OK, I have been seeking advice fixing up my RC10, and so far it has been super helpfull. I have eliminated all the glitching, and cleaned the **** out of the motor and car. Next the gear box, its not very smooth at all.

I can spin them fine and all, but little to no free spin exists. Meaning that I spin the tire and it comes to a stop as soon as my hand leaves the wheel. I have cleaned the exterior, and opened the gear box for a visual, and added grease and cleaned the outside gear/bearings well(that gear that the motor gear connects to).

So this quesition is mainly for Original (before stealth) RC10 transmission owners. I never remember the gears every spinning freely? Any advice or websites that can help me get a smooth gearbox? I would consider upgrading if something exists for the ole RC10.

Thanks alot...

You cleaned the what out of it ?

The wheels on this ride spin quite freely

:p :p :p :p :p :p :p

The center counter gears usually add the most rotating resistance. They have a tendency to get all wobly. Wobly ? Is that a word ? Heheh.
OK, also check for binding in the outdrive bearings (bushings ?). Those wear pretty darn fast as they take a lot of abuse and are all cantilevered out there, just wanting to get mangled.

Try removing the spline plate and spinning just one side or the other to see if is a single bad part.

Good luck !

Alright jeepinator,
Youve answered most of my questions, and I am very appreciative of that. I saw you pic in another post and was hoping you had an opinion on this one.
I have noticed that one side is rougher than the other. Its actually the side opposite the engine gear. I am really rough on my terminology, so I will research the online manual. But if you could clarify at all, that would help me more.

"binding in the outdrive bearings (bushings ?)."

Now is this the gray bar that connects the wheel to the gear box. Your saying theirs a bushing where this bar connects to the gear box, on the outside. I do have tons of gunk in that area.

Thanks again.
I had my first successful drive tonight. She was haulin, and 200 times better than my first out of tha attic run.

This is an outdrive:
http://www.theshreves.com/pics/rc10outdrive.jpg

It is supported by a bearing (or a bushing) way inside the tranny. There is a lot of leverage put on this bearing, so they went bad pretty fast.

If you have bushings, be sure to oil them with light "sewing machine" oil, or equivalent.
Also, the differential set up is very weird. There is actually a shaft within a shaft. Be sure there is oil in there as well.
If you take the tranny apart you can find the source of the binding pretty quick.
The ceneter gear (idler gear) is made out of delron and it wears fairly quickly. Be sure the dust that has come off is not all caught up in something.
Also, I forgot about the bearing in the axle cariers (the bearing that support the rear axles). These get dirty real fast, even in todays RC cars. Check those definately !

Godd Luck

**** , you spoil me, with the pics and all. I plan on getting a manual as mine is long gone, and will go after this idler gear. I should be in good shape by then. Next is the fun part, street tires to race my neighbor.

Once again,
you da man

I remember a mod a way back that removed one of the internal bearings (there are two on the outdrives, the parts that connect to the dogbone). A large bearing was added to the outside of the tranny around the outdrive, the center bearing was removed, and the inside one was left. It helped smooth things out. Also, make sure the gears are completely flat on the spline plate (that internal metal plate) and try resetting the gears on it, sometimes they bind when they are put on, and sometimes they don't.

b3 boy. HPI makes the ss off road chrome wheels that fits the old rc10. The size is 2.0 inches so you need 2.0 inch tires such as pro-line road hawgs(2.0") for front and rear. The HPI rear wheels have a hole big enough for the larger axle on the old rc10 3/8" vs 1/4" (I think). I have these rims on my "original"(not anymore) rc10 and run it on the street exclusively, with a cool body such as 58 vette, 64 impala, 66 cobra, 68 camaro, etc.

I took that pic with my Nikon Coolpix 990 digital camera. The lighting was a bit off, but it worked out OK.

Hey Jeepinator! Do the front wheels on your RC10 have a little spacer that the flanged bearing goes into, then that spacer fits into the wheel? Of do I just have a "unique" buggy? Mine is all red. Scratch that, I just looked at your pics and I see that they don't have the little spacer there. My buggy has beadlock front wheels with at least 10 differet screws holding the rim together.

B3 Boy,
No, I have no plans of selling it. I doubt I eve will. The only exception being if it suddenly became worth $3k or something silly.
Thanks for the comliments, but it is sweetest, no sweetisd
The kit does no have bearings, but I have seen the AE bearing kits on Ebay for this kit. One of these times I will snag them ...
