To me, phillips head screws = cheap. Its like buying a BMW with hub caps! I often will pass on buying certain R/C's just because they come with Phillips head screws (Kyosho, HPI, etc..). Ill never forget how much of a pain it was to build my first R/C which was a RS4 MT. I just wish that ALL manufactures would include hex screws. They are far superior IMO. Does anyone else feel the same way? Or do I just have too much hate?

I wish I had 4 hands so I can give you a four thumbs up. I usually buy a quality screw kit before I build any kit.

Nope, I won't put up with them either. They are as close to worthless as it gets. Its 1st thing I do with any new rc, replace those awful phillips wood screw things that are called screws with high strength alloy steel hex heads. All my rcs (even 1/18ths) have hex heads.
I use a cordless driver and hex heads make maintenance and mods a breeze. Can't do that with phillips, they strip way too quickly. The other thing I've noted, phillips will vibrate loose much more often than a hex head. They only reason they are used is cost, they are CHEAP. They really degrade an otherwise nice rc.
I save my hate for slotted screws.

When I was building my Yokomo, i thought it wouldn't be a pain if i used the phillips. But after I stripped one, I stopped everything and ordered titanium hex screw kit right away. lol I mean, you can't go wrong with either one. I used phillips before, but its the black steel ones that mess you up. I had titanium phillips before and it worked wonders.

The key here is that the hex screws better be good ones or they will strip much easier than phillips head ones. I had an RS4-3 and never once stripped a phillips screw, but on my TC3 i couldn't help but strip numerous ones, even with quality hex drivers.

Funny you mention your TC3.... I stripped 2 screws on a associated motor

Even though ive got RCScrews hex kit on my buggy, i dont mind Philips head screws, as long as their not in high stress area, if its for plastic bulkheads, or suspension components i dont mind, but as soon as you get to the drivestrain and engine, hex heads are a must.

I for one really like phillips head screws, as long as i have a decent set of drivers on me. I also like hex heads, but hate the slotted screw heads.

It all comes down to screw quality, and tool quality.

How about a new thread about "People who buy cheap screwdrivers and then complain about the screws"? That would cover both the screw problems that were discussed as of late.

After building my Tamiya kit my palms had little sore spots from pushing down on the screwdriver. I've started switching to hex screws, now my fingers hurt from turning allen wrenches though.

Phillips/hex both the same if they are of good qaulity, Either will strip out if they are cheap just the same. You have to have good phillips/hex head drivers to. Now Flat heads are the the ones to gripe about.

^^^^^ - I use a Hudy phillips driver and the phillips things still honk.
After I converted to all hex heads, I bought a B&D driver that uses bits. The right sized hex bits are easy to find and this driver turns slow, like 200rpm (rechargeable lithium batt that lasts about 2 months on a charge) and eliminates me having to turn anything. It's a pistol grip type driver and when I get screw snug a simple twist of the driver lets me put the torque on the screw that I want.

I actually enjoy wrenching just because all my cars have hex screws! I think my hatred of phillips head screws stems from the aircraft that I work on. Try removing 1x1ft skin panel with 70+ phillips head screws! More than half of them strip because the panel probably hasent been removed in 20+ years! It gets to be a real pain!

That's an easy fix... don't use the Craftsman companion tool set because you will save so much money on them. Buy KD tools, Snap-On or something else that is quality construction, not just backed by a free replacement warranty. I quit doing the Crapsman stuff when it cost the extra amount in gas going to Sears that I saved by buying them. Remember kids, Kmart owns Sears and that means Martha Stewart now can use the same tools that you build with for cooking and keeping the house clean.

well, if they didnt suck as much, I wouldnt have made a thread on it. ;)
But since then, I've sort of made amends with hexes. I've stopped using ball ends, and I've striped out hexes aboout as often as I do phillips (read: rarely).
still dont like them too much though.

I was just thinking about this yesterday. On the RC18T, the few hex screws are like a treat lol. Anyone know of a full hex kit for the 18t?

it all comes down to tools in the end to be honest.
You see hex head machine screws are great if you have decent drivers which cost money and normally only useful for rc as they have limited leverage.
Now tamiya kits are normally for newbies and thus there not going to have hex drivers and trust me if you think Philips or posidrive screws are a pain try assembling a kit with bunch of hex keys.
Basically since using a correctly selected screwdriver i have never striped out any of the manufacturers screws.
The key is to make sure that the screwdriver makes contact at the sides before the tip bottoms out in the screw if this is the case the fit will feel very tight and secure in the screw.
Also funny thing i would like to moan about is that on both my xx and my xxxt losi use very small hex holes in big screws on the back plate which means that rounding off the hole is very easy if a screw is somewhat bent and you dont have a perfect fit as it seems everyone has a different interpretation of how big 1/16 is.

tool quilty gets my vote to i dont care as long as there not flat blade i hate them
One trouble with phillips is you need pressure and on RCs sometimes you have a pretty awkward thing to be able to to be able to apply enough pressure.
The trouble with Craftsman is they go with whatever company that bids the cheapest. So there is no consistency. One time they could get a good company that does a great run the next time it could be a crap company the ends up making junk.
