hi. sorry for the newb question, but i've recently built a Subaru 2004 WRX and painted the shell with the standard metallic blue (used the tamiya paint the manual recommended). It's still a little transparent so im wondering what would be the best color/paint some of you would of used as a backing?

You would back metallic blue with a bright white. You back almost everything with white normally unless you're trying to darken a color which would be backed in black. Sometimes people back metallic colors with metallic/silver but I personally don't prefer it. With the subaru you'll definitely get the most accurate color (more similar to the actual car) if you back in white.

Can't say it enough.....test it on a scrap piece with various backer colors to see what you are really gonna get. why guess? Spray one large scrap, mask off three sections, and shoot each one with a different backer color. Keep the scrap for future reference. Label all the colors used on the scrap.

Short pencil (or sharpie) better than long memory.

If you want the tamiya metalic affect use Faskolor Satin Chrome. IT will make your blue pop (brighter), but will also give it that metalic coat affect. I use this color for all my backings

Just wanted to add my 2 cents...

Hold the body, in it's current condition, up to the light to make sure there are no "light spots" in the blue... Then lay down a backing coat.

I used silver on a body I did a while back. After trimming and mounting it, I noticed a couple of light spots in the silver where you can see some of the white backing coat if you look at it close enough.

See the photo of the body by using this link: http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=225213

Having white show through the silver isn't as bad as white showing through your blue.

Hope you're able to learn from an amature's mistakes.

For metalics and pearls I prefer to use a silver backing.
