Is the Losi aluminum top shaft fot the XXX/XXXT all one piece, including the threaded portion? I hope it is, because I hate the screw-in threaded piece used for the slipper nut. I just hate the possibility of it coming loose. Should I buy this Losi aluminum one or should I buy a HG titanium shaft (which has built-in threads, but no built-in gear)? I'd rather get one with a gear already so I can do away with the roll-pin/C-clip setup, which is lame.

I'm getting a new one because I noticed that the shaft wobbled severely when I turned the wheels with slipper in place and the gear cover off. This is obviously bad. I don't know what the deal is, but it doesn't seem to wobble much at all with all slipper hardware off. Hmm, what's the deal?

You install the threaded portion in the Losi shaft.

When you tighten the slipper way down....the threaded portion will flex a little...that could be what you are seeing as a wobble...

With a nomal slipper setting, you should not see any problems....

the hg one, has the threaded thing, or at least i remeber it having it when i installed it.

however if you want to go faster, or anything, its the most cost ineffecent way to do it. buying new brushes or getting your comm cut would be soooo much more effective, or cleaning the dirt off your car.

Well the deal is that I'm not satisfied with the stock top shaft assembly. I'd much rather have a one-piece unit like I had in my RC10T. I dislike the roll-pin/C-clip gear setup the most, but screwing in the threaded portion annoys me, too. Nobody makes a one-piece top gear/shaft with threads, so I have to settle for half of my wishes. Losi makes the aluminum one, but you have to screw the threads in; HG makes a titanium shaft with built-in threads, but you still have to use the stock gear (and roll-pin and C-clip) with it. I decided to get the Losi Aluminum shaft/gear. Frankly, I just want to do all I can to prevent ANY problems with my truck. There's nothing worse than a DNF... Besides, these kinds of hop-ups give me much-loved peace of mind.

Oh yeah, Sir, you're totally right. It was wobbling when I had the slipper spring fully compressed to let me set up the diff. I took the slipper off and it doesn't wobble. That makes sense, but how lame is that? The shaft should have better integrity than that IMHO.

Well, my Losi Aluminum shaft can't hurt, can it?

It is not the shaft flexing, just the threaded portion. It is like a 3/4" setscrew. Setscrews are hardened steel. Hardened steel flexes...

BTW....I ran the steel shaft for a long time with no problems....Some of the guys run them preferably to Al, the car feels more stable and tractable with steel outdrives and top shaft....kind of a gyro effect....so they say....

Good luck....you have my email if you need any other Losi info...

hey, sir, did you ever find out why you can't use SIRSPEEDY? that is soo dumb, you did not do anything wrong, i think. Either way, i have replaced the top shaft(just got another stock steel) because it was wayyyyyy tweaked, and i do not know why, maybe i tapped a pipe or something(but you know that i do not do that http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ) but, i plan on getting the Al top shaft, along with many other things, but, i know that a DNF is the last thing you want, but really, the steel would probably be better to go with, stronger.

You guys would not believe the difference between the stock setup and my new aluminum one. The aluminum one must weigh less than half as much as all that steel! It's gonna make a difference, I'm sure of it. I'm glad I bought it. In the rare event that I have a problem with it, I still have my brand new steel shaft & gear to throw back in if I have to. I took the time to install my new shaft and inspect my tranny today, and I made sure everything was perfect. I am now more satisfied. Man, I have all the time in the world to do stuff like this as I wait for my brother to solder my ESC & batteries for me. I'm sure lucky, aren't I? Just kidding! I'm so ready to race my truck, I can't stand waiting any longer. I'm definitely going racing this Saturday!

No the losi aluminum top shafts don't require you to screw the threaded portion in. They are very durable too. I ran one in my NXT with a picco .12 and it held up very well.
