I just bought a Speed Gems 19 turn "Quartz" motor for my stampede, when i was breaking it in (under 3 volts, 2 Energizer D's) it smelled like a burning/cooking smell, could it be that a added to many Formula 2000 comm drops or is my timing off, i set it to 12 degrees?

You don't break in a Electric engine, thats for gas engines. If you have a msc check the resistor on it, it could be overheating and making that smell.

You should be able to crank that baby up to 30 degrees or so - 12 is definitely ok.
All new electric things can smell a bit funny at first use; with your motor the comm drops are probably helping that along. At 3 volts it's probably nothing. I'd only start to worry if the smell continued once I put it on a full 7.2V pack..... and if it does you'll probably find out what's causing it fairly quickly (and spectacularly).

Maddriver you do break in an electric motor to seat the brushes to the comm correctly to get maximum performance. R/C Eagle- I have stock motors that do the same thing. I also use comm drops. Most of the time it is just the comm drops burning a little. It shouldnt be two much of a worry. Also after you use comm drops shoot your motor with some motor spray or the next time you use you motor you might get an even worse smell from the drops dried up and burning. :) Hope this helps!

Usually one drop for break-in is more than enough, just put it on, and spin the comm by hand to cover the comm with it. Too much, and your comm will burn up.
