View Full Version : How do I get more watts out of my setup?

I am currently benchtesting a new plane to check power output.
Specs as follows:

Battery: Lipo 11.1 v 4200 mAh 15C
Motor: Eflite Power 32 rated for up to 700 watts.
Prop: APC 12x8 E.
Aircraft all up weight: 5.0lbs
ESC: Venom Air Corp 60 amp.

Using the above setup and putting my whatt meter in line I get the following readout at full throttle:

Amps: 30.3
Watts: 320
Batt. V: 10.57
Since I was targeting about 100 wats per pound for the performance I want the 320 watt is not even close and comes out to just 64 watts per pound.
Barely enough to make a good trainer and sure not enough to get you out of trouble.

Question is: How do I get more watts since the motor is rated at 700W max??
1. Go to larger prop such as 13x6 or even a 13x8 or larger?

2. Go to a 4S lipo at 14.8V??

3. Other options?

As always, any reply from the more experienced flyers is always appreciated.

Thanks,
Ken

Depending on what kind of flying you plan to do you could go to a biger and/or a deeper prop. You don't mention the palne or the type of flying you plan to do.

A larger prop of the same pitch will give you more thrust, more pulling power. Good for towing or for strong verticle climb. A larger prop will pull more power = more watts.

A deeper prop, going from a 6 pitch to an 8 will give you more speed. This will also pull more power = more watts.

Depending on your grond clearence of the landing gear, you might go to a 13 or 14 inch prop or a 9 or 10 pitch, or both.

Usually motor makers provide some guidance as to what size props the motor should use. That should provide some guidance.
