View Full Version : Positioning of Electronics...

Hi guys,
I was just curious whether the positioning of your electrics in a car can affect it, in ways such as glitching and a shorter range?

What electrical components have to be as far away from each other as possible for optimum performance?

...also, i was considering mounting my receiver and ESC on a 1mm thick sheet of aluminium screwed to my chassis, would this have any negative effects such as interference from the aluminium disrupting the receiver signal or anything?

I have just finished stripping my car down, and i am in the process of rebuilding it, so any help is much appreciated!

Thanks Guys!

your receiver should be far from the motor (although after about 2.5 inches it doesnt matter)...try to keep all current holding wires away from the receiver...other than that try to keep wires fairly short to increase run time. (lower resistance)

Gotcha...
My receiver is about 2cm away from my motor at the moment. D'oh!
If i was to mount it on a bit of aluminium sheet away from the motor, would this help, or would the aluminium just interfere with the signal too??

make sure the receiver wire does not make contact with the ally plate as that would cause interfiarance.
Other than that, should be ok

I might have to try that out then!
Thanks!

Just another question....
I was considering moving the position of my battery (which is mounted width ways) from the centre of my car to further back towards the rear of the car by a couple of inches.
(eg. '||' is the battery and '==' is the chassis: from ==||==...to ===||=)

Would this mod affect the handling of my car in anyway, as i was thinking that because most of the weight will be situated at the rear of the car, this may cause problems with the steering???

Thanks for any help!

yea you would have allot less steering and more rear end grip...on poewr you will have very little steering especially if its a buggy.

Yeah, its my TL01 Buggy i converted to 2WD. I wanna move the battery because I need the room to move my recevier as far away from the motor as possible, because at the minute i cant get it to go 30 feet without it glitching!

It sounds like a good option to me because all i do is bash anyway, so steering isnt too important, and i am also lacking rear grip aswell.
Thanks!

well i dont think it is because of distance, check your receiver wire for damage and make sure ur tranny is fully charged

No, it is definately to do with the positioning. I just finished dremeling the new holes, and the battery fits in perfectly....leaving plenty of room for my electronics! I just have to wait to get a new servo before i can take it out for a spin though! (Damn nylon gears!!)

Ok, bringing this thread back to life...
NOW i need help!

So, i got my hands on a new futaba servo and fitted it to my car, charged up my battery, and took my car out.

But... i cannot go more than about 30 feet without glitching, even though i have now positioned my electronics correctly...if i stay within about 30 feet thoug, everything seems to work fine.

I do not know what is causing this, whether it is my receiver, transmitter or crystals playing up. Can anyone point me in the direction of my problems?
Bear in mind, my radio set-up is about 5 years old...

Thanks for any help!

Jay

check to make sure the receiver wires are not damaged, that is sometimes a problem.

Capacitors (ceramic) reduce electrical "noise" coming from the motor which does reduce glitchin so make sure yours are installed and working.

if you can, test another set of Xtals just to make sure its not that.

Finally, crack open your receiver and clean it out, crap stuck inside it can actually cause glitching. :teacher:

OK, thanks for that.
I inspected the wire, but couldnt find anything wrong with it, although over the years i have shortened it (when i was younger and knew no better!)
I have a capacitor installed on my motor (i think?..its a little green chip...thing...attached to the endbell)
I opened up my receiver and blew any dust or anything out...
I just cant test the crystals...although i might be able to when i see my mate at the weekend...
...anything else???

its the receiver wire, i guarantee you that.

go to a model shop or anything and just ask them for some receier wire and replace it, that will fix your problem or at least reduce the symptoms.

You think?
Its weird though...my range with my radio has never been good, but only recently it seems as though it is getting worse...
I've been looking on eBay for a replacement receiver and found one. I would just replace my receiver wire, but i think its about time i had a new receiver altogether.

Thanks!

personally i would just get the wire, its about 10p to get (thats 20c o our american friends), just make sure you get the right length.

When your getting te new receiver make sure you get the right Band.

Jayboy

by band do you mean AM/FM or mHz??

My current receiver is 27mHz AM, so i guess i will need the same as that yeah?

yes indeed.

Your reciever should also be as far away from the ESC as possible as well...not just the wires and motor.

Jayboy

Im pretty sure i have positioned everything right now.
Is there any way to tell if your crystals are broke or anything, without testing them in another radio?...or would my crystals be alright?

InspGadgt

only ways I know of to test them is try them in another radio and to try another set in your radio...you do have capacitors on your motor right?

Jayboy
04-12-2007, 03:14 PM
by capacitor, you mean a little green chip thing on the endbell....then yeah...

Demon-TC3

trust me if the receiver wire is shortened, thats it!

Jayboy

Gotcha...
Just got to get some cash so i can order a new receiver then...
(bit short as i have just paid £330 for my first motorbike insurance!!!!)

Jayboy
04-13-2007, 02:33 PM
OK, i just ordered a new one from ebay...£14 inc postage...
I'll see how that works out then...

Yeah if the antenna wire got cut then that's definately the problem

You mentioned only one capacitor on the motor. Brushed motors need three capacitors. One from neg to pos leads. One from neg lead to the motor can, and one from pos lead to the can. Try this if you only have one. Also make sure your antenna wire is at least 18 inches. That is the length most radios are tuned to(except dsm).

Jayboy
04-13-2007, 04:43 PM
3 capacitors???
Can you please show me a picture??

18 inches....my one is 17 inches...
anyway, upon further inspection, it appears the coating surrounding the wire has a few splits in it, exposing the wires...

Got to this site and click on "racers corner" and click on the link for soldering motor capacitors.
