I'm looking to shape my hull out of some type of foam. I plan on fiberglassing over the foam. Then hollowing out room for my radio box et al.

Can someone recommend a good foam to use. I'm looking for minimal structural support, just enough for the fiberglass to set up but I'll need to be as buoyant as passable.

Thanks.

You can use the Dow blue foam (http://www.dow.com/styrofoam/na/res-us/products/square_edge.htm), or the Owens Corning pink foam. Depending on where you live, getting the thicker pieces of foam insultation can be a problem. If you live in an area with lots of pleasure boats, you can look for the foam flotation billets for piers. The Dow foam is available in 2 fy x 8 ft or 4 ft x 8 ft pieces. Use epoxy finishing resin to lay up the fiberglass cloth; polyester resins tend to eat the foam.

...]Dow blue foam or the Owens Corning pink foam...

I was thinking about similar foams. I'm going to make this self-righting so I'm looking for something that's as buoyant as possible.

Foam can be found at your local home center in 4 x 8 sheets in a variety of thicknesses. Layer and cut to shape.

I used spray insulation foam layered around a wood skeleton for shaping. About $4.00 a can.
