Maybe someone else can post links. When dealing with any gear set divide the driven gear by the drive gear. It's just like a ten-speed bike (the larger the drive gear is the faster it'll go AND take more tork to go)
An example with a spur and pinion might be a 15 tooth pinion driving a 90 tooth spur gear has a ratio of 6:1 and a 20 tooth pinion with an 80 tooth spur is 4:1 and will go a lot faster (higher gear)

Okay i understood some of that. My eyes just go blury sorry.
How do you work out a top speed of a car from the cogs and rpm then?
How do you work out what gearing is best?
Sorry i probably sound terrible. I just don't have a clue to what is a good gearing.
