Just a few questions on pinion gears. What is the best material for smoothness and quietness? Steel or aluminium, or is there something else?

Is there much difference between 64pitch and 48pitch for outright speed and efficiencey. Im not racing but still want the most speed possible for on road.

Thanks...

if it is geared lower you will have more acceleration

if geared higher you will have more top speed

As long as your gear mesh is set properly and you have good quality gears.. your gears should make VERY VERY little noise irrelevant of material. I personally use all steel gears and as long as I'm running a spur that isn't chewed up it's super quiet.

The main reason that people use 64p is just for smaller scale cars. Some people use 64p so they have even more tuning capabilities as one tooth difference in 64p is a lot smaller of a difference than a 1 tooth change in 48p. Neither will get you more speed.

What gets you speed is gear SIZE. Basically the larger the pinion the faster you will go. The reason for this is less for more tire revolutions. Of course the down-side is that you will lose acceleration and your motor can overheat. It will take some experimenting to find the right gearing for your setup.

I have used RRP's aluminum gears in the past. They're really light and quite, but they just didn't hold up for me.
