The first of its kind!
Previously the only way to build a competition capable rock crawler was to buy bits and pieces of several different kits here and there, sometimes taking several months just to get the right parts together before you could even start the build.
Now you can get everything you need in one box and, in a matter of a few hours of build time, be able to hit the rocks with the Axial AX10 Scorpion 1/10 Rock Crawler Kit.
Axial has designed a completely new kit from the ground up. Each detail has been well thought out and provides you with a solid rock crawler base to work with.
Axles
The axles have been designed with many features that are not available from other choices on the market. Everything from the axle strength, pinion angle, caster, and ground clearance were taken into consideration, the result is a stronger better axle that will outperform the rest. An aluminum diff locker is included along with hardened drive shafts and axles.
Chassis
The AX10 Scorpion chassis is lightweight and stiff. Twin 2.0mm aluminum side plates are tied together with aluminum posts and a molded nylon transmission/skid plate. The chassis was made small and compact to cut as much weight as possible. A simple battery/radio tray makes installation of your electronics quick and easy. Wheel base is adjustable from 304mm ~ 320mm.
Transmission
The AX10 Scorpion transmission was designed to place the weight of the motor as low as possible while still allowing a wide range of gearing choices. The overall ratio can be adjusted from 15:1 all the way up to 74:1 using different pinion/spur gear choices. The transmission is locked with no differential action and features hard anodized aluminum out-drive shafts.
Shocks, Links and Driveshaft
Super long shocks offer a wider range of articulation as well as an optional range of spring choices so you can tune your crawler to work on any terrain. All suspension links are made from lightweight and strong aluminum. The driveshaft is made from a strong composite material and features hardened metal yokes.
Wheels, Tires and BodyNo crawler would be complete without the essentials. The AX10 Scorpion comes outfitted with the popular 2.2 Rockster beadlocks sporting green rock rings and Rock Lizard tires. And to complete the AX10 Scorpion is the popular B-17 Betty body in .040 thick polycarbonate is included.

I hear ya man. I like the idea of making a custom crawler, but seeing as I don't have any experience with them at all, a kit is perfect. Time to go check pricing so i can figure out how long i have to not eat to get one.

Good thing you told me, i just checked their site and I can't fond this thing on there anywhere, maybe I'm just dumb. 425 doesn't seem bad, I'm pretty sure you could spend way more piecing one together, which is the way I would have to do it.

I say load up the mini van with some trading material and take a cruise on over ;) .. I hope Axial keeps the green color ... For some reason I love it ...... I cant wait to hear some of our resident crawling experts critique it ... I want to see if i am in love or just lust :D

This sucks. The product looks great, but IMHO, one of the very best things about crawlers was that you actually had to build it. You couldn't just sell one to any tool who wanted a rock crawler and had some money. Crawling has officially jumped the shark. :(

Kits have already been available, but they are all pretty much full comp rigs with sky high prices. And I don't understand how someone without experience or the means to fab something of their own makes them a tool. To me it makes them a beginner with an interest in crawling, and that's who this kit is for.

I've had several crawlers over the past couple of years, made my own tuber and I think it's great for growth of this segment of R/C. Maybe other companies will jump on the crawler trend and you know what that means?? More variety, better products and cheaper prices, what is wrong with that?

I don't really think you can put IMHO when you put that much attitude into the comment. I think that by having the new axles, there will still be people who take them and make what they want out of the them and throw away the rest of the kit. People who like building stuff will take new RTR trucks and make what they want with them as well.

I will probably mount the electronics on the top to one side and strap a small 2s lipo on the underside of the tray,on the opposite side.I think this will help keep things uncluttered and clean looking. Not to mention it will help to lower th CG

This seems to be the prevailing attitude in fast electric boat racing as well. But once the "old guard" figures out that products like these bring an infusion of cash and new blood to the the hobby, they'll loosen up. There will always be the hardcore elitists - the guys that have to create and entirely new, expensive "super mod" class to make sure that money outpaces driving skill (i.e. 1/8th scale hydro & 45"+ 32 cell offshore boats). Seeing the new Aquacraft actually place well in P mono at some of the clubs around the country is very telling of it's success. You think the guy running the SV27 isn't going to try out another class in the future?
Crawling is just in it's infancy - this rig will help bring it to the mainstream. I've stood at the counter of the LHS listening to veteran racers admire the owner's crawlers, but make comment that they just don't have the patience to spend weeks or months building a purpose built crawler. I'm sure the introduction of a $275 "rock ready" kit will bring a great deal of these guys in to the segment.
Hopefully, these rigs will ignite the desire to build custom crawlers down the road. This IS just a 2.2 rig, which is a class that started life as a cheap alternative to building full-on, high-dollar TXT/Clod/Jugg/Mad Force based rigs, right?
But, you just never know. Look at the aweful effect that the introduction of the T-Maxx had on the hobby...
suckfish
04-23-2007, 01:03 PM
Well seeing how I just finished my 2.2 crawler, Axiel is really stepping up to the plate with inovative products. buy getting a company to mainstream a pure rock crawler in my opinion will only do good for Rock Crawling. I'm also one of those fast electrics boat racer, but mainly because half the battle in boats is making sure your build is correct and setup properly.. But RTR is what keeps the hobby growing

Some guys even design their own battery packs that are mounted above the steering knuckles and fit inside the rim, however this may be difficult on a 2.2 size crawler.

I truly like the look of this truck, however I am most up beat about the axles! They are by far the most realistic looking on the market. My only wish would be that they could be unlocked as I would like to put a set under my Grave Digger XVI Replica tube chassis. Still I think I will get this any way... just may not stay together for very long.

High Lift axles are by far the most realistic looking, and they are easy to lock/unlock.
Id like to see one of these run. I dont think ill pick it up as part of the fun is piecing one together for me. They are a great way for new people interested in crawling to get into the scene.
Just because its a kit doesnt mean its going to do well. Its going to depend if the driver can set it up right for the terrain they will crawl on and if the driver can drive :teacher: It will make it easier though IMO.

IMO, I would say, no. TXT axles are based on 5-ton military axles which have not been standard on full scale MT's since like '89 or '90. They went out a long time ago. Today's full scale MT's use axles closer to that found on a school bus. The Axial axles are closer to these in scale appearance.

Well this is a differance of intended use. For a scale crawler the High Lift axles are pretty scale in appearance. If I was going for a scale crawler I would go with these too.
However I am building a scale replica of GD XVI. A monster truck not a crawler. In my case the HL axles would look like twiggs under my truck between Clod tires and it would look horribly out of scale.
From the look of these Axial axles I would say that they look more scale for my intended use of a scale monster truck. Time will tell but I'll see.
As for this being a kit. I could care less. Like I said in my original post we'll see just how long it stays that way in my hands.
As for the fun of piecing a ride together... well there is no other way to build a scale tube replica of a full scale monster truck now is there.....
Sorry but there is little interest from me in crawling, I can't drive anything slow, just ask my wife when we go down an alley! :)

You're pretty limited in suspension design when it comes to solis axles, so it makes sense that you'd find similarity between a modified clod chassis and this one (or any other custom crawler, really). A link setup or leaf springs are your options, though there are variations on both. Sticks are the only exception I can think of, but they're also not representative of any full scale trucks.

Ugh! I really wish these were out. I want a crawler something fierce and can't decide between one of these and converting a WK. I really like that the scorpion is a kit. I wish those were still the rule instead of the exception now. The quality looks outstanding, but I'm always leery of new and untested product. Case in point, I almost bought a DTX Warhead instead of my Savage SS 4.6. I'm SO glad I didn't. That kind of worry is probably unfounded here, though. I can't wait until these get into people's hands and feedback starts coming in for them. Can't you get those cargo ships to move faster?
