View Full Version : Stock motors compared

I had my friend dyno some of my motors Wednesday at the track and the results may surprise you. It surprised me a little, but not really. What I'm talking about is this: my Orion Chrome Stock outperformed my P2K in every way except RPMs, where the P2K had less than 100 more. My Chrome has more power, torque, efficiency, and basically the same RPM as my P2K. I'd felt that my Chrome had an edge over my P2K and I'd been using it instead for a while, but now I know for a fact that it IS better.
My friend also tested my Warlock WFO (I think it's a Paradox clone, but I'm not sure) and it was outperformed by both motors in every category but RPMs, where it had over 2000 more than the others. Because of that, I'll probably use it in my buggy when I get it going.
So it ends up my P2K pro has been outclassed in the important areas I was looking for, and because of that it will be a bench-sitter indefinitely. I'll keep it for emergencies, but it's not my weapon of choice anymore. I just thought some of you might want to hear about this...

Can we get any more #'s? Hmm, that is interesting, did Jerrit do the Dyno'ing? Was this after both were rebuilt?
I wish mine was an Orion motor, not a Peak, the Orion has a cooler label

No, Joe did the dyno-ing. You probably don't know him. Jerrit was there discussing the numbers with us though. It was done after both had roughly equal runs on them (a few race days). I'll get them rebuilt and have him dyno them again to see what happens. At least I know now how they behave after they've been run for a little while. I'll show you the numbers later.

Nah, the P2K's torque output is kinda like a mod(that is to say, it puts out a lot of it), but it falls pretty short on top end, as does the Chrome/Spitfires I've dyno'd myself. Really, the best balanced motor I've seen lately is the MVP, it can match the P2K for torque & power but it has better top end & more importantly, it retains more of its torque at top end. However, I still haven't seen any motor with more top end than the Green Machine 3 or the older Yok motors(like the Reedy Rage), those may still be the best for big, fast tracks where you need to carry more speed through the corners..... :)

Im going to try to get my GM3 dyno-ed. This motor is my fav and has always given me what i wanted from it plus some.
I know some people don't like them because they have blown up on them, well iv had mine for 4 months now and its running strong which i thank is due to ditching the springs and brushes before the first run.
Man i have to many motors, i guess i better find something else to start spending my pay checks on......LOL :D

Grizzbob, What are you doing with the brushes on the MVP, if anything? Are you squaring them? How does the gearing compare to the P2K? Thanks.

No, I don't have an easy means to trim my brushes(I don't trust my hands quite that much, even with my Dremel), so I've just been trying them as is. I feel that I've gotten the best results from running Reedy 768's(that's their slotted 767), but when available, I prefer Niftech's Deep Serrated brush(no idea what compound they are), they seem to produce just a bit more power(but everything else is the same). Bad Racer, if you want to have your motor looked at, I'll be at Adams Creek Saturday & I'll have my Robitronics dyno with me. We can have a look & see how yours is doing..... :)

Grizzbob, You need to try using a file sometime...it's a piece of cake! Most lhs's carry individual ones for around a buck or so. It's a lot easier than using a dremmel.
I picked up a set of 6 or so for about $4 at Harbour Freight. Just practice on some old brushes 1st. Power tools are overkill sometimes. Later.

Gizzbob that would be awesome. I haven't made it to Adams Creek in a while....been to caught up in other things. My poor truck hasn't seen dirt in weeks. LOL
I might not be able to make it this Sat. due to it being my b-day and all but nothing is getting in my way when next Wed. I got to make it there to practice a bit.

Well no one answered Sassoon up there, but I have a MATRIX 7.5R and I am running faster than the P2Ks at my track and keeping right up there with GM3's. I replaced the original brushes which only lasted me about 14 runs. But its fun beating guys who dont have a clue what the heck kind of motor I have. So I would guess it beats the P2K in a few areas atleast.

Actually, if it has a copper colored can & endbell parts then it IS a P2K, just tuned & relabeled by Matrix(owned by Integy)..

Yeah, its the exact same can design as the P2K, but it comes with different brushes and I think a different armature. All I know is, mine is faster than the P2Ks at the track.
