I recently changed the pinion gear and spur gear in my TF-4... the pinion is 50t and the spur gear is 105t... i ran the car and i was getting good top end speed... after a few runs around the street i decided to inspect the car... i noticed a burning smell emitting from the motor <i said to myself "cooool" > then i ran a couple more times, then it just stopped... i inspected it again and i noticed the motor wires unsolder themselves AND the motor was super super super heated... i was like "COOOL" anyways, i was just wondering if this ratio is to much... :D

Man, you are way overgear you might have fried your motor. Did your car come with a gear ratio chart? Start with what they recommend. I would start with maybe a 22 or lower pinion.

2.1 is your gearbox ratio, not your gear ratio. To get the gear ratiouse this formula: spur/pinion x 2.1= your gear ratio.

the original gears were 36t pinion & 120t spur... i wasnt satisfied with the speed... oh i forgot, i had a speed gem 2 13t platinum in it :D

Man, that is a HIGH ratio. You would need like a 10 speed tranny to use that ratio safely. The final ratio on most cars is around 4:1. 2:1 is insane. Were the wires and ESC hot too?
PS
I have a TA03f, what kind do you have?

I have the TA-03F Pro David Jun model... but it's totally hopped-up with all the aftermarket parts, i.e. all the aluminum parts from Cross and the chassis, Kose shock towers front and rear... i also have a TA-03RS TRF with the Kose shock towers... and another TA-03F all built from Eagle parts; the chassis which holds saddle pack batteries, and all the aluminum parts for it... and i mean every single part! and HGI Sebring aluminum rims & wheel lock nuts...

BTW... the wires werent hot nor was my esc... just the wires came off my motor :D

When the wires come unsoldered from your motor, it's a pretty good clue that you're way overgeared and the motor is insanely hot. BTW, solder melts at about 420 degrees. You could say it was just a tad hot.... :D

:D lol hey Steve... wow 420!?! then my motor must've been that hot too cause i was unable to touch that thing  ;) :D

i ran mine once when the wire came unslodered, and a week or two after that, half of the endbell melted off of the can. Needless to say it wasnt good, so i would suggest you scale it down just a bit. :)

I know about solder melting. when I was 9 I was soldering a circuit on a computer board to make a clapper out of this science kit I got for my birthday. I reached to grab my drink and grabbed the soldering iron instead, my whole hand was smoke for a few weeks. hurt like nothing I have ever been through. It sounds like your motor had to be HOT, I might try to tone down on the gears some. thats an insane ration ;-)

A 50 tooth PINION!? Good crap, son, you've done it now. Gear WAY down and don't be such a speed freak. You're motor is toasted for sure. Live and learn...

I have had enough burns on my hand (not just from soldering iron) to tell temp by touch, I can touch my engine ad say, hrmm...220 deg, then i check it and its normally not off by more than 20 deg, its pretty cool.

Well yeah i'm a speed freak but it was really cooooool :D i did the for one of my ta03r... i put a D3 12quad in it with a 38t pinion... and boy did she rip... i did enjoy a crash... i was racin it down my ally and crossed the street, then it lost control and i steered to the right and the car SMACKED the curb... the whole left side was totally screwed... my rims were warped and my universals were in a 90 degree angle... structural damage was also found through out the chassis... it took me a week to repair the damage... BUT IT WAS FUN LOL :p
