When I had one, I think it was 10T, but I'd be a little conservative and stay about 12 personally.

I would go no LOWER than a 12T, i have fried mine 3 times, once with a 17x1, and 2 times wiht a 14x4, NO, my car was not overgeared, or the drivetrain binding, it just poofed

My owners manual says 12 turn, and I run mine with 13 turns and have no problem.
It's all in whether you gear the vehicle correctly.
Heck overgear a stock motor and even a Cyclone will shut down.

I just ran my Rebel for the first time last week in my HPI MT. I'm running a 14T double speed gem and after 2 battery pack's worth of run time, the power just cut to a crawl. I'd let it sit and then it'd be fine for a couple seconds, then it would slow down again.
The instructions say 16 turns is the lowest you should go w/ a Rebel. I bought mine after reading it could handle down to a 12 or 11 according to Tower Hobbies. I thought running the 14d would be conservative.
I was also running a 28 pinion at the time because that's what the HPI manual recommended for the motor. I've since switched back to the stock 22 tooth but haven't had a chance to test it to see if that fixes the problem. The other culprit could be lack of air flow due to the inner body cover. But it could just be the fact that a 14turn mod motor is too much for it.

The guy at Hobbytown USA said you can go as low as 9 turns but I really doubt it. I run mostly my 16 turn motor and it works fine, but if your going to upgrade to a low turn motor I wouldn't use the rebel, if possible.
