This was my first ever truck, and i got it when I was like 11 or so. It has an aftermarket motor and esc in it. I quit playing with it when I was a kid a few years after I got it becuase I kept stripping the gears out. I have recently ordered new gears and want to know what to do to keep it running without frying them again. I went through 3 sets back then..

okay....which gears were you tearing up?
the s-10 was based on the TA-02 chassis...which ran a weird two transmission/differential set up with a shaft connecting the two. Are you tearing up spur gears? trans gears? diffs? i ran mine with a 16x3, and they held fine,..so, something must be amiss. Lets see if we cant find out what and why.

I'm tearing out the spur gear that is that weird spur/drive gear. I'm gonna go take the car apart so I can tell you which motor I have and what speed control that may help out. Thanks!

okay....
remember this. Tamiya uses whats called .6 modular gearing or, a.k.a, 48 metric pitch.. your standard 48 pitch pinion will destroy a spur gear!
also, the Ta-02 uses a pre-set gear mesh for motor mounting, so unless you have altered this, i doubt your mesh is wrong. Sounds to me like you could have non-compliant gearing.

alright, the motor is a trinity xstar, the purple one with the explicit sticker on it from a while back, and the esc is a tekin rebel. I have altered nothing in the truck, just a different motor and speed control, with a few other upgrades such as bearings etc. but nothing that would alter the gearing.

are you using the kit supplied pinion?

after looking, it seems that the gear on the motor (the pinion?) is the one that came with the truck as well, becuase I'm pretty sure we took it off the stock motor to put it on this one, and I keep ordering the factory gears. (excuse my lack of knowledge of gears etc., it's been a while!)

okay....
what is it doing to the spur? is it taking ALL the teeth off, or just in a certain spot, such as isolated to 4-6 teeth?
and, dont stress the knowledge thing, we all start or even start over at some point. As long as you and i both understand what each other means, we will be fine.

they are all a little ground, but only 6-7 teeth are ground nearly flat. I am suspecting the others could be because of my younger thinking it would somehow work to grind them down.

ahhhhhhhhh.
okay, the shaft that spur runs on...is it on bearings? or bushings? The instant torque of a "hotter" motor can cause flexing, or distort the gear mesh if you have some bushing wear,...causing the motor to "skip" on the teeth, as it pulls away from the spur.
if you are on bearings, then we need to address a different area.

the truck is on bearings throughout. Man, I appreciate all this help! I am kinda hoping to get this thing running, then restore it to look new again.
I just want to clarify, the spur is the larger gear, right? Like I said, I have been out of this all together for about 8 years and am just now trying to get back into it because I live near tracks again..

i had the S-10...boy i miss it too. fun truck. Yes, the spur is the larger one. let me do some digging here, we need to find out whats happening. any chance of pics??
icanthinkofone

oh yeah, what do you need pics of? the gear of course, anything else?

alright, i got pics on my camera but of course can't find the cord to upload them...

hahahaha, how it usually goes. I know i am thinking hopefull here, but, do you have another spur/pinion gear there? spares?
icanthinkofone
01-17-2007, 11:43 PM
nope, i just ordered a full set of gears (all i could find) from tower hobbies that should be here in the morning. That's why I'm trying to figure out what my problem is because I don't want to put them in and end up with the same problem again. I pretty much have all gears except the spur/drive combo gear (not sure if you remember, but the spur and drive gear are one piece...)

yes, i do remember. As long as your pinion and spur are both metric pitch, and all the bearings are good, and the gear mesh numbers are lined up, you should be good. Feel free to e mail me pics if you have any doubts.

I will check that when my new gears get here. What are the mesh numbers? When they get here I will probably send you pics when I assemble it. THanks again for the help!

anytime man...thats why we are here!!
mesh numbers i refer to are on the platic motor adapter...its numbered liek a dial for the pinion you have,...19t pinion goes in the 19 hole, ect...

hmm..I'm gonna have to definately make sure of that, I probably just dropped the gears in there and didn't look for anything like that!

Alright, so I got a new spur gear in this beast and it's still not doing right. It ran good for a minute or two and it already is starting to make a few sounds. how can I tell if my spur gear and my gear on the motor (sorry, dont' know what it's called) are compatible?

I have a Tamiya S 10 also, if the pinion (motor gear) is not compatible, I don't think it would run good for a minute. I'm thinking the pinion is not set in the right place on the motor shaft. The pinion may only be contacting the spur half way or less. That would make it fail prematurely. It's hard to see where it's going to be on the S 10, but pull the motor and try to see where it's meeting the spur. I always set the pinion just short of the two post that run up by the pinion for mounting it to the truck. Did you get a new pinion gear too? It may be worn out.

any chance you got the part nubmer handy???? i still think it sounds like standard 48 pitch meshing ( or lack of) against metric.

Here is a link to the new gear set. I don't know the part number for the pinion gear, i may just need to get a new one just to see.
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0095P?FVSEARCH=LXGK13&FVPROFIL=++&search3=Go
Part number is LXGK13 if that link doesn't work.
Any suggestions on what pinion gear I should get?

yup,...if you are running the stock motor, go with about the same, drop a couple teeth if you run a mod. Make sure you are running a metric pinion too...its been many a year since i had my s-10, but it seems like it had a 21.

Stock Pinion for the S 10 is a 17. Tamiya part # 50354
It comes with a 17 and a 16, use the 17 for stock motors and 16 for mod.

thanks ad...
my TB-01 had the 21~ lol.
icanthinkofone,....if mesh is good, pitch is correct, gears are new,...then something is allowign the motor or spur to "shift" under throttle. all i can think of anymore.

A new pinion should do it, it's probably old, or the wrong mesh. Use Tamiya parts and I'm sure it will be good to go.
I hope you get it working soon. I just picked up some TLT-1 wheels and tires for mine and am having a lot of fun in the snow!

Yeah, it's got the wide ride. Picked it up on ebay about 3 years ago for 180.00 like new with Radio, wide ride, Super Rooster, mod motor, BB's and aluminum shocks. I like it a lot, it's fast and 4x4!

I had the F-150 version, and it really sounds to me like the motor is attached to the wrong holes in the mounting plate. Like running a 19 tooth pinion with the motor mounted in the holes for a 20 tooth pinion.
If you happen to still have the manual, take a look and see what it says for pinions on page 5. Make sure you have the motor mounted to the mounting plate correctly for the size pinion you are running. If you don't have the manual, go to http://www.tamiyaclub.com/manuals.asp and look it up! That's how I found out what page to look on. :p
