On foam tires? It is usually called Tire Truing. You true the tire's diameter on a tire lathe like you would a comm on a comm lathe. It allows you to customize the diameter of the foam tire and keep it round.

I beleive you do it when you intend to run limited slip diffs in both front and rear. When the diameter of the front and rear wheels are differnt.

Usually to true down the rear wheels because 1/8th scales have larger diameter rear wheels than the fronts. Called over drive.
Running 2 limited slip diffs without trueing the tyres would cause the drive train to break
You dont have to true down your rears if you run a front one way in this case.

So like hijacker said maybe its just to make sure you get 100% contact between the tyre and floor without changing the camber. Or to get rid of any flat spots that may have occcured through over exuberant braking. And also to scrub up the smooth tread in order to gain extra traction i supose.

In the real world of 1:1 vehicles, Tire Shaving is just modifying the tread pattern on the tire. The most prominent shaving is done in Monster truck racing & Tractor pulling on the big chevron lugs of the tires they use.

IceWind - lube? Do you mean shaving cream? Or is your mind really, really twisted? Most girls will actually shave to:

1. Make sure a guy isn't going to get sickened looking down "south"
2. When they wear thongs & skirts, they don't want pubes showing, grossing out those looking.
3. They like the smooth feel
4. Love the extreme amount of pain caused by getting a Brazilian :p

It could also be what i heard about some guys shaving the outside edge of the front tires to get a little push to avoid rollovers.
