Duratrax makes an awesome line-up of ESc's that I've run for the past year with no complaints. I know novak is a really good ESC manufacture, but I prefer the Intellispeeds the most.
Take your pick!!

Let's see if I can remember them all: Airtronics, Duratrax, Integy, Orion, LRP/Quatum, Novak, Tekin, KO Propo, GM Racing, Robtronic, Traxxas, Yokomo, Futaba, Hobbico and Keyence. Some manufacturer only competition style escs, others have them rated according to motor turn limits, amp rating, on resistance and a few other features. The low cost escs have reverse and forward starting in the 65-80 dollar range while the high end competition esc go for 139 to 230 dollar range. Now with brushless systems being used more in both competition and recreational rc there are escs that can be used with brushed or brushless motors or can be set to use Nicad/NiMH or Lipos.
Bascially what you need to decide in what plans you have to use it for, and select the model or make base on what you want to spend and use it for. Even the budget priced forward/reverse can be used in club level racing, you just have to lock out the reverse function.

if your bashing i would get a speedo with reverse lockout, but if your going to race, I strongly recommend a GTX, the best speedo on the market IMO
