How hot is hot ? How long should you be able to touch the motor before feeling the burn.

Looking into motor mounts and heatsinks to help bring down the sizzle.

What's your opinion?

i heard you should be able to hold down your thumb for about 5 sec.

No way! 5 seconds? My tamiya pan car I built was stock. I did'nt mess with anything and after a run with cheap 1500, I would burn myself if I touched the motor for few seconds. My nikko 1500 is probly the lowest voltage a motor will get but remember, motors are supose to get hot. That's how you know your running them and using them to their full potential. This is like saying, you have to hold your tumb on your nitro motor for 5 seconds for it to be running at the right tempurature. I'm not sure exactly how hot a motor should get but I know of some people who had their motors up to 700 degrees. (VERY BAD)If you car is stock ( you didn't change the gearing or motor or add extra cells ) and it's "hot" than thats ok.

Thanks Haunted, It's nice to hear a little sanity about the heat thing. There is a big increase in resistance when you heat the windings on a motor, it weakens the magnets, & is very hard on the com & brushes. I will say however that how hot is accepable has a lot to do with the application. On road I would think would run more flat out than off road, buggies run cooler than trucks. I can hold my finger on my buggies P2K after a heat indefinately (& yes it's always fast) where as my boy's trucks are more like 3 seconds or so. This is due to the marshmallo tires on a truck vs buggy tires which have less friction to them. It also has a lot to do with driving style. People that run tight lines will run cooler that those with wide lines. I would say that 2 or three seconds would be the limit for me. Just my $.02

Thanks for the info all.

I guess it's time to knock some teeth off the pinion and play around. I figure if you feel the burn after a second, it's too hot (wasted energy).

Chill out

No wonder my motor runs like it's from the firey pits of helli tself. Or should I say it runs hotter then one of brycecums freinds after ingesting fart biscuits...

OK, I run nitro. And yes... I came over to the other side today for the heck of it. Actually, I am reading all of HauntedMysts' post. They are cracking me up.

Anywho... although I am nitro... I do have a RADIO SHACK buggy from 12 years ago. I can't touch the buger after I play around with it. It just too hot. I am so sure you guys wanted a butt head to come in here and type this stuff.

OK.. i outta here.

lso, the motor design you're using can have some influence on how hot it gets. The older Yok-based & the Green Machine 3 based motors both are pretty sensitive to being overgeared, & when you're even a little off they can heat up pretty bad. And then there's the MVP....those seem to get hot no matter what you do, they even get unusually warm durning a 1 minute break-in on a 4 cell pack(when all the other motors I've had hardly heat up at all, even my Ti-based 13 double). However, MVP's still appear to put out lots of power, even when they're scorching hot, so I've just decided to not worry about it too much..... :)

Can all you guys that hold any of your hand appendages on your motor for 5 sec while it's hot please post to this site every time you burn yourself so we can collect data on the "rule of burned thumbs".
Just something quick like, "yep, did it again" "ouch, this smarts" or "hey, I think I burned off my finger prints this time! woo-hoo!" Also it would be interesting to note if you let out an explative or just screamed like a girl. Not there is anything wrong with girls. Thanks.

roadrage,
That goes against everything i've ever heard or read. The rule of thumb I've always read is, if you car is geared correctly, you are supposed to be able to hold your finger on the motor for about 3 seconds before it feels like its burning. Excess heat means the energy is being 'burned' as heat instead of in motor moving power. If you have excess heat, then your gearing isn't correct and you probably aren't going as fast as you could.

heat is bad? i though heat was good thats what i read somewhere
