Ive just recived my new lrp v10 spec4 12t motor took it out of the package
put it in my truck ran it at half throttle (with ib 4200wc batts) i notice alot
of power but after 3min of drivin loss of power then the smoke came i turned it off looked at it no meltin from inside or out so itried it again same thing then my speed controller flopped on me so i took the motor out of the truck so i could straight wire the motor to my batt to see if the problem was motor or speed control as i figured it was the motor smoke and burnt wire
smell filled my room i took the arm out the can it looked like one side of the arm was a lil burnt. My question is wut went wrong? Did i do anything to cause this? Or could it been a bad motor i got? :(

what kind of speed control do you have?

...and what turns rating limit does it have?

what kind of truck? How was it geared?

If it was an RTR and you used stock gearing that would probably be the problem. A 12 turn requires a smaller pinion gear then what comes on most RTR motors. It sounds like it overheated after 3 minutes and fried.

The motor might be able to be salvaged. The ESC may have been too weak to handle the motor especially if it was overgeared, or the motor frying may have damaged it. If you don't know what to do you may want to take it to someone who does and see if they can help.

Sorry man :( .

Agree with Scoob. 12T motor does require a smaller pinion. On a truck 12T motor really an on-road vehicle.16-19T motor sounds alo better for a truck or monster truck. 12T with the stock pinion will overheat the motor. 12T motor only good for speed runs, not off-roading.

Its a traxxas rustler geared 28p 84t spur geared stock speed gear set up
accordin to traxxas my esc a duratrax 8t pro foward. its weird because
since ive had the truck i dumped all the electronics and started runnin 12ts
reedy, orion, trinity, venmon 12t motor no problems just strippin gears here and there. I had the truck for about a year now.OH yeah by the way im a tarheel to im from Win Salem NC been in NY for about 8mths now hate it here the weather sucks im on my way back next month.

my guess is over gearing combined with a badly run in motor...
although it could just be a factory defect in the motor

Oh my cow... a 12 t motor with a 28 Pinion???? =O OVER GEARED

lol i wouldnt go 28 pinion with a stock motor at my track :P

Thats how i gear all of my 12t motors and no smoke just a lil heat. So wut would be a good start for gearing without slowing it down? Take note i only drive it on hardtop pavement.

some people think that gearing a motor to high heaven will make it go faster, WRONG!

gearing a motor CORRECTLY will make it go faster in all directions...

i found when i lowered my gearing tooth by tooth from 26t to arround 21t my cars speed increased, accel increased and heat decreased allot!

For a 12 turn, depends on ur car...but i would say buy a range of gears lowest being a 14t

My set up now is 2.8 rims wrapped in 2.2 duratrax truck street tires in back
,up front 2.8 allstars with 2.8 rubber rpm a arms on the back, also rpm a arms
on the front to give it that wide feel and approach switched out the stock
camber links for ajustable ones, futuba high tourke steering servo man the
list goes on and on including lot of extra parts it looks realy great low to the
ground and handles like a dream also.I just want to put some speed behind
it.For the truck its the underdogg once i get it right itll be the top dogg.Thats
why this is called a hobby.I dont care wut people say about the rustler.I say
i made this thing into something hot.

No way in hell is an offroad truck remotely geared correctly with a 28 tooth pinion. You will burn up a motor that way, and if not you would be getting better runtime, performance, and life out of the motor if you would just gear it correctly. Im not sure what gearing should be used being i havent used brushed in a while but I do know that is way too big.

And i was just using the stock applications acorrdin to traxxas

stock for a stock motor (27 turn) remember for every turn you loose you gota lose a tooth of the pinion.

The stock TITAN 550 motors have allot of torque so they are geared the same as a 27 turn but a 12 turn spec will never take that sort of gearin.

if I read your post correctly you were using the "speed pinion". First off, that pinion is way too large for anything except short speed runs, and that is why there is another smaller pinion for normal driving. The electronics can barely handle the "speed pinion" with the torque of the titan 550, and anything 12t 540 size with the "speed pinion" will need at least 7 less teeth. I would suggest going 2 teeth smaller than the normal pinion that is stock for the rustler (the non-speed pinion) and try that. IMO, the speed pinion is not necessary, and should not be in the box. It is only in there so they can say the car goes over 30 mph or whatever they say. It overgears the motor, which causes heat and stress on the electronics.

In other words, you were severly overgeared :D

So using a 11t pinion is that to low?

yes. I would try something around 20t-18t.

Thanks alot man i shoulda read up on all of this before i burnt everything up.Good news theyre replacing my esc as for the motor they didnt have anymore so theyre
replacing it with a reedy kr so i guess thats a good thing but i was lookin foward to using that lrp spec10 12t motor with 41,000 rpm put out.Ive already got a kr but thats all good.Oh yeah by the way do you know who sells pinion grub screws? If so could u give me the site? thank you
