Heheh,
I did this once. I simply bent up those tabs under each comm segment and unwound the wire entirely. I then doubled up the wire and rewound it 13 times around each thingy.
You have to scrape the coating off of the wire where you reconnect it under the comm.
I even soldered mine for that fine handwound look  :p
Anyway, the motor was HEINOUS. It ran pretty fast for a while though. The solder apearently was the wrong type as it melted off and was splattered all over the inside of my motor !
Plus, it vibrated REALLY bad. I mean really bad. Like scary bad. I ended up redoing it as I did not get the wire on nearly tight enough. You need to wind it really freakin' tight.

All in all it was a great lesson on motors. I suggest you try the same ...

EDIT: I think I ended up with 12 turns actually. My winding technique was not very efficient. Try for 13, but if you run out of wire, unwind and do 12.

Hey Jeep, thanks for the tip. I was thinking more like a 2t-double??????

Jeep....back when dirt was invented and slot cars were in their prime we used to rewind motors all the time. I work in the telecom industry and had access to all kinds and sizes wire and solder. Used to wind them down to 8 or 9 turns and solder them with silver solder and then epoxy them and bake em and balance em.. They would outrun anyone in our club. And they lasted pretty well too. I think I'll resurect your idea and give it a shot. :D :D

bluesy my dad use to run slot cars way back (25 years ago) He did crazy custom stuff like that. He said these things were soo fast you could barely see it. I use to run little tyco cars till my track broke and I could get it up to 25 miles and hour in a tenth of a second. It was insane. I could around 20 feet per second.

What do you mean when u said "I then doubled up the wire ..."???? I have a stocker with a good comm. I want to do that! I have taken all the copper wire off before.

OK, then take all the wire (after it is off) and "fold" it in half.
Make the wire be 1/2 as long my making it be 2 strands.
Hmmm... can anyone help here ?
I am not sure how to word it ...

This is sort of like this, but if you unwind the wire on a stock motor and rewind it with 27 turns, is it still a stock motor?

I wonder what what happen if you simply put a blob of copper on each theing, and made sure it connected good the the comm. The motor would be like a 1 blob, 3 wind. :)

Crazy Canuck, yes, but it will probably not be nearly as good or fast.

A 2 turn motor !? Something tells me that would not even rotate. Besides, the fewer the turns, the greater the wire diameter (or to compensate, the more strands there will be).

Jeep, I've heard of people rewinding arms, but they also said that you can't solder the wire back on to the comm tabs otherwise exactly what happend to you will happen. That's probably why they don't solder the wire to the comm in the first place. Admittedly it would be hard to re-crimp it properly.
I've always thought it would be ok to rewind an arm, but never tried (you should try guitar pickups, now THAT's hard). But what would be really good if you could replace the comm after it's been cut down.

I bought a used soldering station that has adjustable heat at the tip. I have silver soldered jewellry with it. That usually takes a mini torch to complete properly. When I soldered the slotcar motors they never came undone. The biggest problem I had was the super fine balancing that has to be done. When I get home from my current road trip I'm going to try it out with an RC motor. Hope it works..

FilthyPierre,
Every hand wound arm I have seen has been soldered. Only the cheaper machine wound mods are crimped only.
They just use a much higher temp solder, like bluesy mentioned.

Well there you go. I've never owned a hand-wound arm, although I have a D4 and I thought they had hand-wound arms. It was certainly expensive enough. Musta been misinformed.... sigh.....

Anybody tried doing this to a mod motor? An eight turn mod that has been african engineered into a 4 turn...
