i have a p2k and love it. the p2k is for tight tracks and the gm3 is for more open tracks. so i would go w/the p2k because it has more tork. :D

Charles,
Tracks vary a lot and probably the best advice you can get is from the people who run on your track. Most Rc people I have met will gladly help someone out who is just starting. If I were you, I would ask some of the locals what they are running in stock.

Don't forget the Orion Chrome stock RS and Peak Spitfire (they're the same thing with different stickers). I had all my stock motors dynoed a while ago and my Chrome had more torque AND RPMs than my P2K. Now that I have an MVP, I need to have them dynoed again, though...

i was thinking about geting a mvp team edition would that be the same as the p2k pro?

For racing offroad, the GM3 would not be recommended as it doesn't have good torque.

I think either the MVP or P2K would be fine.

I run MVPs and have been very happy with them in my ftt3 on a relatively tight track. there are some tuning tricks that really help. check out rcvehicles.about.com

Agreed, MVP's are capable of matching P2K's for torque & power if tuned properly, but they may not seem so torquey out of the package. The ones I've tested(both Pro & non-pro) usually look more like the Rage type & GM3's, but after the right brushes & springs they can go toe to toe with P2K's & even put out a little more top end to boot..... :)

Well, I haven't tested very many Chrome/Spitfires, but the few that I have looked at made good power but fell short in top end, they just seemed to peter out at high rpm, while the MVP stays strong at all rpm ranges(once again, this is when it is set up properly, not neccessarily the way it is out of the package). If your local track is very tight then either should be fine, but if you have some long straights & sweepers then the MVP might be a better idea, I think its the more versatile motor out there right now..... :)
