeti also makes good controllers.

Hi BoatDoc,
do you recomend rchydros esc from personal use / experience ? The esc I used with my x-speed motor was a 50amp rated item , called tornado, purchased from Overlander, and probably made in China. Also I have been advised best to fit schottky diodes to the motor. I wondered what type of diode comes supplied with the kyosho x-speed motor. I was told that the schottky diodes give the esc an easier life.

rc-hydro's controllers is not making esc's anymore. however, there may still be some in stock at OSE or another vendor.
