What do you think of the Traxxas recall on all of their VX12 ESCs? Do you think it will ruin their reputation for making ESCs? If you do not know about the recall, I copied and pasted the info to this topic to save you some time.

URGENT RECALL AND REPLACEMENT NOTICE: Traxxas® Corporation is announcing the recall of all VX-12 electronic speed controls. The VX-12 comes as standard equipment in the Traxxas E-Maxx™ electric monster truck. Traxxas has determined that some components used in the VX-12 speed control are overly sensitive to moisture. In the presence of moisture, these components can short circuit and create a fire hazard. In addition, improper wire routing for the BEC (battery eliminator circuit) can melt the insulation from the wires, short the BEC circuit, and render the VX-12 inoperable.

Mandatory recall:

This recall is mandatory, and covers all VX-12 production. Even customers with good, working VX-12 speed controls must return them for a replacement to ensure the correct and safe operation of their Traxxas E-Maxx.

VX-12 Replacement:

Traxxas Corporation has partnered with Novak Electronics, Inc. to provide, free of charge, new Novak-designed and manufactured Traxxas EVX speed controls to replace all Traxxas VX-12 speed controls.
The new Traxxas EVX speed control is microprocessor controlled, programmable, and features 14-volt forward and reverse operation, Smart Braking™, One Touch Setup™, high power servo output, and thermal protection.
The EVX speed control will replace the VX-12 speed control in all new production Ready-To-Run E-Maxxes. Traxxas’ partnership with Novak Electronics ensures that Traxxas customers will have unquestionably the highest quality electronic speed control available, designed and manufactured especially for the E-Maxx by Novak Electronics.
The Traxxas EVX speed control is only available from Traxxas and is warrantied and supported solely by Traxxas.

Directions:

Please read and follow these instructions carefully! Failure to follow these instructions could slow down the processing of your speed control exchange or result in a rejected package!

Do not attempt to exchange your VX-12 at your local dealer. Dealers have been instructed to direct all customers to this website. All exchanges will be made directly with Traxxas.

Do not contact Novak Electronics, Inc. They will not be able to assist you in any way with the exchange of your VX-12, or with information regarding the specifications of this speed control.

You must return your VX-12 speed control in order to receive a new speed control in exchange.

1. (Very Important) You must have an RMA (return merchandise authorization) number to return your VX-12. (Very Important). The RMA number will be used to track and expedite your exchange.

2. Do not ship the E-Maxx. Only send Traxxas the speed control. Remove any battery or motor connectors you have installed before returning the speed control.

3. Do not call Traxxas! Carefully and accurately fill out the online form to receive your personal RMA number. Make sure you fill out your address information correctly or you may not receive your replacement speed control.

4. Use a valid E-Mail address when filling out the form.

5. Once you submit the form, you will receive a response page. Print 2 copies of the response page.

a. One copy is for your records
b. Cut the second copy in half. The top portion has your RMA number and should go in the box with your VX-12. The bottom portion has Traxxas’ address and should be used as a shipping label on the outside of your box.

6. Confirm that your RMA number is in 2 places:

a. On the outside of the shipping box
b. Inside the package with your VX-12

7. Insure your package! Insure it for $180, the value of the replacement EVX Speed Control. Traxxas cannot be responsible for packages lost in transit to us.

8. Ship your package to Traxxas using the carrier of your choice. We recommend using a carrier that offers complete package tracking services.

9. EVX replacements will ship by June 4, 2001. Prior to June 4, there will be no benefit to use more expensive overnight or 2-day air shipments.

10. After June 4, 2001, you can expect to receive your new EVX speed control within 7 to 10 working days. Once your new EVX ships, you will receive an E-mail message with a tracking number.

11. Please do not call Traxxas directly for status updates. No information will be available until we receive your VX-12. At which time you will receive an E-Mail. Watch your e-Mail for shipping status information after June 4, 2001. Make sure that you give us a valid e-mail address so that you can receive status updates.

We at Traxxas regret the inconvenience this recall may cause you. We hope to reward your patience with this stunning new Traxxas EVX speed control. This $180 (retail) speed control with greatly enhanced performance is being provided FREE in exchange for Traxxas VX-12 speed controls that were used in the Traxxas E-Maxx. Your complete satisfaction and safety is our primary concern.

I never thought they made great ESCs in the first place, the VX12 was a good attempt with only one major problem. If they are going to stay in the ESC business, I don't think this event will be that big of a problem.

I think it gives them loads of credibility, especially teaming up with Novak

I didn't even know they made ESCs period until the E-Maxx came out with one.
This recall makes me think that Traxxas is still one of the Best at Customer support. Of course you could look back at the Firestone/FORD recall of the tires and ask the same question about those companies. Recalls are there to protect the comsumer and they work if the information gets out early enough. I have to tip the hat to Traxxas, not Firestone though. But they could have reacted a little faster. Old Phart had his flame a long time before the recall. I just hope he gets a refund or at least a new ESC from Traxxas even though his flamed before the Recall.

thats the whole point.. it takes quite a few cases before they will/have to react a recall.. i say Kudos to them (not for making a bad product).. but at not just giving a fixed version of the ESC.. but one thats ALMOST TWICE THE VALUE.. i mean.. dang.. thats something.. they will haveta raise the price of the kits now for the e.. but the people who already have it.. get the BETTER esc for free.. think about that for a sec..

thats special

I think it shows responsibility and commitment to the product they sell. they could just let you get your new E-Maxx out of the box and let it blow up on you. And people know that Novak makes very good speed controllers...just another reason to buy one. :)

Want to hear about recall integrity? Mazda advertised their 2001 Miata had 152 bhp but then they found out with the emittions equipment added, it was only 140bhp. They are offering to buy back every 2001 Miata sold. EVERY ONE! Of the thousands sold, only something like 12 have been exchanged. That's pretty impressive in my book.

I live in a good part of MA. I live near 7 local tracks. I live in one of the best areas in MA for RC racing because there are alot of tracks. But it must really stink to not live near people who are not into RC.

Traxxas never had a rep with ESCs...

Traxxas is showing some integrity by standing behind a defective product and making it right to the consumers. Not only are they making it right, but they're upgrading you. They could easily have not recalled them and then we would all have to replace the defective one with some out of pocket money.

Traxxas is okay in my books. And they make great trucks too, I have 6 of them. Now if they would team up with Nova Rossi or OS and give us some better engines, they would rule!

umm.. where did you get this info on the miata? i've never heard such a thing.. and after searching for a bit.. can't come up with anything??.. besides HP in a car is all relative.. to the weather.. the where its measured.. what equipment measures it.. blah blah blah.. besides.. auto manufactures tend to rate HP either high or low on most cars.. the 2002 VW 1.8t will now have 180hp.. but be listed as 170 (as to not upset there Audi franchise).. so back it up with a link.. i'll back mine up
