batterys have a voltage of 1.2 per cell correct? why when i take em off the charger and messure voltage does it say something like 8.5

Primus, In battery packs the cells are in series, in which case you add up the individual voltages of the cells. The cells actually peak at a higher voltage than 1.2v, but they are rated by their average voltage durring discharge. So a 6 cell pack might charge to say 8 1/2 volts, & then discharge down to 5.4 volts. The avg would be (8.5+5.4)/2/6=1.158 volts witch would round to 1.2 volts. Alkaline batteries are rated at 1.5v, but are more like 1.6v when new. Make sense? :) ;)
