View Full Version : Charging 4.8V?
I need to supply power to a motor on a lathe, so I took 2 cells out of a 6 cell pack to get the necessary 4.8 volts. Can I safely put the pack on a trickle charger that is meant for 6 or 7 cells? If not, how do I charge the pack? Do I need to get a special power supply or a new charger?

My charger handles 4-cell just fine. Does yours? I fast charge them at 4-6 amps because they're just old 1400's so I can abuse them. The peak charger peaks them just fine.

It just depends on the charger. As far as I know, if it says 6-7 cells, then most likely it will NOT work on a 4 cell pack. I made the mistake of trying that many years ago, with a charger that was only meant for 6-7 cells(though I didn't know it at the time), & it fried both the pack & the charger. Exactly which charger do you have?

A trickle charger wiil have to be pulled off at proper voltage or it will overcharge battery. If it's a regular charger it will probably smoke! Been there, done that.

I can't control the charging current with either of my chargers (except trickle vs. fast charge). However, I can monitor the voltage on one of them. How many volts should the 4.8 volt pack be charged to? I know that a 7.2 volt pack ends up at over 8 volts.
I have a Piranha Peak Charger and a Dynamite Mega 2.
