took to properly maintain...I never considered cutting the comm, replacing the brushes (until the old ones were about half way down), breaking it in, cleaning it after runs (usually do it when it started making crazy noises), lube it before it started making noises...

Yeah no kidding !
When I was new, I thought motors lasted forever. A few years ago I found a really old Trinity "Monster Horespower" something. Black label, silver letters. Anyway, I busted it open by hitting the shaft on the concrete floor. I almost fell over when I saw the comm. It had a dish shape about 1/4 inch deep !
I ran that thing to death it appears.
I turned it on my lathe just to see how bad it was. Well, I eventually gave up and just concluded, "really freaking bad" ;)
10 cuts on one motor was just too much for any man to handle alone.
