I'm using a rattle can metallic paint along with black on a body. Should I back it with black or silver? Then I think I will back all of it with white.

Thanks!

The first backing you use should be your "tweak" backing.. meaning.. if you want to tweak it a bit brighter/more color you should back it with white. That will make the color "pop" more. If you want the color to be a little dimmer and darker you can back it with black. Generally I always back using white and the only time I ever use black is when I'm actually painting a black object on the body or if I want to intentionally tweak a color a bit darker. Also of course the less coats of color you put on the more effect your backing color will have.. so if you want a really dark orange you can do a light coat or two of orange and back it with black. Or you can just mix the color to be dark to begin with if you're able to mix your paints. I wouldn't back with silver. I say back with white always and you'll have good color. :)

Hmm..
The majority of the MT body is black with the bottom Metallic red or more of a metallic maroon.
I'm afraid if I back with white it'll be more of a contrast. Can't mix my colors since they're out of a can.

So don't back with silver?

makes sense.. You could try silver.. It would probably work as a sort of medium adjustment.. I've tried silver before but I usually want to tone teh color up or down rather than leave it original.. I guess I can't say to not use silver. I'm not sure.. :(

Silver is a good backer for metallic colors. But like Jeff said, if you want to keep your colors bright, back with white. I really don't like to back any colors with black, because to me it seems to make the color look "muddy".

What he said! I'll keep in mind the silver thing. I might try it on my next body.

I guess my thought is that the flake in silver would just help the metallic red sparkle a little more since it's kinda translucent.
3 coats black, 3 coats metallic, 1 heavy coat silver and now I'll do a couple coats of white.

Just remember, that if the main color is even a little transparent, it is going to take on the color/properties of the color you back it with. Back it with a bright color, the main color will be bright, metallic (such as silver) you may pick up some of the metal flake, dark paint will darken the main color.

Try out your paint idea on the trimmed off flashing around the body before you paint the real thing. It's free and you already have it.

Some translucents look good backed with black. I use black behind Faskolor faslucent blue with good results. You just have to experiment and find what you like and keep records of the results for future reference.
