Modified motor ?
Depends on how much you want to spend. Novak is a good name brand and they offer ESCs with reverse.
Futaba makes ESCs that you can get with a radio if just bashing around. ESC will definitly be better than the manual speed contrl.

Ok your best bet is the Novak Explorer II. It can handle up to 15 turns and for 45 bucks how can you go wrong. It warrentied and its a good name brand. Its a good deal.

Well the Novak doesn't go backwards, why buy it when you can get the Futaba ESC for 50 bux? Where you can disable reverse if need be.

Wow im guessing your preaty new so heres a couple things you should know and what I need you to do. Look at your motor and tell me what it says. Does it say mabuchi? Or is it just silver? Turns is how many turns the wire takes around the armature. Less turns the faster the car but hotter and shorter run time. 13T = 13 turns. If you have a stock motor, (27T or 27 turns) get the duratrax blast ESC ($39.99 at tower). It has reverse. Novak is mostly for racing. I'm not saying theres anything wrong with novak, infact it's my favorite company. But they are expensive because they are loaded with features you don't need if your bashing. If your not new, someone else may have needed the basic info. :D
