View Full Version : 540 motor in a XXX ?

In 2 weeks or so the club I race at is hosting a round of the state titles, and our dragon-lady president says we all have to enter. Only trouble is the archaic rules of the governing body don't allow rebuildable stock motors (can you believe it?). The classes are: 540 (sealed can, grey Johnson motor), Group 20 (20x1 motors only) or modified. Usually I race rebuildable stock so I figured I would race a 540 for this meet - until I found that a Johnson 540 won't fit in a XXX !!!! That's right, the bushing housing on the front of the can is too bloody big to fit through the slot in the XXX's motor plate.
So looks like I'm SOL. Unless one of you knows of a 540-style motor that would fit, or an aftermarket motor plate ?. I'm not prepared to drill out the standard plate just for this one meet.
Anybody got any suggestions (apart from race G20 or mod - I've already thought of that) :)

Maybe some spacers and extra long motor screws? You motor will be way away from the motor plate but...

Piere, Will they allow you to put 2 small flats on the bushings?
Hows the lathe doing. Good I hope. :)

Railman, I doubt it - they're pretty strict with the 540 class. We're having a working bee at the track this coming weekend to prep for the big one, so I'll ask the prez lady and see what options I have there, but suffice to say I think I'll be outta luck. But thanks for the suggestion.

As for the lathe, I used it for the first time over Easter, it seems to have worked well but there's fine rifling marks on the 3 comms I cut with it - maybe an artifact of the carbide bit. I've never noticed it with a diamond-tipped bit (on the comms that others have cut for me). But then again I've never used a lathe before so it could have something to do with my technique.

you said that they don't allow rebuildable stock motors, are you sure you cant use a Trinity midnight or old green machine. They are sealed motors.

Pierre, which club do you race at? Our club runs those 540's all the time and everyone has to grind out there motor plates to fit the bigger can. There problem caused with this as I've had to do it with my XXX and my XX CR KE. It wont weaken it as I have put G20's and many other motors that havent moved at all. No 540s will fit in a standard motors plate. But now my club runs modified-540's which are 540 armatures in modified cans. They go REALLY well, (last meeting, I 3 times beat the G20 times with 1 of these motors).

Aussie_Man, my club is Sydney Off Road Racing Club, situated at Ryde. It's not the club rules - a few of our members race 540's but they all have B3's - I don't even know if they have to modify their motor plates to fit the 540's in. The rules are ROORDA rules, which is the NSW governing body - our club president is the secretary of ROORDA (incestuous business this).
But all of the Losi drivers at the club run either rebuildable stocks, G20 or Mods.
Anyway, I think it's a moot point. I don't want to hack my motor plate, but if I can get a replacement in time I might have a go, otherwise I'll be racing G20.
