I HAVE A TRAXXAS RUSTLER. I JUST FINISHED BUILDING IT AND TOOK IT OUT FOR A TEST RUN. IT WENT FINE UNTIL THE MECHANICHAL SPEED CONTROL STOPPED WORKING. IT JUST MADE A BUZZING SOUND UNTIL I UNPLUGGED THE BATTERY. I TOOK IT OFF AND BLEW THE DUST OFF OF IT. THEN I TOOK IT BACK AND THE RADIO WAS ALL WACKED. IT WENT BACKWARDS UNTIL I PULLED THE TRIGGER ALL THE WAY BACK AND IT STOPPED. THEN I LET GO OF THE TRIGGER AND THE TRANSISTOR PACK STARTED SMOKING I IMMETETLY UNPLUGGED THE BATTERY AND IT STOPPED SMOKING. I NEED HELP BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON IT FOR 2 MONTHS AND THIS A BIG DISSAPOINTMENT.I NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO DO TO FIX IT FAST. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRICIATED. THANKS

Well, one i wouldnt recomend the MSC (mechanical speed control) I personally know how hard it is to afford a good ESC but its WELL worth it. Next i think it may be ur servo, try recentering it then hook up all the wires again. Hope i helped Cya

Take off the arm to the speed control from the servo. Turn on your transmitter, adjust the steering trim knob/lever to center, then re-attach the arm onto the servo. When you do this, make sure the speed control is in the neutral position. You may want to add some lube to the speed control, if you have some.

Don't worry, you don't need an electronic speed control (that will come later :) ). This is probably one of the trickiest parts about putting together a Rustler kit. Hang in there, you'll get it right! I should know, I've owned a Rustler myself and had the same problem!

Have you e-mail Traxxas. Their e-mail is support@traxxas.com
Get a E.S.C as well. If you want a cheap one that goes in reverse. Look at the LRP F1 and LRP Runner Plus.
